Module 1: How Classical Archaeology Works

What the discipline is, how it grew out of collecting and the Grand Tour and what that inheritance still costs it, and then the practical business of dating and reading a single object, with forgery as the test of the whole apparatus.

What Classical Archaeology Is, and How It Grew Up

  • Explain why archaeological context carries more information than an object alone, using the Antikythera wreck and the Euphronios krater.
  • Describe how classical archaeology developed from antiquarianism and collecting, and identify the assumptions that history left behind.

In 1900 a crew of sponge divers from the island of Symi, sheltering from a storm off the small island of Antikythera between Crete and the Peloponnese, found a wreck about forty five metres down. Over the following year they and the Greek authorities brought up bronze and marble statues, glass, pottery, and a bronze youth now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Among the material was a lump of corroded bronze and wood that nobody could make sense of, and it sat in the museum until a curator noticed a gear wheel in it in 1902.

That lump is the Antikythera mechanism, a geared device that modelled the motions of the sun, moon, and probably the planets, and predicted eclipses. It is now dated to the second or first century BCE. On its own, in a display case, it would be a marvel with no explanation. What makes it interpretable is the wreck. The ship was carrying luxury goods, including old and valuable Greek sculpture, most likely westward toward Italian buyers in the first century BCE, which is precisely the period when Roman elites were acquiring Greek art on a large scale. The mechanism was cargo in that trade. The findspot supplies the date range, the direction of movement, the economic context, and the company the object kept.

That relationship, between an object and everything recorded about where it was found, is the foundation of this entire course.

Key idea: An object carries some information; an object with its recorded context carries far more, and the context is the part that cannot be recovered once it is lost.

What kind of discipline this is

Classical archaeology is the study of the material remains of the Greek and Roman worlds, from the Aegean Bronze Age to late antiquity. It sits awkwardly between three fields and has always drawn from all of them: archaeology, which supplies excavation and analysis; art history, which supplies the study of style and iconography; and classical philology, which supplies the ancient texts.

That third element makes it a text-aided archaeology, and the advantage is enormous. Pausanias walked around Greece in the second century CE and described monuments building by building. Vitruvius wrote a treatise on architecture in the first century BCE. Pliny the Elder catalogued artists and materials. Inscriptions name magistrates, record accounts, and date buildings. A prehistorian excavating a Neolithic site would give a great deal for a fraction of that.

The advantage carries a matching risk, which specialists sometimes call the tyranny of the text. Because the literature is there, it is tempting to make the archaeology confirm it: to identify every burnt layer with a war a historian mentions, or to name a building after the only structure a source places in the area. The disciplined position is that material evidence is independent evidence, that it should be analysed on its own terms first, and that where it disagrees with a text one has to ask which is more likely to be wrong. HIST 210 covers the political narrative of the ancient Mediterranean in detail, and this course deliberately does not retell it; the point here is what the objects say when they are allowed to speak first.

Why this matters: Having texts makes classical archaeology richer than prehistory and more prone to a specific error, which is treating the archaeology as illustration for a story already written.

Where the discipline came from

Classical archaeology did not begin as a science. It began as collecting, and understanding that lineage explains a good deal about what it looks for and what it long overlooked.

In 1738 the Bourbon king of Naples began tunnelling into the buried theatre of Herculaneum in search of statues, and in 1748 work began at Pompeii. These were not excavations in any modern sense. Tunnels were driven through the deposit, desirable objects were removed, and the rest was destroyed or backfilled. Wealthy northern Europeans on the Grand Tour bought antiquities in Rome and Naples and shipped them home, and dealers supplied them, restoring broken pieces freely with new arms and heads to make them saleable.

Out of that world came the first attempt to organise ancient art intellectually. Johann Joachim Winckelmann published his History of the Art of Antiquity in 1764, and it is usually called the first work of art history. He arranged Greek art into developmental phases, argued that style changed systematically and could therefore be dated, and made the Greek nude the standard against which everything else was measured. Two facts about him matter. He never visited Greece, so he built his account of Greek art largely from Roman copies. And he described the marble he saw as white, praising its purity, at a time when traces of paint on ancient sculpture were already being noticed and, in some cases, cleaned away. That aesthetic became so entrenched that the recovery of ancient polychromy, treated in Lesson 5, still surprises museum visitors.

Professionalisation came in the nineteenth century, driven partly by embarrassment. The German Archaeological Institute was founded in Rome in 1829, the French School at Athens in 1846, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1881, and the British School at Athens in 1886. Method improved sharply when the architect Wilhelm Dorpfeld joined Heinrich Schliemann at Troy in the 1880s and imposed systematic recording of layers, which Lesson 3 takes up. The twentieth century added scientific dating, regional survey, and, more recently, a decisive shift of interest away from temples and toward houses, workshops, rubbish, farms, and the people who did not commission monuments.

The point: The discipline's origins in collecting shaped what got dug, what got kept, and what got thrown away, and the modern field spends a good deal of effort correcting for that inheritance.

What looting actually destroys

Now the practical consequence of the opening principle, because it is the ethical spine of the whole subject and it will return in Lesson 15.

In 1971 a red-figure calyx krater signed by the painter Euphronios was dug illegally out of an Etruscan tomb at Cerveteri, north of Rome. In 1972 the Metropolitan Museum of Art bought it for a sum reported at about one million dollars, then a record. In 2008, after Italian investigators assembled the evidence, the Met returned it to Italy.

Consider what was lost and what was not. The vase itself survived: it is magnificent, it is signed, and it can be studied. What did not survive is the tomb. We do not know what else was buried with it, how the assemblage was arranged, whose grave it was, when the burial was made relative to the vase's manufacture, or how an Athenian vase of that quality came to be in that particular Etruscan community. Every one of those questions is answerable by excavation and unanswerable afterwards. The object was preserved and the evidence was destroyed, and no amount of money or subsequent care reverses it.

That is the argument in its clearest form. Looting is not primarily theft of objects. It is the destruction of information, and it is the reason professional bodies forbid archaeologists from authenticating or valuing undocumented antiquities, since expert attention raises prices and funds the next hole in the ground.

Remember: A looted object arrives intact and stripped of everything that made it evidence, which is why the damage cannot be undone by later recovery.

What survives, and the shape of the hole

The classical material record is not a random sample of the classical world. It is heavily filtered, and knowing the filters is a large part of reading it correctly.

The bronze line has the largest consequences. Greek monumental sculpture of the classical period was overwhelmingly cast in bronze, and bronze is worth melting. The result is that almost every large Greek bronze we possess came out of the sea, where nobody could reach it to recycle: the two warriors found off Riace Marina in Calabria in 1972, the striding god recovered off Cape Artemision in the 1920s, the youth from the Antikythera wreck. Everything else is known through Roman marble copies, made centuries later, at different scales, in a different material, with supporting struts and tree trunks added because marble cannot hold a pose that bronze can.

So when you look at a famous Greek statue in a museum, you are usually looking at a Roman marble version of a lost Greek bronze, uncoloured, without its original setting, and often restored in the eighteenth century with parts the sculptor never made. Lesson 5 works through the consequences in detail. Meanwhile the loss of wood, textile, and paint removes most of the colour, most of the furniture, and most of the clothing from the ancient world, which is why reconstructions in white stone feel austere in a way the originals were not.

Add one more filter: what was excavated. Nineteenth century archaeologists dug sanctuaries, tombs, and public buildings, because that is where the art was. Houses, workshops, and farms were dug much later and much less. The record therefore over-represents the rich, the religious, and the monumental, and Module 6 is devoted to what it takes to see anyone else.

The upshot: The surviving material is filtered by what decays, what was recyclable, and what earlier archaeologists thought worth digging, and every one of those filters biases toward the elite and the monumental.

How the work is done now

Excavation is still central, but it is no longer the default. It is destructive and slow, and much can now be learned without it. Regional survey walks fields collecting surface pottery to map settlement across a landscape over centuries. Geophysical prospection, including magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar, images buried walls and streets before a trowel is lifted, which is how the plan of whole Roman towns such as Falerii Novi has been recovered without excavation. Underwater archaeology, which barely existed before the middle of the twentieth century, is now a major source, precisely because wrecks are sealed deposits full of the organic and metal material that land sites lose.

Analysis has changed even more. Chemical characterisation of clay identifies where a pot was made, turning a scatter of sherds into a trade map. Residue analysis identifies what a vessel held. Isotopic analysis of teeth indicates where a person grew up, which has upended assumptions about how mobile ancient populations were. And most excavation in Greece and Italy today is rescue work ahead of construction: the Athens and Thessaloniki metro projects and the constant building in Rome have produced enormous quantities of ordinary urban archaeology that no research project would have designed.

Bottom line: Modern classical archaeology increasingly reads landscapes, materials, and bodies rather than only monuments, and the least glamorous evidence has proved the most informative about how most people lived.

Common misconceptions

  • Archaeology is about finding valuable objects. The value of an object to archaeology is the information its context supports. A plain sherd in a sealed floor can date a building; a masterpiece with no findspot cannot date anything.
  • Ancient statues were white. Greek and Roman sculpture and architecture were painted. The white aesthetic comes from centuries of paint loss, reinforced by Winckelmann's praise for the marble he saw and by later cleaning.
  • The famous Greek statues in museums are Greek originals. Most are Roman marble copies of lost bronzes, which is why they carry struts and tree-trunk supports that a bronze would not need.
  • Because we have ancient authors, the archaeology just confirms them. Material evidence is independent, and it regularly contradicts or complicates the texts, which is the most useful thing it does.
  • Excavation is the main method. Survey, geophysics, and materials analysis now answer many questions without digging, and excavation is understood as a destructive act of last resort.

What to carry forward

  • The Antikythera mechanism is interpretable because its wreck context supplies date, direction of trade, and the company it kept.
  • Classical archaeology combines excavation, art historical analysis, and ancient texts, and its characteristic error is letting the texts dictate the interpretation.
  • The field grew out of Bourbon tunnelling at Herculaneum, the Grand Tour antiquities trade, and Winckelmann's 1764 history, and it inherited a taste for white marble and monumental subjects.
  • The looted Euphronios krater survived while its tomb assemblage did not, which is the clearest statement of what looting destroys.
  • Pottery, stone, and coins survive; bronze was recycled, so nearly all surviving Greek bronzes came from the sea, and most famous Greek statues are Roman marble copies.

  • Evaluate stylistic attribution and materials analysis, using the Getty kouros to show what happens when the two disagree.

A rubbish layer that dates half of archaic Greek sculpture

In 480 BCE a Persian army took Athens and burned the buildings on the Acropolis, smashing the dedications standing there. When the Athenians came back, they did not repair the damaged statues. They buried them, packing the broken marble korai, the fragments of architecture, and the burnt debris into fills to level the rock for rebuilding. Excavation of those fills in the 1880s brought out a body of archaic sculpture, still carrying traces of its paint, that had gone into the ground on a known day.

That is what archaeologists call a destruction horizon, and it is worth more than almost any single object, because anything in it must have been made before 480 BCE. Whole sequences of style, pottery, and technique hang off that one date. This lesson is about how such fixed points are built and how everything else is hung from them.

Key idea: Dating in classical archaeology is a chain: relative sequences established from layers and typology, anchored at a few points to calendar dates by history or science.

Relative dating one: stratigraphy

The basic principle is the law of superposition. In an undisturbed sequence of deposits, the lower layer was laid down before the upper one. A site is not a cake, though, and real stratigraphy is a tangle of layers, pits cut down through earlier layers, walls built into them, and robbing trenches where later people took the stone away.

Excavators therefore record every discrete deposit, cut, and structure as a separate unit, and record how each relates to the others: earlier than, later than, or contemporary with. Edward Harris formalised this in 1979 as a diagram now universally used, in which each unit is a box and lines record the relationships, producing the site's sequence independent of how thick or dramatic any layer looked.

Two failure modes matter and both have specific names. Residuality is old material in a later deposit: dig a pit in the second century CE through a first century BCE floor and the pit fill contains the older sherds, so the pottery is older than the deposit. Intrusion is later material in an earlier deposit, from animal burrows, roots, later pits, or careless digging. The rule that handles both is that a deposit is dated by its latest datable find, not its most impressive one, because one intrusive coin can only ever make a layer look later, while a thousand residual sherds cannot make it earlier.

Why this matters: A layer's date is set by the latest object in it, which is why a spectacular early find in a late fill dates nothing but itself.

Relative dating two: typology and seriation

The second method needs no layers at all. Artefacts of the same class change gradually in shape and decoration, so a series of them can be arranged into a developmental sequence. Flinders Petrie worked out the technique in the 1890s on Egyptian graves, ordering them by the changing shapes of their pots, and the method has been standard ever since.

In the Greek and Roman Mediterranean the master sequence is Athenian fine pottery, and the reason is economic. Athens exported decorated pottery on a very large scale for centuries, so Athenian cups and jars turn up in Etruscan tombs, Black Sea colonies, Egyptian ports, and Spanish settlements. Once the Athenian sequence is tied to Athenian dated deposits, an Athenian sherd becomes a dating tool anywhere it is found. Roman fine wares, especially the red-gloss tableware conventionally called terra sigillata, do the same job for the Roman period, with the advantage that many pieces are stamped with the maker's name.

Seriation, the statistical version, orders assemblages by the changing proportions of types rather than by the presence or absence of a single form, on the principle that a type is introduced, becomes popular, and fades. The output is a sequence, not a date. It always needs anchoring.

The point: Typology gives order and stratigraphy gives order; neither gives a year, and the whole edifice depends on a small number of anchored points.

Turning a sequence into calendar dates

Four kinds of anchor are available, and classical archaeology is unusual in having so many.

Historical destruction horizons. The Persian sack of Athens in 480 BCE, the Roman destruction of Corinth in 146 BCE, and above all the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, which sealed Pompeii and Herculaneum, are events dated by written sources that produced sealed deposits. Everything in the deposit predates the event.

Coins. A coin bearing an emperor's name and titles can often be dated to within a year or two, because the titles change. A coin in a deposit establishes a terminus post quem, a date after which the deposit was formed, since it cannot have been buried before it was struck. It does not date the deposit precisely, because coins circulate for decades. A layer sealed under a floor of known date has a terminus ante quem, a date before which it was formed.

Work an example. A floor contains a coin struck in 161 CE and is sealed by a mosaic laid, on an inscription, in 200 CE. The floor was laid after 161 and before 200. Now change one input: suppose the coin was struck in 161 but is very worn, and the same type is known to have stayed in circulation for eighty years. The terminus post quem is unchanged, because a coin cannot be buried before it exists, but any attempt to date the floor near 161 collapses. The lower bound is firm and the estimate that hangs near it is not.

Dendrochronology and radiocarbon. Tree-ring sequences give calendar-precise dates where preserved timber exists, which in the Mediterranean is rare outside waterlogged and burned contexts. Radiocarbon dates organic material but, for the historical period, is often less precise than the pottery: the calibration curve has flat stretches in which a single measurement can correspond to a range of two centuries.

Other physical methods. Thermoluminescence dates when fired clay was last heated, which makes it useful against ceramic forgeries. Archaeomagnetic dating and optically stimulated luminescence have specialised uses.

An honest example of what happens when the anchors disagree: the eruption that buried Akrotiri on Thera. Radiocarbon determinations cluster in the late seventeenth century BCE. Traditional archaeological chronology, built on synchronisms with dated Egyptian material, places it around a century later. The gap has been argued for decades, and both sides have serious evidence. It matters, because the eruption is itself a fixed point that Aegean Bronze Age chronology hangs from, and Lesson 3 has to take a position on a question specialists have not settled.

Remember: A coin gives a firm date after which, a sealing floor gives a firm date before which, and everything in between is an estimate whose confidence depends on how long the objects stayed in use.

Reading the material itself

An object also carries evidence in its substance, and this is where the laboratory has changed the field most.

The consequences are large. Distinguishing where a pot was made from where it was found turns a distribution map of findspots into a map of trade. Marble sourcing shows that Athenian builders imported stone across the Aegean. And residue analysis has repeatedly overturned assumptions about what particular vessel shapes were for, which matters for Lesson 7's argument about reading daily life off images.

Why this matters: Material analysis answers questions of origin and use that style cannot, and it regularly contradicts the functional labels museums inherited from the nineteenth century.

Style, attribution, and its critics

The oldest tool in the kit is the eye. Style changes over time in ways that can be described and ordered, which is Winckelmann's insight from Lesson 1, and it can also be individual.

The most ambitious application is John Beazley's work on Athenian painted pottery. Over a career from the 1910s to the 1960s, Beazley examined tens of thousands of vases and sorted them into the hands of individual painters, on the basis of small habitual details: how an ear is drawn, how the folds at an ankle are handled, how a hand is articulated. Very few of these painters signed anything, so most of his names are inventions of convenience, such as the Berlin Painter, named from a vase in Berlin. The results are the framework in which Athenian vase painting is still studied, and they let a fragment be placed in a workshop and a decade.

The method has serious critics. James Whitley and others have argued that it imports a modern romantic idea of the individual artist into an ancient craft industry, that the attributions cannot be independently tested, that Beazley's criteria were never fully stated, and that treating pots as the work of named masters distracts from what they actually were, which is mass-produced tableware traded in bulk. Defenders answer that the attributions have proved consistent when new fragments join known vases, and that the method has real predictive success.

You do not need to resolve that. What you need is the working principle: stylistic argument is powerful for ordering and grouping, weaker for absolute dating, and at its most dangerous when it is the only evidence.

The upshot: Connoisseurship reliably groups objects and orders sequences, and it cannot on its own establish that something is ancient.

What forgery tests

Which brings us to the case that puts every method in this lesson under pressure at once.

In 1985 the J. Paul Getty Museum bought a marble kouros, an over-life-size standing male nude of the type made in Greece in the sixth century BCE, for a sum reported in the millions of dollars. It had no findspot. Its documented history rested on letters describing a Swiss private collection, and the museum knew the risk.

The scientific analysis was encouraging. The stone is dolomitic marble, and its surface showed a layer of de-dolomitisation, a slow chemical alteration that was argued to require centuries of burial and to be impossible to fake. That argument, presented by a geologist, carried real weight.

The art historical analysis pulled the other way. Specialists who examined the statue found that its features did not belong together: the treatment of the hair suited one regional tradition, the proportions another, and the whole read as a competent assembly of parts from different places and moments rather than as a work made within a single workshop tradition. Several respected scholars pronounced it wrong on sight without being able to say precisely why, which is exactly the kind of judgment that is impossible to argue with and impossible to dismiss.

Then the documents failed. One of the provenance letters carried a Swiss postal code that had not been introduced until long after the letter's supposed date, and a bank account number that did not check out. Separately, a marble fragment surfaced that was demonstrably a modern forgery and closely related to the Getty piece, and it emerged that the de-dolomitisation effect could be produced artificially. For years the Getty displayed the statue with a label acknowledging it might be a modern forgery, which is either admirable candour or an unusual way to run a museum, depending on your view. It was taken off display in 2018 and the museum now treats it as a forgery.

The lesson is not that science failed or that connoisseurship won. It is that a single line of evidence, however technical, cannot carry an object on its own, and that the absence of context, which is what made the whole argument necessary, is itself the strongest warning sign an object can carry.

Bottom line: Authentication requires converging lines of evidence, and an object without a findspot has already lost the one line that would have settled the question.

Common misconceptions

  • Radiocarbon dating solves classical chronology. For the historical period the calibration curve is often too flat to beat pottery, and radiocarbon dates organic material, not the marble or bronze that most classical objects are made of.
  • The most impressive object in a layer dates the layer. A deposit is dated by its latest find, because old material is routinely redeposited into later contexts.
  • A coin in a deposit gives the date of the deposit. It gives a date after which the deposit formed. Coins circulate for decades, sometimes much longer.
  • Scientific analysis is objective and stylistic judgment is subjective, so science should win. In the Getty kouros case the scientific argument was the one that turned out to be reproducible artificially, while the stylistic objections held up.
  • Where a pot was found tells you where it was made. Only chemical or petrographic analysis of the fabric establishes that, and the difference between the two is what turns findspots into a trade map.

Putting it together

  • The Persian destruction fills on the Athenian Acropolis are a dated horizon from which a large body of archaic sculpture and pottery hangs.
  • Stratigraphy orders deposits by superposition and recorded relationships, with residuality and intrusion as the standard hazards; a deposit is dated by its latest find.
  • Typology and seriation order artefacts independently of layers, and Athenian fine pottery serves as the Mediterranean's master sequence because it was exported everywhere.
  • Calendar dates come from historical destruction horizons, coins, dendrochronology, radiocarbon, and thermoluminescence, and the Thera eruption shows what happens when methods disagree.
  • A coin gives a terminus post quem and a sealing floor a terminus ante quem; the interval between them is where judgment enters.
  • Petrography, isotope sourcing, and residue analysis establish origin and use, which style cannot.
  • Beazley's attributions organise Athenian vase painting and are criticised for importing a modern idea of the artist; the Getty kouros shows why no single line of evidence can authenticate an object without context.

Module 2: The Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age

The palaces of Crete and the citadels of the Mycenaean mainland, the excavation practices that recovered them and damaged them, the collapse that ended them, and the centuries of recovery in which Greek art reassembled itself out of geometry and eastern imports.

The Aegean Bronze Age, and What Schliemann Cost

Five graves inside the citadel wall at Mycenae

In 1876, digging just inside the Lion Gate at Mycenae in the northeastern Peloponnese, Heinrich Schliemann found a circle of upright slabs enclosing five deep shaft graves. Inside were nineteen bodies and an extraordinary quantity of gold: sheet-gold masks laid over the faces of the men, gold diadems, inlaid daggers with hunting scenes worked in silver and niello, cups, and hundreds of small gold discs sewn onto clothing that had long since rotted away.

Schliemann identified the burials as those of Agamemnon and his companions, murdered on their return from Troy. The dates make that impossible. The shaft graves belong to roughly the sixteenth century BCE, three or four hundred years before any traditional date for the Trojan War. What he had actually found was more interesting than what he claimed: the first physical evidence that a wealthy, organised, literate Bronze Age society had existed in Greece a thousand years before the classical city-states, and that Greek prehistory was far deeper than anyone had supposed.

Key idea: The Aegean Bronze Age was recovered by excavators whose interpretations were frequently wrong and whose methods destroyed evidence, and both halves of that sentence belong in any honest account of the period.

Two cautions about that table. The contrast between peaceful Crete and warlike Mycenae is drawn too sharply in older books: Cretan sites have weapons and there is evidence of violence, and the absence of fortification walls may say as much about naval control of the sea as about temperament. And the word palace is a modern convention. The Cretan complexes contain vast storage magazines, workshops, shrines, and administrative archives, and specialists increasingly prefer the neutral term court-centred building, because calling them palaces smuggles in a king nobody has found.

Why this matters: The vocabulary used for Bronze Age Crete was invented by its first excavator, and terms such as palace carry assumptions about kingship that the evidence does not establish.

Knossos, and the problem of restoration

Arthur Evans began excavating at Knossos in 1900, bought the site, named the civilisation Minoan after the mythical king Minos, and worked there for three decades. What he uncovered is genuinely remarkable: a complex of over a thousand rooms around a central court, storage magazines holding rows of storage jars taller than a person, light wells bringing daylight into interior rooms, drainage systems, and painted plaster on the walls.

He also rebuilt it. Evans reconstructed substantial parts of the building in reinforced concrete, replacing the tapering wooden columns with painted concrete ones and roofing over rooms to protect and display them. He commissioned the Swiss artists Emile Gillieron and his son to restore the frescoes, which survived as small scattered fragments of painted plaster fallen from walls.

The problem is not that he intervened. Some intervention was necessary to keep the excavated fabric standing. The problem is that the intervention is not visually separable from the original, so a visitor cannot tell what is ancient. And the fresco restorations went well beyond what the fragments support. The relief fresco known as the Prince of the Lilies, one of the most reproduced images of Minoan Crete, was assembled from pieces that specialists have argued do not belong to a single figure, with the crown, torso, and legs possibly coming from different compositions and even different subjects. Some published restorations depict scenes for which only a hand or a face survives.

Evans's picture of a peaceful, elegant, matriarchal-leaning Minoan society, widely reproduced through the twentieth century, is inseparable from those restorations, and it reflects his interpretation as much as the evidence. That is not a reason to dismiss Knossos. It is a reason to ask, in front of any Minoan image, how much of what you are looking at was found and how much was supplied.

The point: At Knossos the reconstruction and the evidence are physically fused, so the familiar image of Minoan civilisation is partly an artefact of one excavator's interpretation.

Akrotiri, the site that was not looted by its own survivors

On Thera, the island now called Santorini, a volcanic eruption in the second half of the second millennium BCE buried the town of Akrotiri under metres of ash and pumice. Spyridon Marinatos began excavating it in 1967 and found streets, multi-storey houses, and wall paintings preserved to their full height, in a state no site on Crete can match.

Two features of the deposit are worth noticing because they show how to read a disaster. Almost no human remains have been found, and few precious objects, which together indicate that the inhabitants had warning, probably from earthquakes preceding the eruption, and left. Compare Pompeii in Lesson 13, where people died where they sheltered. And the ash sealed everything instantly, so the frescoes come with their rooms: a miniature frieze showing ships between towns, a room with swallows and lilies, boys boxing, a fisherman with his catch.

The eruption is also the chronological problem raised in Lesson 2. Radiocarbon determinations place it in the late seventeenth century BCE; synchronisms built on Egyptian material place it around a century later. The dispute is unresolved, and this course will say only that the eruption occurred in the later part of the Aegean Late Bronze Age and that the hundred-year gap has consequences for everything dated by association with it.

Remember: Akrotiri preserves complete painted rooms because the town was evacuated and then sealed, and the date of that sealing is still argued about by a century.

Mycenaean Greece, and the tablets that survived by burning

The mainland citadels look nothing like Knossos. Mycenae and Tiryns are fortified with walls of unworked limestone blocks so large that later Greeks assumed the Cyclopes had built them, a term still used for the masonry. The Lion Gate at Mycenae, with its relieving triangle carrying two flanking animals over the lintel, dates to around 1250 BCE and is the earliest monumental sculpture in Europe still standing where it was set.

Outside the walls are the tholos tombs, corbelled stone chambers approached by a long walled passage and buried under a mound. The largest, conventionally called the Treasury of Atreus, has a chamber some fourteen metres across and about as high, and was the widest and highest dome anywhere until Roman concrete construction surpassed it more than a thousand years later.

The most informative material, though, is a set of clay tablets. Mycenaean administrators kept records on unfired clay, which would ordinarily have dissolved back into mud within a season. The tablets from Knossos, Pylos, Thebes, and elsewhere survive because the buildings that held them burned, firing the clay hard. We have the accounts of these societies only because they were destroyed.

Michael Ventris showed in 1952 that the script, Linear B, records an early form of Greek. The content is administrative rather than literary: inventories of chariot wheels, allocations of rations, lists of textile workers with their children, records of livestock, land tenure, and offerings to deities, some of whose names are recognisable as later Greek gods. There is no poetry, no history, and no correspondence. What emerges is a centralised palace economy tracking goods and people in detail, with a vocabulary of officials and dependent workers that has no direct equivalent in later Greece.

The upshot: The written evidence for Mycenaean Greece is entirely administrative, survives only because the archives burned, and describes a bureaucratic redistributive economy quite unlike the world of the later city-states.

What Schliemann did, stated plainly

Schliemann is the figure students most often meet as either a hero or a villain, and neither version is accurate enough to be useful.

What he got right. He believed a real place lay behind the Homeric poems and he was right, in the limited sense that the mound of Hisarlik in northwestern Turkey is a genuine long-occupied Bronze Age city. He demonstrated the existence of a rich Aegean Bronze Age at Mycenae. He excavated on a scale and with a persistence that professional scholarship had not attempted. And after 1882 he employed the architect Wilhelm Dorpfeld, who introduced systematic stratigraphic recording; Schliemann accepted the discipline and his later work is substantially better.

What he cost. At Troy he drove an enormous trench straight down through the mound, and in doing so removed the upper levels to reach what he assumed was the Homeric city. Those upper levels included precisely the phases, now called Troy VI and VIIa, that later excavators would identify as the strongest candidates for a Homeric Troy. That material is simply gone. He recorded find contexts inconsistently, and in the earlier seasons often not at all.

He also misdated on a grand scale. The hoard he announced in 1873 as Priam's Treasure comes from a level around a thousand years earlier than any plausible Trojan War. He removed it from Ottoman territory in breach of his excavation permit, was pursued in the courts, and settled by paying compensation. The collection went to Berlin, was removed to Moscow by Soviet forces in 1945, and its presence in the Pushkin Museum was publicly acknowledged only in 1993, so the objects have been contested property for a century and a half.

And he was an unreliable narrator of his own work. Several of his published accounts are demonstrably embellished, including details of how and with whom the Troy treasure was found. The dramatic remark about gazing on the face of Agamemnon, attached to the Mycenae mask in countless retellings, is not documented in his own words and is best treated as a later invention.

One genuinely open question remains: a few scholars, notably William Calder and David Traill, have suggested that the famous gold mask was modified in modern times or is not what it seems. Most specialists disagree and accept it as an ancient object from Shaft Grave V. The doubt is a minority position, and it is worth knowing that it exists.

Bottom line: Schliemann established that the Aegean Bronze Age was real and destroyed a great deal of the evidence for it, and the specific losses at Troy are the levels that would have mattered most for his own question.

Between roughly 1200 and 1100 BCE the palatial system ended. The mainland citadels were destroyed or abandoned, administration stopped, Linear B ceased to be written and the ability to write it was lost for four hundred years, monumental building stopped, long-distance trade contracted sharply, and settlement numbers and population appear to have fallen steeply.

The causes are debated and no single explanation has won. Candidates include earthquake, drought and climate deterioration indicated by pollen and isotope records, the movement of groups the Egyptian sources call the Sea Peoples, internal revolt, and the fragility of a system in which highly specialised palace economies depended on each other and on long trade routes, so that failures cascaded. Eric Cline's synthesis argues for a systems collapse in which several stresses combined, and that is close to the current centre of gravity. HIST 210 treats the eastern Mediterranean picture; what matters here is the archaeological consequence, which is that Greece enters several centuries with almost no monumental architecture, no writing, and very little imported material, and that the recovery from that point is the subject of the next lesson.

What matters here: The collapse removed writing, monumental building, and long-distance exchange from Greece for centuries, and its causes are best described as several stresses acting on an interdependent system rather than as one event.

Common misconceptions

  • Schliemann found Homer's Troy. He found a real Bronze Age city and dug through the levels most likely to correspond to a Homeric Troy in order to reach a much earlier one.
  • The Mask of Agamemnon depicts Agamemnon. It is three or four centuries older than any traditional date for the Trojan War, and the name is Schliemann's identification, not an ancient label.
  • What you see at Knossos is what was found. Substantial parts are Evans's reinforced concrete reconstruction, and several famous frescoes are restorations built from small fragments.
  • The Minoans were a peaceful society and the Mycenaeans a warlike one. The contrast is drawn too sharply; Crete has weapons and evidence of violence, and the absence of walls may reflect control of the sea.
  • Linear B tablets contain Mycenaean literature. They are administrative records of rations, personnel, livestock, and offerings, preserved only because the archives burned.

Summing up

  • The shaft graves at Mycenae proved the existence of a rich Bronze Age Greece and are three to four centuries older than any traditional Trojan War date.

A vase taller than a person, standing over a grave

Around 750 BCE an Athenian potter made a clay amphora more than a metre and a half tall and set it over a grave in the cemetery by the Dipylon gate, on the northwest side of the city. It was not a container in any ordinary sense. It had no floor: the base was pierced so that liquid offerings poured into the vase would run down into the earth and reach the dead person below. Its shoulder and belly carry bands of precisely drawn meander and zigzag, and in a panel between the handles a figured scene shows a body laid out on a bier with mourners on either side, arms raised to their heads in the gesture of grief, and a chequered cloth raised above the corpse so both it and the body can be seen at once.

That vase is the best single introduction to the two centuries this lesson covers, because it shows a society that has lost the Bronze Age palaces and their bureaucracy, and is building something quite different: display, competition, and eventually a new writing system, organised around families and sanctuaries rather than around a palace.

Key idea: After the palaces fell, Greek material culture rebuilt itself from a very low base into a system in which status was displayed at the grave and then, increasingly, at communal sanctuaries.

How dark the Dark Age was

The centuries after about 1100 BCE were long called the Greek Dark Age, and the label captures something real: writing disappeared, monumental architecture stopped, the range and quantity of imported goods contracted, settlements shrank, and the burial record thins out. Nobody disputes that the Aegean of 1000 BCE was materially poorer and less connected than the Aegean of 1300 BCE.

The term is now used with care for two reasons. It smuggles in a value judgment, and it also turned out to be partly an artefact of what had been dug. The site that changed the picture most is Lefkandi on the island of Euboea. In 1981 excavators there uncovered, under a mound at Toumba, the remains of an apsidal building roughly fifty metres long, with a surrounding colonnade, built around the beginning of the first millennium BCE. Inside were two shafts. One held the inhumed body of a woman with gold jewellery, including elaborate breast ornaments, and an iron knife. The other held the cremated remains of a man in a bronze amphora of Cypriot manufacture, and beside them four horses had been killed and buried.

That is not the archaeology of a subsistence village. It is a monumental structure, a warrior burial of a kind Homer describes, imported metalwork, and conspicuous destruction of wealth, at a date when Greece was supposed to be at its poorest. The lesson is not that the collapse did not happen. It is that recovery was uneven, that some communities on trade routes kept eastern connections alive, and that a period looks dark partly in proportion to how little of it has been excavated.

Why this matters: Lefkandi shows monumental building, imported bronze, and lavish burial at a moment the standard account called impoverished, which is a reminder that absence of evidence and evidence of absence are different claims.

The pottery sequence, and why it carries so much weight

With no writing and little architecture, pottery does most of the work for these centuries, and the sequence is unusually clean.

Two things about that first row deserve attention. The compass-drawn circle is a technical innovation: the potter fixed a pivot and used a multiple brush to draw a set of perfectly concentric arcs in one pass. And Protogeometric shapes are better proportioned and more sharply articulated than what came immediately before, which is not what a story of uninterrupted decline predicts.

The return of the human figure in Late Geometric is the moment that matters most for later Greek art. The figures are silhouettes built from geometric parts: a triangular torso, a round head with a reserved dot for the eye, stick limbs. But they are arranged into readable scenes, above all funerary ones. The prothesis, the laying out of the body, and the ekphora, the procession carrying it to the grave, appear again and again, along with rows of chariots and files of warriors with distinctive figure-of-eight shields.

What are these scenes evidence for? Not, straightforwardly, for what a funeral looked like, and Lesson 7 develops that caution at length. They are evidence for what a wealthy Athenian family wanted proclaimed at the graveside: numbers of mourners, horses, chariots, and armed men, which is to say the size and reach of the household. The vase is an advertisement standing permanently in a public cemetery.

The point: Geometric funerary scenes record the claims a family made about itself, and reading them as documentary photographs of ritual mistakes an assertion for a record.

The east returns

From roughly 750 BCE the material record changes character, and the conventional name for the change is the Orientalising period. Greek workshops begin producing and adapting motifs and techniques from the Levant, Syria, Assyria, Phoenicia, and Egypt: lions, sphinxes, griffins, floral chains of palmette and lotus, friezes of animals, and curvilinear ornament in place of rectilinear.

The contact is physical and it is archaeologically visible in both directions. At Al Mina, near the mouth of the Orontes in what is now Turkey, large quantities of Greek pottery appear from around 800 BCE, though whether the site was a Greek trading settlement or a Levantine port that received Greek goods is still argued. In the other direction, Greeks settled at Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples from around 770 BCE, and the cemetery there has produced Greek, Phoenician, Egyptian, and local Italian material in the same graves.

The single most consequential import was not an object. Sometime around 800 BCE Greeks adopted the Phoenician consonantal alphabet and made one crucial modification: Phoenician had letters for consonant sounds Greek did not use, and Greek speakers reassigned those letters to vowels. That produced the first writing system with full and obligatory vowel notation, and it is the ancestor of the Latin alphabet you are reading now. Britannica's articles on the Greek and Phoenician alphabets set out the letter-by-letter correspondences.

Two of the earliest surviving Greek inscriptions show what the new technology was immediately used for. A jug from the Dipylon cemetery in Athens, of about 740 BCE, carries a scratched line announcing a prize for the best dancer. A cup from a grave at Pithekoussai, of around 730 BCE, carries three lines referring to the cup of Nestor and to the desire that drinking from it inspires. Both are on drinking vessels, both are playful, and both are metrical. Writing arrives in Greece attached to the party rather than to the treasury, which is the reverse of the Bronze Age pattern.

Remember: The Greek alphabet is a Phoenician system with unused consonant signs converted to vowels, and its earliest surviving uses are verse graffiti on drinking cups rather than administrative records.

What Orientalising art actually looks like

Corinth, not Athens, leads the seventh century. Protocorinthian workshops developed the black-figure technique, painting figures as silhouettes and then incising interior detail with a fine point so that the pale clay shows through, and added red and white. On the small scale, Corinthian perfume flasks carry miniature friezes of extraordinary precision.

The best known piece is a small jug of about 640 BCE, found in an Etruscan tomb at Veii and now in Rome, conventionally called the Chigi vase. Its main frieze shows two lines of armoured infantry advancing on each other, with a piper setting the pace, and it is the earliest detailed image of what later Greeks called hoplite fighting. Note the caution that runs through this whole course: the vase shows what a Corinthian painter chose to depict for a customer, and historians disagree about how closely it matches actual battlefield practice.

In bronze, the sanctuaries fill with imported and Greek-made eastern forms. The great cauldrons dedicated at Olympia carry cast griffin heads on long curving necks riveted round the rim, with open beaks and staring eyes. In stone, the earliest Greek sculpture in the round appears in what is called the Daedalic style, with flat faces, triangular hair falling in horizontal tiers, and a strict frontality: the limestone figure known as the Lady of Auxerre, probably Cretan and of about 640 BCE, is the standard example.

The upshot: Orientalising is not imitation but selective adaptation, with Corinthian workshops inventing the black-figure technique and Greek sculptors absorbing Egyptian and Near Eastern conventions into a new tradition.

Where the wealth went

One archaeological pattern in this period has large historical consequences, and it is visible only because thousands of finds have been counted.

In the Geometric period, valuable objects go into graves, as at Lefkandi and in the rich Athenian burials. During the eighth and seventh centuries the flow changes. Grave goods become sparser in many regions, while dedications at sanctuaries increase enormously. Olympia has produced thousands of bronze tripods, figurines, and pieces of armour, much of it captured and dedicated. Delphi, Samos, and Argos show the same trend. Anthony Snodgrass drew attention to this shift, and its implication is social: display of wealth moves from the family tomb, which advertises a household, to the sanctuary, which is shared by a whole community or by Greeks in general.

The same period sees Greeks establishing settlements around the Mediterranean and Black Sea, at Pithekoussai and Cumae in Italy, at Syracuse in Sicily, which Thucydides dates to 733 BCE, and eventually as far as Massalia in southern France. The archaeology broadly supports the literary foundation dates while complicating the picture: the earliest levels at several sites contain substantial local material and evidence of intermarriage, so a foundation was rarely the arrival of a sealed Greek community into empty land. HIST 210 covers the political story; the material point here is that Greek objects, Greek script, and Greek sanctuary practice spread together, and that the seventh century Greek world is far more connected than the tenth century one.

Bottom line: Wealth display migrates from graves to sanctuaries across the eighth and seventh centuries, which is one of the clearest archaeological signals of the emergence of communities larger than the household.

Common misconceptions

  • The Greek Dark Age was a uniform collapse into subsistence poverty. Lefkandi shows a fifty metre building, gold, imported bronze, and horse burial at a supposedly impoverished date.
  • Geometric funerary scenes show us what Greek funerals looked like. They show what a family wanted claimed at the graveside, and the number of chariots is a boast rather than a headcount.
  • The Greeks invented the alphabet. They adopted a Phoenician consonantal system and innovated by assigning unused consonant signs to vowels, which is a real and important change but not an invention from nothing.
  • Orientalising means Greek artists copying eastern models. Greek workshops selected, recombined, and transformed motifs, and invented new techniques such as Corinthian black-figure in the process.

Module 3: Greek Art and Architecture

The Greek body from the rigid archaic kouros to the weight-shifted classical figure, the temple as a system of proportion and optical adjustment, and painted pottery read carefully for what it can and cannot say about how people lived.

A marble youth from a grave at Anavysos

At Anavysos on the coast of southern Attica, a marble statue of a naked young man stands 1.94 metres tall, made around 530 BCE. He stands with his left foot forward, arms straight down at his sides, fists closed against his thighs, shoulders square, looking straight ahead with the faint upturn at the corners of the mouth that art historians call the archaic smile. His hair falls behind him in a mass of beaded strands. Traces of red pigment survive on the hair and on the band around it.

He is not a god, and he is not a likeness. The inscribed base identifies the grave as that of a young man named Kroisos, killed in the front line of battle, and invites the passer-by to stop and grieve. The statue is a marker for a dead man, made in a type that hundreds of other statues share exactly. Understanding why a society would commemorate a specific individual with a deliberately generic image is where the study of Greek sculpture begins.

Key idea: The archaic kouros is a standard type used for many different individuals and purposes, so its meaning comes from its setting and its inscription rather than from any individuality in the figure.

What a kouros is, and where the type came from

A kouros, plural kouroi, is a freestanding statue of a nude standing youth, produced across the Greek world from roughly 640 to 480 BCE. The type is astonishingly consistent: frontal, symmetrical, left foot advanced with the weight still evenly distributed, arms at the sides, eyes level. The female equivalent, the kore, is always clothed, usually holding an offering, and often shown with one hand drawing the drapery aside.

They served two main functions. Some, like the Anavysos figure, marked graves. Many more were dedications in sanctuaries, especially of Apollo, where they stood in ranks as permanent gifts to the god. The same type does both jobs, which is why the inscription matters so much: without it, the statue does not tell you whether it represents a dedicator, a dead man, or the god.

The debt to Egypt is direct and was acknowledged in antiquity. Egyptian standing male statues had used a fixed proportional grid for centuries, and the pose with the left foot advanced is Egyptian. Diodorus records a story that two Greek sculptors, working separately on different islands, produced halves of a statue that fitted together because both used the Egyptian system. What Greeks changed matters as much as what they borrowed. Egyptian figures retain a back pillar and a slab of uncarved stone between the legs and arms, and are usually clothed. Greek sculptors cut all of that away, freeing the figure into space, and made it nude.

Across the sixth century the type does change, gradually and consistently: anatomy becomes more accurately observed, the transitions between muscle groups softer, the pattern of hair less schematic. That gradual change is what makes kouroi datable by style, and it is what a forger has to imitate, which is why the Getty kouros from Lesson 2 failed, since its features belonged to different moments and regions at once.

Why this matters: The kouros is a single type serving grave and sanctuary alike, adapted from Egyptian practice and then freed from the block, and its slow stylistic development is the backbone of archaic chronology.

The shift, statue by statue

Around 480 BCE something changes that is easier to see than to describe, and the standard way to see it is to line up four objects.

The Kritios Boy, from the Acropolis, of about 480 BCE, is the earliest surviving figure in which the weight is not evenly distributed. The right leg carries the body and the left is relaxed, so the right hip rises, the left knee bends slightly, the spine curves in compensation, and the head turns a little to one side. The archaic smile is gone; the mouth is level and serious. Nothing about the pose is dramatic, and everything about the figure's relationship to gravity has changed.

The name for this arrangement is contrapposto: the counterposing of engaged and relaxed sides of the body, so that a figure appears capable of movement rather than held in position. It is the single most consequential formal development in western figure sculpture, and every classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Renaissance standing figure descends from it.

The Riace bronzes, two over-life-size warriors pulled out of the sea off Calabria in 1972 and dated to about 460 to 450 BCE, show what the mature system looks like in the original material. They are bronze, which is what most classical Greek statues actually were. Their lips and nipples are inlaid in copper, the teeth of one are silver, and the eyes are inserted assemblies of ivory or bone, glass, and stone. They are not white, not smooth, and not calm in the way a plaster cast suggests: they are dark, glinting, and coloured at the details.

The Doryphoros, the spear-bearer of Polykleitos of Argos, made around 440 BCE, is the theoretical statement. Polykleitos wrote a treatise, now lost, setting out a system of proportion he called the Kanon, and made the statue to demonstrate it. The figure balances engaged and relaxed limbs diagonally: the weight-bearing right leg pairs with the relaxed left arm, and the relaxed left leg with the tensed right arm holding the spear, producing a cross-wise balance. The bronze original is lost. Everything we know of it comes from Roman marble copies.

The fourth century then loosens the system. Praxiteles made the Aphrodite of Knidos around the middle of the century, the first monumental female nude in Greek sculpture, in a pose that acknowledges a viewer. Lysippos, later in the century, used a slimmer canon with a smaller head relative to the body and figures that occupy space in more directions, so that they ask to be walked around.

The point: Contrapposto is not a style but a structural discovery about how a standing body distributes weight, and Polykleitos turned it into an explicit proportional system.

How the objects were actually made

Large Greek bronzes were cast by the indirect lost-wax process, and understanding it explains a great deal about what survives.

A clay model is made; piece moulds are taken from it; wax is applied inside those moulds to the thickness the bronze will be; the wax shells are assembled around a clay core, held by metal pins; an outer mould is built up; the whole is heated so the wax runs out; and molten bronze is poured into the resulting cavity. Because the moulds are taken from a reusable model, a workshop can cast the same figure more than once, and can cast a statue in parts, arms, legs, and head separately, and join them. The Metropolitan Museum's account of the technique sets out the stages in detail.

Two consequences follow. Bronze can support a pose with an outstretched arm or a raised leg, since the metal is strong in tension. And bronze is worth melting, which is why so few originals survive, as Lesson 1 set out.

Marble is worked with a point to rough out, a claw chisel to model, flat chisels to finish, drills for deep undercutting such as hair and drapery folds, and abrasives to polish. Roman copyists worked from plaster casts of Greek originals, transferring measurements mechanically with a pointing process. Plaster casts of exactly this kind, taken from famous Greek statues, were found at Baiae on the Bay of Naples, which is direct evidence for how the copying industry worked.

So when you meet a Roman marble version of a Greek bronze, expect several differences. There will be a strut or a tree trunk, because marble cannot hold an unsupported arm. The scale may differ. The surface finish is a Roman workshop's, not a Greek one's. And the word copy overstates the case: many are variations, adjusted in pose or attribute for a Roman buyer, so reconstructing a lost original from several copies is genuine detective work with a real error bar.

Remember: Lost-wax casting allowed repetition, joining, and unsupported poses; Roman marble versions add supports, change scale, and often vary the original, so a lost bronze is reconstructed rather than simply read off.

The statues were painted

The most persistent misconception about classical sculpture is that it was white, and the evidence against it has been accumulating for two hundred years.

Direct traces survive, especially where a statue was buried soon after it was made and stayed buried. The archaic korai from the Persian destruction fills on the Acropolis, discussed in Lesson 2, came up with red, blue, and green preserved on hair, eyes, lips, and the patterned borders of their clothing. The Alexander Sarcophagus from Sidon retains extensive colour. Architectural terracottas keep their paint routinely.

Where paint has vanished, it can often still be detected. Egyptian blue, a synthetic pigment used throughout antiquity, luminesces strongly under infrared imaging even when only microscopic traces remain. Raking light reveals surviving relief in the paint layer and differential weathering where pigment once protected the stone. Chemical analysis identifies cinnabar, ochres, malachite, and organic dyes.

Vinzenz Brinkmann and colleagues have built painted reconstructions from this evidence, exhibited widely and, in 2022, at the Metropolitan Museum in an exhibition devoted to ancient colour. The reconstructions provoke strong reactions, and part of that is worth taking seriously as a scholarly matter rather than only as a shock. A reconstruction has to choose saturation, and pigments as excavated tell you the substance rather than the exact tone, gloss, or layering; some specialists argue that the brightest reconstructions overstate the intensity, and that ancient painters used glazes and shading the traces cannot fully recover. What is not in dispute is the basic fact: Greek and Roman sculpture and architecture were coloured, and the white marble aesthetic is an accident of survival that Winckelmann turned into a principle.

The upshot: Polychromy is established beyond dispute by surviving pigment and by imaging techniques; the open questions concern tone, gloss, and layering, not whether the colour was there.

Common misconceptions

  • A kouros is a portrait of the dead man it commemorates. The type is generic and shared across hundreds of statues; the individual is named by the inscription, not by the face.
  • Greek sculptors invented the standing figure from nothing. The pose and the proportional grid come from Egypt. The Greek innovations were removing the back pillar and the connecting stone, and the nudity.
  • Contrapposto is a stylistic preference. It is a solution to a structural problem, and once found it becomes the basis of every standing figure in the western tradition.
  • Roman copies are reliable reproductions of Greek originals. Many are variations at a different scale in a different material with added supports, which is why reconstructing a lost bronze carries real uncertainty.
  • The evidence for painted sculpture is thin and the reconstructions are speculative. Pigment survives on many pieces and imaging detects more. What is debated is intensity and finish, not the existence of colour.

The Greek Temple and the Orders

An oak column still standing after seven hundred years

When Pausanias visited Olympia in the second century CE and wrote up what he saw, he noted that in the rear chamber of the temple of Hera one of the columns was still made of oak. The temple had been built around 590 BCE, and its columns had been replaced with stone ones piecemeal over the centuries as the timber rotted, leaving a single wooden survivor that a visitor could look at more than seven hundred years later.

That detail is the best way into Greek temple architecture, because it tells you where the stone forms came from. Early temples were built of mudbrick walls on stone footings, with timber columns, wooden beams, and terracotta roof tiles. When Greeks began building in stone in the seventh and sixth centuries BCE, they translated the carpentry into masonry and kept the joinery visible. A Doric frieze preserves, in marble, the ends of ceiling beams and the boards that filled the gaps between them.

Key idea: The Greek temple in stone is a monumentalised timber building, and several of its most characteristic features are petrified carpentry that no longer does the job it depicts.

What the building was for

Start with a correction, because most people import the wrong model. A Greek temple is not a church. It was not built to hold a congregation, and worship did not take place inside it.

The temple is a house for the cult statue of a deity, and a treasury for the offerings dedicated to that deity. The main room, the naos or cella, held the statue. In front of it a porch, the pronaos, and often behind it a matching rear chamber, the opisthodomos, sometimes used for storage.

The religion happened outside. The altar stood in the open air, in front of the temple, usually to the east, and it is where the animal was killed and burnt. That means the ritual focus of a sanctuary is a structure most visitors to archaeological sites walk past, since altars survive as foundations while temples survive as columns. The crowd stood outside in the open, watched the sacrifice, and afterwards ate the meat. The temple was the backdrop and the strongbox.

The plan vocabulary follows from this. A colonnade running all the way round the building is a peristyle, and a temple with one is peripteral; a double colonnade makes it dipteral. Canonical proportions settle around six columns across the front and thirteen along the sides, or eight by seventeen for the largest.

Why this matters: The temple houses the god and the treasure while the ritual happens at an open-air altar outside it, so reading a sanctuary means looking at the ground in front of the columns as well as at the columns.

The three orders

An order is not just a capital shape. It is an integrated system in which column, entablature, and proportions belong together.

The Doric frieze is where the carpentry origin is clearest. A triglyph is a block with two vertical grooves and two half grooves at the edges, and it sits where a ceiling beam end would have been. A metope is the panel between two triglyphs, occupying the space that was once an open gap or a boarded infill, and it is the standard field for relief sculpture. Under the triglyphs are small pegs called guttae, which imitate the dowels of the timber version.

The Corinthian capital, with its acanthus foliage, appears first inside buildings: the temple of Apollo at Bassae in Arcadia has an early example in its interior. Greeks used it sparingly. Romans adopted it as their default, which is why it dominates later classical architecture and every neoclassical bank facade descended from it.

The point: The orders are complete proportional systems rather than decorative choices, and the Doric frieze is a stone record of the wooden roof structure that preceded it.

The corner problem, and why it matters

Here is a design conflict that Greek architects worked on for two centuries, and it is worth following because it shows the system under strain.

Doric convention requires two things at once. A triglyph must be centred over each column, and a triglyph must also sit at each end of the frieze, flush with the corner of the building. Now count. The frieze band ends at the outer edge of the corner column's abacus, but the column's axis is set back from that edge by half the column's width. So the corner triglyph cannot be both flush with the corner and centred on the column. The two rules are incompatible, and the discrepancy is roughly half a triglyph's width.

Greek architects tried several answers. The commonest is angle contraction: the last intercolumniation before the corner is narrowed, so the corner triglyph slides into place without leaving a gap, at the cost of an irregular column spacing that a careful eye can see. Another is to widen the metopes near the corner and absorb the difference there. Another, used in some western Greek temples, is to accept a stretched corner metope and leave the mismatch visible.

Two things follow. First, this is real evidence that the Doric order was treated as a set of rules with authority rather than as a flexible style, since architects would rather distort the column spacing of a whole facade than break the frieze rule. Second, it is a diagnostic: how a temple handles its corners is a dating and regional indicator.

Remember: The Doric corner conflict is unsolvable within the rules, so every Doric temple contains a visible compromise, and which compromise it chose is evidence about when and where it was built.

The Parthenon, and how far builders went

The Parthenon was built on the Athenian Acropolis between 447 and 438 BCE, with its sculpture finished by 432, by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, in marble quarried at Mount Pentelikon about sixteen kilometres away. It is Doric, with eight columns across the front and seventeen along the flanks, and it also carries an Ionic continuous frieze around the outside of the cella wall, which is a deliberate mixing of the orders.

Its most discussed feature is that almost nothing in it is straight. The platform is not flat: it rises toward the centre, by several centimetres on the short sides and more on the long ones, so that a person sighting along the top step sees a shallow convex curve. The columns are not cylinders: each swells slightly in the lower half, a profile called entasis. The columns are not vertical: they lean inward, and if their axes were continued upward they would converge at a point well over a kilometre above the building. The corner columns are slightly thicker than the rest and stand slightly closer to their neighbours. The cella walls lean too. The consequence is that blocks are not interchangeable, and each had to be cut for its position.

Why do all this? Vitruvius, writing four centuries later, explains such adjustments as corrections for optical distortion: a long horizontal appears to sag in the middle, so it is built with a rise; a straight column appears pinched, so it is swelled; corner columns seen against bright sky appear thinner, so they are thickened. That explanation is ancient, coherent, and still the standard one in most handbooks.

It is also debated. Some scholars argue that the curvature has a practical function in shedding rainwater from the platform. Others argue the effect is aesthetic rather than corrective, giving the building a subtle tension and apparent liveliness rather than making it look straight. Careful modern surveys have shown that the refinements are not consistent enough across buildings to be a mechanical rule. The honest summary is that the refinements are real, extremely expensive, deliberate, and that their purpose is inferred rather than documented by anyone who worked on the building.

The upshot: The Parthenon's curvature, entasis, and inclination are measurable and deliberate; the optical-correction explanation comes from Vitruvius centuries later and remains an interpretation rather than a recorded intention.

How it was actually built, and who built it

Greek monumental masonry uses no mortar. Blocks are dressed so that their contact surfaces meet exactly at the visible margins, a technique called anathyrosis in which only the edges of a joint face are worked flat and the centre is hollowed slightly, so the joint is tight where it shows. Column drums are centred on each other by a square wooden dowel set in a socket at the centre of each face, and the fluting is carved after the drums are stacked, so that the flutes run true across the joints. Blocks are lifted by ropes running through U-shaped channels or into iron devices set in cuttings on the top surface, and many blocks still carry the lifting bosses that were meant to be chiselled off at the end.

Who did the work is documented in a way that is rare for the ancient world. The building accounts of the Erechtheion, the temple on the north side of the Acropolis begun after the Parthenon, were inscribed on stone and partly survive. They list payments by task: fluting a column, carving a section of frieze figure by figure. And they record the status of the workers, showing Athenian citizens, resident foreigners, and enslaved people working side by side on the same tasks, with the enslaved workers' wages paid to their owners. The daily rate for skilled work is the same across those categories.

Sit with that for a moment, because it is the kind of fact that only inscriptions supply. The most celebrated architecture of classical Athens was built by a mixed workforce that included enslaved craftsmen, paid at the standard rate into someone else's hand. Lesson 14 takes up inscriptions as a class of evidence, and this is a good example of why they matter: no literary source tells us this.

Bottom line: Greek temples were built dry, with joints worked only where they show, and the Erechtheion accounts document a workforce of citizens, metics, and enslaved craftsmen paid at the same rate for the same skilled tasks.

Common misconceptions

  • Greeks worshipped inside temples. Sacrifice took place at an open-air altar in front of the building; the temple housed the cult statue and the treasure.
  • The orders are decorative styles. Each is an integrated proportional system governing column, entablature, and spacing together, which is why the Doric corner conflict could not simply be ignored.
  • Triglyphs and guttae are ornament. They are stone versions of beam ends and dowels from the timber buildings the stone temple replaced.
  • The Parthenon is a rectilinear building. Its platform curves, its columns swell and lean inward, and its corner columns differ from the rest, so almost no two blocks are identical.
  • Optical correction is the established reason for the refinements. It is Vitruvius's explanation, written four centuries later, and drainage and aesthetic accounts are seriously argued alternatives.

Pulling it together

  • Greek temples began in timber and mudbrick, and Pausanias still saw an oak column at the Heraion at Olympia in the second century CE.
  • The temple housed the cult statue and dedications; sacrifice happened at an open-air altar outside, usually to the east.
  • Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian are complete systems distinguished by base, fluting, capital, frieze type, and proportion.
  • The Doric corner conflict cannot be solved within the rules, and each temple's compromise is a regional and chronological indicator.

Vase Painting, and What It Does and Does Not Show

A mixing bowl with two hundred and seventy figures, found in Italy

Around 570 BCE an Athenian workshop produced a large mixing bowl with spiral handles, decorated in six horizontal friezes with more than two hundred figures, a great many of them labelled by name in painted inscriptions. Two men signed it: Ergotimos, who made it, and Kleitias, who painted it. It is the most ambitious surviving Athenian vase of its period, and it is conventionally called the Francois Vase after the excavator who found it.

He found it in 1844 in an Etruscan tomb near Chiusi, in Tuscany, roughly a thousand kilometres from Athens. That fact is not incidental. The overwhelming majority of complete Athenian figured vases in the world's museums were dug out of tombs in Italy, because Etruscans buried them and Athenians mostly broke them. Any argument that begins with what Greek vases tell us about Greek life has to pass through the fact that the objects were made in one culture for an audience partly in another, and survive because of the burial customs of a third party.

Key idea: Athenian painted pottery is exceptionally abundant evidence that is also exceptionally filtered, by what the shape was for, by who was buying, and by which societies buried pots rather than smashing them.

How the surface was made

The technique is chemistry, and it is worth understanding because it explains what the painters could and could not do.

Athenian potters used a single clay, worked into two states: the vessel body, and a very fine liquid suspension of the same clay, often called the slip, used for painting. The whole pot was then fired once, in three phases. First the kiln was run with plenty of air, and everything turned red as the iron in the clay oxidised. Then the vents were closed and green wood was added, filling the kiln with smoke and starving it of oxygen, and everything turned black. Then the vents were reopened. The porous body reabsorbed oxygen and returned to red; the fine slip had sintered to a near-glassy skin that could not, and stayed black.

Black-figure paints the figures in slip as silhouettes, then cuts interior details through them with a sharp point so the clay shows through as fine red lines, with added red and white for accents. It is a technique of incision, and it produces crisp, hard-edged, essentially linear figures.

Red-figure, invented in Athens around 530 BCE, reverses the scheme: the background is painted in slip and the figures are left as reserved clay, with all interior detail drawn in slip with a brush. That change matters enormously, because a brush can do what a graver cannot. Painters used a raised relief line for contours, and diluted slip for softer brown lines, so they could suggest musculature, transparency of drapery, and foreshortening. The whole development of Greek drawing over the next century depends on this switch of tool.

White-ground applies a white clay slip as a ground and paints on it, often in outline with added colours after firing. Those colours are fugitive, so the surviving pieces are pale ghosts of what was made. It is used above all for the oil flasks placed in graves in fifth century Athens, which is a reminder that technique often tracks function.

Why this matters: Red-figure is not simply black-figure inverted; it substitutes a brush for a graver, which is what makes anatomical modelling and foreshortening possible.

Shape and function, and why the images follow

Read down that table and the central methodological point emerges on its own. The symposium is over-represented in the surviving imagery because the vessels made for the symposium are decorated and survive. Women appear in domestic interiors partly because the shapes associated with women's possessions and rituals carry that imagery. The distribution of subjects across the corpus is, to a large degree, a distribution of vessel functions.

The point: Vase imagery is matched to the object's use, so counting subjects across the surviving corpus measures which vessels were decorated rather than which activities were common.

The customer was often Etruscan

The second filter is the export market, and there is direct evidence for it.

The Athenian potter Nikosthenes produced amphorae with flat, ribbon-like vertical handles and a distinctive profile that has no ancestry in Athenian shapes at all. It copies an Etruscan form made in the local black ceramic called bucchero. Almost every surviving example was found in Etruria, and most of those at a single site, Cerveteri. In other words, an Athenian workshop identified a foreign market, copied a shape that market already liked, and shipped the results to it.

Once you have that case, you have to ask the question generally. If shapes could be made for the Etruscan market, could subjects be? Some scholars argue that certain themes popular in Etruscan tombs were selected or emphasised for export; others reply that the same subjects circulate in Athens too and that the vases were general stock rather than commissions. What is not disputable is that a substantial part of the finest Athenian figured pottery was made for people who did not live in Athens, and that its survival depends on Etruscan funerary practice.

Add a third consideration about status. Painted pottery was cheap. Commercial graffiti scratched on the undersides of vases record prices that are modest, and the wealthiest households at a drinking party used vessels of silver and bronze, which were later melted down. So the imagery of elite leisure that dominates Athenian pottery is painted on the affordable version of the equipment. Whether it reflects how its buyers lived, or how they would have liked to, is a real question rather than a rhetorical one.

Remember: Nikosthenic amphorae copy an Etruscan shape and were found almost entirely in Etruria, which proves that Athenian workshops made for foreign buyers and forces the question of how far imagery followed the market.

Where the images fail as documents, and where they succeed

Suppose you wanted to write a social history of Athens from its vases. Four problems would defeat you.

Convention is not observation. Male nudity in Greek art is a convention that marks heroism, athletic context, or ideal status. Warriors fight naked on vases and did not fight naked. Scale can indicate importance rather than size. Attributes identify figures. None of that is reportage.

Myth and life share a visual language. Without an inscription, a scene of a man leaving home with a spear while a woman pours a libation may be a departing hoplite or a named hero. Painters used one repertoire of poses for both, so the same image can be filed as daily life or myth depending on the cataloguer.

Whole categories are missing. The population of classical Attica was largely agricultural, and farming barely appears. Enslaved people are present constantly but are marked, if at all, by small size, cropped hair, or subordinate position, which makes counting them a matter of interpretation.

The viewpoint is narrow. The vases were painted by men, in workshops, for a symposium culture that was male, and mostly for buyers who were not poor. That does not make the images false. It makes them a position rather than a window.

Now the other side, because vases are superb evidence for several things.

They record objects that have not survived: klinai and tables, lyres and auloi and their cases, sandals, mirrors, chests, and the way cloth actually fell. They record technique. A red-figure cup of about 490 BCE, now in Berlin, shows a bronze foundry in operation, with a furnace being worked by a bellows, a statue being assembled from separately cast parts, and finished pieces hanging on the wall. That single object is a primary source for the process described in Lesson 5, and there is no written equivalent. They record the practice of the symposium in extraordinary detail, from the mixing ratios implied by the vessels to the games played. And in aggregate, plotted on a map, their findspots record the reach of Athenian trade decade by decade.

The upshot: Vases are weak evidence for how often things happened and strong evidence for how things were made, what objects looked like, and what stories and social scripts were in circulation.

A worked case: women in the images

Take a common subject and run the whole method on it. Athenian vases show women repeatedly in a small number of settings: working wool, standing at a loom, gathered around a chest, fetching water at a fountain house, and visiting tombs.

The naive reading takes these as a documentary record of a secluded female life. The evidence does support part of it. Loom weights, the clay or stone weights that tension the warp threads on an upright loom, are among the commonest finds in excavated Athenian houses, so textile production in the home is independently confirmed. Ritual roles at funerals are corroborated by grave markers and by law.

But three cautions apply at once. The fountain-house scenes, which show groups of women outside the house talking while their jars fill, sit awkwardly with the strongest versions of the seclusion argument, and scholars read them variously as evidence that seclusion has been overstated, as depictions of enslaved or poorer women who did fetch water, or as an idealising male fantasy of an activity that was in fact contested. The interiors are painted on shapes owned by women but made and sold by men. And the scenes are strikingly consistent, which is what you would expect from a repertoire of standard compositions rather than from observation.

The productive conclusion is a method rather than an answer. Use the images to generate specific questions, then test them against excavated houses, loom weights, inscriptions, and skeletal evidence. Where several independent classes of evidence converge, you have a finding. Where only the vases say it, you have an Athenian painter's convention, which is itself worth knowing about but is not the same thing.

Bottom line: Treat vase imagery as a hypothesis generator to be checked against excavated material, not as a photographic record, and say which class of evidence each claim actually rests on.

Common misconceptions

  • Red-figure is simply black-figure reversed. The important change is from graver to brush, which is what makes modelling, dilute washes, and foreshortening possible.
  • Greek vases show us Greek daily life. They show subjects matched to vessel functions, made for a market that was partly Etruscan, in a repertoire of conventions.
  • Painted pottery was luxury tableware. It was affordable; the wealthiest used silver and bronze, which were later melted down.
  • Nudity on vases records how Greeks dressed for battle or work. Heroic nudity is a convention of representation, not a report of practice.
  • The survival of so many Athenian vases means Athens was full of them. Complete vases survive largely because Etruscans buried them, so the sample is shaped by another society's funerary customs.

Module 4: Athens, the Hellenistic World, and Italy Before Rome

The Acropolis as a building programme, a sculptural argument, and a two thousand year afterlife including the dispute over its marbles; then the emotional and technical range of Hellenistic art; then the Etruscans, whose tombs supplied both the Greek vases and much of what Rome inherited.

Athens and the Acropolis, and the Argument About the Marbles

26 September 1687

A Venetian army under Francesco Morosini was besieging Ottoman-held Athens. The Ottoman garrison had stored gunpowder inside the Parthenon, reasonably enough, since it was the strongest roofed building on the citadel. On the evening of 26 September a mortar shell fired from the Hill of the Muses came through the roof, and the magazine went up. The explosion destroyed the roof, blew out the long walls of the cella, brought down columns on both flanks, and scattered sculpture across the rock. Roughly three hundred people are said to have died.

The building had stood, largely intact, for more than two thousand one hundred years. When Morosini then tried to lower the horses of Athena's chariot from the west pediment as a trophy, his tackle failed and they smashed on the ground. Everything discussed later in this lesson, including the dispute about where the sculptures should be, takes place in the aftermath of that evening.

Key idea: The Parthenon is a ruin because of a specific dated military accident in 1687, not because of slow decay, and its condition at every later moment has to be dated against that event.

The Periclean programme

When the Persians burned the Acropolis in 480 BCE, the Athenians did not immediately rebuild. For three decades the ruins stood, and the broken dedications went into the fills discussed in Lesson 2. From 447 BCE, under the political leadership of Pericles, a systematic programme replaced them. The money came substantially from the treasury of the alliance Athens led, which had been moved from Delos to Athens in 454 BCE, and the use of allied funds for Athenian temples was controversial at the time. Two of these repay a second look. The Erechtheion is deliberately asymmetrical, because it had to accommodate several older sacred spots on uneven ground, including the mark said to have been left by Poseidon's trident and the olive tree of Athena. Its south porch is carried on six draped female figures, the Caryatids. And the parapet that later ran around the Nike bastion carried relief figures of Victories, one of whom bends to adjust her sandal, in drapery so thin and so wet-looking that the technique is conventionally called the wet look.

Why this matters: The Acropolis is not one building but a coordinated programme carried out within about forty years, largely financed from the resources of an alliance Athens controlled.

Three sculptural programmes, and a puzzle

The Parthenon carried sculpture in three separate systems, each in a different place and a different technique.

The metopes, ninety-two of them, sit in the Doric frieze above the outer colonnade, in high relief. Each side carried a battle: Lapiths against centaurs on the south, gods against giants on the east, Greeks against Amazons on the west, and the Trojan War on the north. All four are conflicts between order and its opponents, which is a legible theme without needing to be spelled out.

The pediments, the triangular gables, held free-standing figures carved fully in the round. The east showed the birth of Athena from the head of Zeus; the west, the contest between Athena and Poseidon for the land of Attica.

The frieze is the strange one. It is a continuous Ionic band, about 160 metres long, running around the outside of the cella wall, carrying roughly 378 human and divine figures and more than two hundred animals. The standard interpretation is that it shows the Panathenaic procession, the civic festival in which a new robe was carried to Athena. That reading has been challenged. John Boardman proposed that the cavalcade of horsemen represents the Athenians who died at Marathon, shown among the gods. Joan Breton Connelly argued that the central scene over the east door depicts a scene of myth, the sacrifice of a daughter of Erechtheus, rather than the handing over of the robe. Neither has displaced the standard view, and both have forced it to be argued rather than assumed.

Now the puzzle. The frieze is placed high on the cella wall, behind the outer colonnade, in a shadowed space where a viewer standing outside can see it only in fragments at an acute angle. Enormous care and expense went into carving something nearly impossible to see properly. Explanations range from the practical, that it was better lit than modern reconstructions suggest, to the theological, that the audience that mattered was the goddess rather than the public.

Inside stood the reason for the whole building: Pheidias's Athena Parthenos, some eleven metres tall, built of gold plates and ivory over a wooden core. It is entirely lost. It is known from small Roman copies, from coins, and from descriptions, and Thucydides records that the gold, forty talents of it, was made removable so that it could serve as a reserve of bullion. The greatest work of art in classical Athens was also the city's emergency savings account.

The point: The Parthenon's three sculptural programmes served different viewing conditions, and the frieze in particular was carved to a standard its visibility does not explain.

Two thousand years of reuse

It is easy to think of the Parthenon as a classical building that became a ruin. It was a functioning structure for most of its life, and continuously in use.

In late antiquity it was converted to a Christian church, dedicated to the Virgin, with an apse cut into the east end and the entrance moved to the west, which required altering the east pediment. After the Ottoman conquest of Athens in the fifteenth century it became a mosque, with a minaret built inside the cella. Then the powder magazine, then 1687.

Two lessons follow. First, damage to the sculpture is cumulative and comes from several eras: Christian iconoclasm defaced metopes, the church conversion cut through the east pediment, and the explosion did the rest. Second, the building's later phases are themselves archaeology. A restoration that strips a monument back to one chosen period is making a choice about which centuries count, and the choice made on the Acropolis in the nineteenth century, to remove the medieval and Ottoman structures entirely, is one that few heritage bodies would make in the same way today.

Remember: The Parthenon spent most of its existence as a church and then a mosque, and the decision to strip those phases away was an interpretive act, not a neutral cleaning.

The removals, and then the argument

Thomas Bruce, seventh Earl of Elgin, was British ambassador to the Ottoman court from 1799. Between 1801 and 1812 his agents removed roughly half of the surviving Parthenon sculptures, along with a Caryatid from the Erechtheion, a column capital, and material from other buildings, and shipped them to Britain. He acted under a document obtained from Ottoman authorities in Constantinople, a firman whose original does not survive and which is known through an Italian translation whose scope is disputed. Facing debt, Elgin sold the collection to the British government in 1816, after a parliamentary select committee examined the acquisition, and it passed to the British Museum, where it has been ever since. Greece has sought the sculptures since regaining independence, with the modern campaign intensifying from the 1980s.

Now the two cases, each stated as its own advocates state it.

For return. These are architectural elements, not free-standing artworks. The frieze is a single continuous composition and it is currently sawn in two, with roughly half in London and half in Athens, so no one can see the work whole anywhere on earth. Consent is the second issue: the permission, whatever its scope, came from an occupying imperial power, and no Athenian was asked. The old objection that Greece could not house or protect them no longer holds, since the Acropolis Museum opened in 2009 with a top-floor gallery laid out to the exact dimensions and orientation of the Parthenon, in sight of the building, with the missing pieces represented by blanks so that the absence is visible to every visitor. And the sculptures carry a meaning in Greece that no other object substitutes for, which the Greek state has pressed continuously for four decades.

For retention. The British Museum's position is that the acquisition was lawful under the law in force at the time and that its trustees cannot simply give objects away: the British Museum Act of 1963 restricts deaccessioning, so a transfer would require Parliament. It argues that the sculptures in London are seen free of charge by millions of visitors in a collection spanning the world's cultures, which is a distinct kind of educational value that a single-site museum cannot provide, and that they have been accessible in a stable public collection for two centuries. It has also argued that the pieces removed were spared the worst of the atmospheric pollution that damaged what remained on the building through the twentieth century. And there is a structural argument about precedent: a return on these grounds would be difficult to confine to this case.

What each side has to concede. The retention argument's stewardship claim is weakened by a documented episode: in the 1930s the sculptures in London were cleaned with copper tools and abrasives in an attempt to make them whiter, removing original surface, and the museum has acknowledged the damage. The return argument has to reckon with the fact that the sculptures left in place suffered severely from pollution until they were moved indoors, and that the Ottoman-era permission, whatever its limits, was the only legal authority then operating in Athens.

Where it stands: discussions between the museum and Greek officials about long-term loan or partnership arrangements have been reported repeatedly in recent years without resolution, and UNESCO's intergovernmental committee on the return of cultural property has recommended a bilateral solution more than once. Note the distinction those proposals depend on. Ownership is a legal question, stewardship a practical one, and justice a moral one; most workable proposals separate them rather than requiring one answer to settle all three.

The upshot: The dispute is not a simple contest between law and morality, because each side has a documented weakness, and the serious proposals work by separating ownership from custody and display.

What conservation looks like now

A final piece of the story, because it shows that damage did not stop in 1687. Between 1898 and 1933 the Greek engineer Nikolaos Balanos carried out major restorations, re-erecting fallen columns and reassembling blocks. He fixed them with iron clamps, set into the marble without protection against corrosion. Iron rusts, rust occupies more volume than the metal it replaces, and over decades the clamps expanded and split the marble from the inside.

Since 1975 the Acropolis Restoration Service has been undoing that work. The method is to dismantle, remove the corroded iron, replace it with titanium, which does not corrode and has a thermal expansion close to that of marble, fill losses with new Pentelic marble cut from the ancient quarries and left visually distinguishable, and re-erect. Original sculpture has been moved to the museum and replaced on the buildings by casts. The project has run for half a century, which is itself the lesson: conservation of a monument like this is not a task that finishes.

Bottom line: Well-intentioned restoration with iron clamps in the early twentieth century caused serious structural damage, and the ongoing programme of dismantling, retitaniuming, and re-erecting is the correction.

Common misconceptions

  • The Parthenon fell into ruin gradually. It was substantially intact until a gunpowder explosion on 26 September 1687.
  • The Parthenon was always a temple. It served as a Christian church for centuries and then as a mosque, and those phases were physically removed by nineteenth century restorers.
  • The frieze certainly depicts the Panathenaic procession. That is the standard reading, seriously challenged by proposals involving the Marathon dead and the daughters of Erechtheus, and it is now defended rather than assumed.
  • Greece has nowhere suitable to display the sculptures. The Acropolis Museum opened in 2009 with a gallery matching the temple's dimensions and orientation and blanks marking the absent pieces.
  • The British Museum could return the sculptures if it chose. The Act of 1963 restricts deaccessioning, so a permanent transfer would require parliamentary action, which is why loan arrangements are what gets discussed.

Looking back

  • The 1687 explosion, not slow decay, produced the ruin, and Morosini's attempt to remove pediment figures destroyed them.
  • The Periclean programme built the Parthenon, Propylaia, Athena Nike temple, and Erechtheion within about forty years, financed substantially from allied funds moved to Athens in 454 BCE.
  • The Parthenon carried ninety-two metopes, two pediments, and a 160 metre Ionic frieze whose subject remains argued and whose visibility was always poor.
  • The Athena Parthenos was chryselephantine, about eleven metres tall, and its forty talents of gold were removable as a financial reserve.

Hellenistic Art: Kings, Pathos, and the Expanded Subject

A giant hauled up by the hair, spilling onto the stairs

On the Great Altar built at Pergamon in western Asia Minor around 170 BCE, a frieze about 113 metres long and over two metres high runs around the outside of the podium, showing the gods fighting the giants. On the east side Athena has seized the winged giant Alkyoneus by the hair and is pulling him off the ground, because he can be killed only when he loses contact with the earth. Below, his mother Ge, the Earth herself, rises waist-deep out of the ground with her face turned up and her mouth open.

The carving is so deep that arms and legs detach entirely from the background, and where the frieze meets the great west staircase the giants' knees and hands come over the edge and rest on the steps that visitors were climbing. The figures are named in inscriptions cut on the cornice above, and the sculptors signed below. Carl Humann excavated the altar from 1878 and the reconstructed monument is in Berlin.

Compare that with the Parthenon frieze from the last lesson, set high in shadow, restrained, and legible only to a viewer who already knows the festival. In under three centuries Greek monumental sculpture has changed its relationship to its audience completely.

Key idea: Hellenistic art breaks the plane between image and viewer, pursues emotional impact, and addresses a public that is meant to be affected rather than instructed.

What Hellenistic means, and who was paying

The period runs conventionally from the death of Alexander in 323 BCE to the Roman annexation of Egypt after 30 BCE. Alexander's generals divided his conquests into kingdoms: Ptolemaic Egypt with its capital at Alexandria, the Seleucid realm across Asia, Antigonid Macedon, and, later, the Attalid kingdom centred on Pergamon.

The change in patronage matters more than any stylistic label. Classical Greek monumental art was largely commissioned by city-states and sanctuaries. Hellenistic art was largely commissioned by kings, courts, and very wealthy individuals, in capitals rather than in city-state sanctuaries, and it competed for prestige between dynasties. Kings needed portraits, victory monuments, palaces, libraries, and gardens; they had far more money than any classical polis; and they were commemorating themselves rather than a community.

The geography expands accordingly. Alexandria, Antioch, Pergamon, and Rhodes become production centres, and Greek-style art is made and consumed from Afghanistan to Sicily. HIST 210 sets out the political history; what concerns us is that the audience, the money, and the map all changed at once.

Why this matters: The shift from civic to royal patronage explains most of what changes in the art, because a king commissioning a victory monument wants a different effect from a city dedicating a temple.

The expansion of subject matter is the change students notice first. The Roman versions of Hellenistic types include an old woman carrying chickens and vegetables to market, her back bent and her face lined; a boy struggling with a goose; a satyr sprawled asleep with his legs apart, in the marble known as the Barberini Faun. Nothing in fifth century sculpture prepares you for any of them.

It would be wrong to describe the period as uniformly emotional, though. A strong classicising current runs alongside the theatrical one, producing calm, balanced figures that deliberately recall fifth century models. The Aphrodite found on the island of Melos in 1820, and now in the Louvre, is a work of about 130 to 100 BCE that quotes classical forms in an unmistakably later idiom. Hellenistic art contains both tendencies at once, and pretending it has a single style flattens it.

The point: The period is defined by an expanded range rather than by one manner, running from extreme theatricality to deliberate classicising revival, often in the same decades.

The Attalid Gauls, and what a victory monument does

The Attalid kings of Pergamon won a series of victories over the Galatians, Celtic-speaking peoples who had settled in Asia Minor, and commemorated them with dedications of bronze figures. Those bronzes are lost, and we know the group through Roman marble versions.

The best known shows a wounded Gaul sitting on his shield, one arm braced against the ground, head down, blood running from a wound in his side. He is identified as a Gaul by his hair, worked into thick lime-stiffened locks, his neck torque, and his moustache. Another group shows a Gaul who has already killed his wife driving a sword into his own throat rather than be captured.

These are remarkable images because the defeated enemy is given physical dignity, courage, and grief. It is worth being clear about why. This is a monument erected by the winners, and the nobility of the enemy is the measure of the victory: the greater the opponent, the greater the king who beat him. The sympathy is real and it is also an argument for Attalid power. Both readings are correct at once, and holding them together is more useful than choosing.

Remember: The dignified defeated enemy is a standard device of victory monuments, and reading it only as compassion misses that the compassion is doing political work.

The Laocoon, and the arm

On 14 January 1506 workmen digging in a vineyard on the Esquiline hill in Rome uncovered a marble group of a bearded man and two youths entangled with two enormous snakes. Michelangelo was among those who came to see it. Pope Julius II bought it, and it went into the Vatican, where it remains.

Pliny the Elder had described a Laocoon in the palace of the emperor Titus, made by three sculptors of Rhodes whom he names as Hagesandros, Polydoros, and Athanodoros, and the identification was made immediately. The subject is the Trojan priest and his sons destroyed by serpents. Its date is genuinely unsettled: some specialists take it as a Hellenistic original of the second century BCE, others as a first century BCE or CE work made for a Roman patron in a Hellenistic manner, and the sculptors' names appear on a signed group from Sperlonga of the early imperial period, which complicates matters further.

The restoration history is the part worth learning. The group was found with the father's right arm missing. In the sixteenth century it was completed with an arm flung dramatically upward and outward, and that is the version that influenced European art for four hundred years, including Baroque sculpture and the aesthetics that Winckelmann and Lessing argued about. In 1905 the archaeologist Ludwig Pollak found a marble arm in a Roman builder's yard and recognised that it might belong. It was bent sharply back over the head. Decades later it was tested against the group, fitted, and the Baroque arm was removed.

So the most influential ancient sculpture in the western tradition was influential in a pose its sculptors did not give it. That is a general lesson about museum objects, and it applies to hundreds of restored statues in older collections: an eighteenth century restorer's guess, once installed, becomes what everyone knows.

The upshot: The Laocoon shaped European art for four centuries in a restored pose that turned out to be wrong, which is a warning about how much of any old collection is modern.

Cities, mosaics, and the missing capital

Away from monumental sculpture, three developments matter.

Urban planning. Hellenistic foundations use regular grids on difficult terrain, with the street plan imposed rather than accommodated. Priene in Asia Minor is the textbook case: a grid laid across a steep slope, with stepped streets, a theatre, an agora, and standardised house plots. The city as a designed object is a Hellenistic idea that Rome inherited.

Mosaics. Late fourth century floors at Pella in Macedonia are made of natural coloured pebbles set on edge, with lead strips outlining figures; one, showing a stag hunt, is signed by a maker named Gnosis. By the second century the technique has moved to cut stone cubes, which allow far finer gradation. The most spectacular survival is the Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun at Pompeii, made around 100 BCE from over a million tiny tesserae, almost certainly reproducing a Hellenistic painting: Alexander charges from the left, the Persian king turns in his chariot, and a fallen Persian sees his own face in a dropped shield. Since Greek panel painting is entirely lost, mosaics like this are the closest thing we have to it.

The archaeological gap. Alexandria was probably the largest and richest city of the Hellenistic world, with the Museum, the Library, and the lighthouse. It is also one of the worst known archaeologically, because the ancient centre lies under a dense modern city and the royal quarter subsided into the harbour. Underwater survey since the 1990s has recovered statuary and architectural blocks from the seabed, but the imbalance stands: our picture of Hellenistic art is drawn disproportionately from Pergamon, Rhodes, and Roman Italy because those are what can be dug.

What matters here: Our sense of the period is shaped by excavation accidents, since the richest Hellenistic capital is under water and under a modern city while a secondary kingdom's altar is fully reconstructed in Berlin.

The decadence charge

One last thing to carry away. Winckelmann's developmental scheme, from Lesson 1, had four phases, and the last was decline. On that model, fifth century Athens was the summit, and everything after it was a falling away into excess, sentimentality, and technical display without substance. That judgment was standard in museums and textbooks well into the twentieth century, and it shaped what was collected, what was displayed prominently, and what was left in storerooms.

It does not survive examination. The technical range of Hellenistic sculpture exceeds anything earlier: undercutting, torsion, textural contrast between flesh and cloth and hair, figures conceived for movement around them. The expansion of subject matter to children, the old, and the poor is an enlargement of what art can do rather than a loss of dignity. And the classicising strand shows the period in full command of earlier styles and choosing when to use them. What Winckelmann described as decline is better described as a different set of aims pursued with great skill, and the persistence of his verdict is a good example of how a periodisation invented in 1764 can still be shaping what a visitor sees today.

Bottom line: The characterisation of Hellenistic art as decadent is an inherited eighteenth century judgment, not a finding, and it has had measurable effects on what museums display.

Common misconceptions

  • Hellenistic art is emotional and classical art is calm. The period contains a strong classicising current alongside the theatrical one, sometimes in the same city and decade.
  • The Dying Gaul expresses sympathy for the defeated. It does, and it is a victory monument in which the enemy's nobility magnifies the victor. Both are true simultaneously.
  • The Laocoon has always looked as it does now. Its right arm was restored outstretched in the sixteenth century, and the correct bent arm was identified in 1905 and only fitted decades later.
  • Hellenistic art is later than and therefore inferior to classical art. That is Winckelmann's four-phase scheme, an eighteenth century value judgment that shaped museum display for two centuries.
  • Our picture of the period is balanced. Alexandria, its greatest centre, is largely under water and under a modern city, while Pergamon is reconstructed in a Berlin museum.

The short version

Etruscan Italy: Tombs, Terracotta, and What Rome Inherited

A married couple on a couch, in fired clay

In the Villa Giulia in Rome there is a terracotta sarcophagus about 1.9 metres long, made at Cerveteri around 520 to 510 BCE. On its lid a man and a woman recline together on a banqueting couch. He is behind her, one arm across her shoulder. Both have the long almond eyes and the slight upturned mouth of archaic sculpture, both have plaited hair, and both have their hands posed as if holding small objects that have not survived. It was made in several pieces, because nothing that size could be fired whole, and it was assembled over a chest that held cremated remains.

Almost everything characteristic of Etruscan material culture is in that object. It is terracotta rather than marble, in a peninsula that had marble. It is life-size and it is funerary. It shows a woman at the banquet, reclining, in the same posture and at the same scale as the man. And it is painted, or was.

The woman at the banquet is the detail Greek observers seized on. Theopompus of Chios, writing in the fourth century BCE in a passage that survives because Athenaeus quoted it, described Etruscan women dining and drinking with men, and meant it as an indictment of a decadent people. Read as evidence it yields two different things: a weak claim about Etruscan morals, and a strong one about Etruscan practice, since a hostile Greek and a proud Etruscan monument agree on the underlying fact. What neither settles is whether that reflects political rights, or the display habits of a small landowning class burying its own.

Key idea: A hostile source and a celebratory monument can agree about a practice while disagreeing about its meaning, and the agreement is the part you can use.

Who they were, and the origins argument

The Etruscans were the peoples of Etruria, the region between the Arno and the Tiber that is now Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio. They were never a state. They were a set of independent cities, conventionally a league of twelve, including Cerveteri, Tarquinia, Vulci, Veii, Chiusi, Volterra, Populonia, Orvieto, and Perugia, and the cities went to war with each other and made separate treaties with Rome. Their period of greatest reach, into the Po valley and into Campania, runs from about the eighth to the fifth century BCE.

They wrote in an alphabet adapted from a Greek one, learned from Greek settlers in the Bay of Naples, and Latin then took its alphabet from theirs. Roughly thirteen thousand Etruscan inscriptions are known. Anyone can read them aloud, because the script is Greek-derived and the sound values are secure. Understanding them is the hard part, because Etruscan is not an Indo-European language and has no living relative, so vocabulary has to be recovered from context. Funerary formulae, numbers, kinship terms, and magistracies are well understood. Extended prose is not. The longest text is the Liber Linteus, a linen book that survives because an Egyptian mummy was wrapped in it and the wrappings ended up in Zagreb. The most useful single find is the set of three inscribed gold tablets excavated in 1964 at Pyrgi, the port sanctuary of Cerveteri: two in Etruscan and one in Phoenician, recording a dedication by a ruler named Thefarie Velianas around 500 BCE, and giving scholars a partial bilingual.

On where they came from, two ancient answers were in circulation. Herodotus reported a migration from Lydia in Asia Minor. Dionysius of Halicarnassus argued that they were indigenous to Italy. A study of ancient genomes from Etruscan and neighbouring sites, published in 2021, found the Etruscan samples close to their Latin-speaking neighbours and without the eastern signature that a Lydian migration would predict. Language and genes are different things and neither settles culture on its own, but the archaeological picture, in which Villanovan Iron Age communities in the same places develop into Etruscan cities without a break, points the same way.

The point: Etruscan can be read but only partly understood, and the migration story from Herodotus is not supported by the archaeology or by the ancient DNA published in 2021.

The record is mostly cemeteries

Here is the structural problem, and it is the same survival problem you met in Lesson 1 in a different costume. Etruscan cities sit under living towns: Tarquinia, Perugia, Orvieto, and Volterra were never abandoned. Their houses were built substantially of timber and mudbrick on stone footings, which leaves little. Their cemeteries, by contrast, were cut into soft volcanic rock outside the walls, were monumental, were furnished with goods, and were not built over.

So the Etruscans are known through their dead, and the distortion is severe. The Banditaccia necropolis at Cerveteri, listed by UNESCO in 2004 together with Tarquinia's Monterozzi, is laid out like a city: streets of circular tumuli, each cut down into the tufa and roofed with a mound, with chambers inside that reproduce the interiors of houses. Beams, rafters, doorframes, and beds are carved out of the living rock. The Tomb of the Reliefs at Cerveteri, of about the third century BCE, has stucco reliefs of household objects hung on its pillars: ladles, jugs, a gaming board, rope, an axe. It is the closest thing we have to an inventory of an Etruscan house, and it is in a grave.

Two consequences follow. First, when a textbook says Etruscans loved luxury, check whether the evidence is anything other than grave goods, since burials are a display medium and are not a household census. Second, the emphasis on tombs made Etruria the most heavily looted landscape in Europe. In the 1820s and 1830s, Lucien Bonaparte opened thousands of graves on his estate at Vulci for the vases, which is one reason so many Athenian pots in European museums have no recorded context at all, a point Lesson 7 depends on.

Worth holding on to: Nearly everything we call Etruscan art comes from tombs, so the record documents how a wealthy minority chose to be buried rather than how anybody lived.

Tarquinia, and the largest body of painting before Rome

About two hundred of the roughly six thousand tombs known at Tarquinia are painted, and that small fraction is the largest body of pre-Roman painting in Italy and one of the largest anywhere in the ancient Mediterranean. Since Greek panel painting is entirely lost, as Lesson 9 noted, these walls carry a disproportionate share of what can be said about ancient painting at all.

The best known are of the late sixth and early fifth centuries. The Tomb of Hunting and Fishing has a wall of open sea with divers, boats, and birds, and no framing architecture at all. The Tomb of the Leopards, of about 470 BCE, has a banquet on the rear wall with reclining couples, musicians with pipes and lyre on the side walls, and two leopards facing each other in the gable.

What the scenes mean is genuinely disputed. One reading takes them as pictures of the funeral itself, the banquet and the games held for the dead. Another takes them as an image of the afterlife the dead person expects. A third takes them as an assertion of status, a portrait of the life the family led and wished to keep on record. The scenes change over time in a way that supports the seriousness of the question: from the fourth century the mood darkens and demons appear, notably the blue-skinned Charun with his hammer, so the repertoire was not fixed.

The way many of these tombs were found is itself worth knowing. From the 1950s the Lerici Foundation, working with the engineer Carlo Maurilio Lerici, surveyed the necropolis with soil resistivity, drilled a narrow borehole into any anomaly, lowered a periscope camera, and photographed the interior before deciding whether to excavate. Thousands of tombs were assessed that way and a few dozen painted ones were found. It is one of the earliest large-scale uses of geophysics and remote sensing in Mediterranean archaeology, and it exists because tomb robbers were working the same ground faster.

Why this matters: Two hundred painted chambers at Tarquinia carry much of the surviving evidence for ancient painting, and they were found by a survey method built to outrun looters.

Temples made of wood and clay

You will not find an Etruscan temple standing, and the reason is structural. Vitruvius describes the type, which he calls Tuscan, and excavation confirms his account in outline. The building sits on a high stone or mudbrick podium, is approached by steps at the front only, and faces one way, unlike the Greek temple you met in Lesson 6 which can be walked around and read from any side. The front half is a deep porch with widely spaced columns; the back half is often divided into three rooms. The columns and the entire superstructure were wood, so the intercolumniations could be wide, and the exposed wood was protected and decorated with fired clay: revetment plaques, antefixes at the ends of the roof tiles, and figures on the ridge.

Take away the wood and the clay and you are left with a podium, which is exactly what survives. The Portonaccio sanctuary at Veii is the key site, because its roof sculpture survives: a group of over life-size terracotta figures of about 510 to 500 BCE, of which the striding Apollo, now in the Villa Giulia, is the famous one. He moves forward with his weight forward and his drapery pressed against his legs, and the whole figure was designed to be read against the sky from below, standing on the ridge beam. Pliny the Elder records that a sculptor named Vulca of Veii was called to Rome to make the cult statue of Jupiter for the Capitoline temple. That is the single most specific link between Etruscan workshops and Roman monumental religion, and it comes from a Roman source writing centuries later, which is worth remembering when weighing it.

In short: Etruscan temples are missing because their columns and roofs were timber, and what survives is the stone podium plus the terracotta that clad and crowned the wood.

Bronze, gold, and a wolf that is probably not Etruscan

Etruscan metalwork was traded across the Mediterranean and was the basis of the region's wealth. Three things are worth naming. Bucchero, the black burnished fine ware of the seventh and sixth centuries, fired in a reducing atmosphere so that the body is black throughout, was the everyday luxury pottery and was exported widely. Gold granulation, the fusing of minute gold spheres onto a surface, reached a level in the seventh century that later goldsmiths could not reproduce; the large fibula from the Regolini-Galassi tomb at Cerveteri, opened in 1836 and now in the Vatican, is the display piece. And large bronze casting was an Etruscan specialism: the Chimera of Arezzo, found in 1553 and now in Florence, carries an inscription reading tinscvil, marking it as a dedication to the god Tinia.

Which brings up the Capitoline Wolf, the bronze she-wolf in Rome that appears in every book about Etruscan art published before about 2010. It was long dated to the fifth century BCE and called Etruscan; the suckling twins are a Renaissance addition, made in the fifteenth century. Technical study of the casting method, together with radiocarbon and thermoluminescence results reported in 2006 and 2008, indicated that the wolf was cast in a single pour by a technique characteristic of the medieval period, and pointed to a date around the eleventh or twelfth century CE. Not everyone accepts the conclusion and the argument continues. Treat it the way Lesson 2 treated the Getty kouros: a famous object whose date rests on evidence that can be re-examined, and a warning that a label repeated for two centuries is not the same as a finding.

Bottom line: The most reproduced image of Etruscan art may not be Etruscan at all, and the case against it rests on casting technique plus laboratory dating rather than on style.

What Rome actually took

Rome's debt to Etruria is real and it is routinely overstated. The table sorts the standard claims by how good the evidence is.

Rome did not invent the arch and neither did Etruria; true voussoir arches were built in the Near East long before either. But Etruscan cities were building monumental stone gate arches by the third and second centuries BCE, and the Porta all'Arco at Volterra and the gate at Perugia now called the Arch of Augustus are standing examples. Lesson 11 takes up what Rome then did with the form, which is the more interesting question.

The upshot: The strongest Etruscan legacies at Rome are the temple type, the divinatory system, and the alphabet, while the popular claim about gladiatorial combat is the weakest.

How Etruria ended, and one painted argument about it

Veii, the Etruscan city closest to Rome, fell in 396 BCE after a long siege. The rest followed over the next century and a half through war and treaty, and by the first century CE the language was dying. The emperor Claudius, who married an Etruscan noblewoman, wrote a history of the Etruscans in twenty books and compiled a dictionary of the language. Both are lost, which tells you how much of this subject is a study of gaps.

But Claudius left something else. In 48 CE he argued in the senate for admitting Gauls to that body, and the speech was inscribed on a bronze tablet found at Lyon in 1528. In it he refers to an Etruscan tradition that the Roman king Servius Tullius was in fact an Etruscan adventurer named Mastarna.

Now the painting. In 1857 Alessandro Francois excavated a large painted tomb at Vulci, of about the fourth century BCE. One wall shows a sequence of armed men killing other armed men, with every figure labelled in Etruscan. A man named Macstrna frees a bound prisoner, Caile Vipinas. Beside them, named victims are being killed, and one of them is Cneve Tarchunies Rumach, which is Etruscan for Gnaeus Tarquinius of Rome.

So an Etruscan tomb painting and a Roman emperor's bronze speech, four hundred years and one language apart, preserve the same body of tradition about a struggle among warlords in central Italy, and the painting gives the Etruscan side of it, with the man from Rome on the losing end. It is the clearest surviving case in this course of a monument written by the people the Roman narrative left out, which is exactly what the rest of the course is trying to recover.

What matters here: The Francois Tomb preserves an Etruscan version of early Roman history, independently echoed by Claudius in 48 CE, and it survives as a painting rather than a text.

Common misconceptions

  • The Etruscan language is undeciphered. The script is fully readable; the language is only partly understood, which is a different and much narrower problem.
  • The Etruscans came from Lydia. That is Herodotus. The archaeology shows continuous local development, and ancient DNA published in 2021 found no eastern signature.
  • The Capitoline Wolf is a masterpiece of Etruscan bronze casting. Casting analysis and laboratory dating point to a medieval date, and the twins are fifteenth century.
  • Etruscan art is provincial Greek art. It imports Greek models heavily and then uses them for different purposes, in different materials, on buildings shaped by different rules.
  • Etruscan women were emancipated. The evidence shows women named in their own right in inscriptions and present at banquets in monuments and hostile Greek accounts alike, which is about status and display, not about political rights.

Module 5: The Roman Material World

What Rome built once concrete let it enclose space, whose faces it carved and why they changed with the politics, and the painted rooms of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which survive because a volcano buried them and are still the best evidence we have for ancient painting.

Roman Architecture and the Concrete Revolution

  • Explain what opus caementicium is, how it was actually built, and why it changed what Roman architects could enclose.
  • Date a Roman wall approximately from its facing type, and explain why brick stamps give closer dates than style does.
  • Analyse the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and a bath building as solutions to specific structural and social problems.

An inscription that names the wrong man

Across the porch of the Pantheon in Rome, in bronze letters set into the frieze, runs the line M AGRIPPA L F COS TERTIVM FECIT: Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, consul for the third time, made this. Agrippa was Augustus's general and son-in-law, and he did build a Pantheon on that spot, in about 27 to 25 BCE. It burned in 80 CE. Domitian rebuilt it. It burned again, struck by lightning, in 110 CE.

The building you can walk into today was put up under Hadrian, roughly 118 to 128 CE. We know this not from the inscription, which says the opposite, and not from a text, but from the bricks. Roman brickmakers stamped their product with the names of the estate, the workshop, and often the consuls of the year, and the stamps in the Pantheon's walls are Hadrianic. Somebody in the 120s CE re-erected an Augustan dedication on a new building, which is either modesty or a claim of continuity, and it fooled scholars until the stamps were systematically studied in the nineteenth century.

Two things follow, and both run through this lesson. First, Roman buildings can be dated closely by their fabric, and the fabric is often more honest than the inscription. Second, the Pantheon is the standing proof of what this lesson is about: a single unreinforced concrete dome 43.3 metres across, still the largest of its kind anywhere, nearly nineteen centuries old, with a hole about nine metres wide open to the weather at its crown.

Key idea: The Pantheon's inscription names Agrippa, its bricks name Hadrian's reign, and the bricks win.

What Roman concrete actually is, and what it is not

Opus caementicium has three ingredients. Lime, made by burning limestone. A reactive volcanic ash, the best of it from the Bay of Naples around Puteoli, which Roman writers call pulvis puteolanus and which modern engineers call pozzolana. And caementa: lumps of broken stone, brick, or tile, from fist to head sized, which act as aggregate.

Now correct the picture most people carry. Roman concrete was not poured. It has no steel reinforcement, so it is strong in compression and weak in tension, which is why every Roman span is an arch or a vault and never a beam. It was built in horizontal courses: a layer of mortar was spread, the caementa were laid into it by hand, and the next layer went on top, between two faces of stone or brick that stayed in place as part of the finished wall. There were no removable shuttering forms for walls, though vaults were turned over timber centering that was struck once the mortar had set.

Why it lasts is a live research question with recent answers. Cores drilled from Roman harbour installations and analysed in a study published in 2017 showed rare minerals, aluminous tobermorite and phillipsite, growing inside the concrete where seawater had percolated through it: the material was not merely resisting the sea but reacting with it and becoming more interlocked over centuries. A separate line of work, published in 2023, argued that the small white lumps of lime visible in many Roman mortars, long dismissed as sloppy mixing, are the residue of mixing at high temperature, and that they let cracks reseal when water reaches them. Neither finding means Roman concrete outperforms modern structural concrete, which is far stronger per unit volume and can be reinforced to carry tension. It means the Roman mixture was extraordinarily durable in the specific conditions it was used in, and that its survival rate is not an accident.

Why this matters: Roman concrete was laid in courses between permanent facings, carries no reinforcement, and therefore dictates an architecture of arches, vaults and domes rather than beams and slabs.

Reading a wall, and dating it

Because the core is rubble, the visible face was built of something regular, and the style of that face changed over time in a sequence tight enough to date a wall to within a few decades. This is typology, exactly as in Lesson 2, applied to masonry.

The bricks then do better than the sequence can. From the late first century CE many bricks carry a stamp giving the estate, the workshop, and in the second century often the consuls of the year, which converts a relative sequence into a calendar date, and does it for the courses of a wall rather than for a whole building. That is the tool that redated the Pantheon. It has the usual weakness of any dating method attached to a manufactured object: bricks could be stockpiled or reused, so a stamp gives a date after which the wall was built, not the day it went up.

The upshot: Facing type dates a Roman wall to within decades, and a stamped brick can date it to a year, subject to the reuse problem.

The arch, and what happens when you rotate it

An arch is a curved line of wedge-shaped blocks, the voussoirs, standing over a temporary timber frame until the last one, the keystone, is dropped in. Every block is then in compression, and the arch pushes outward as well as downward at its feet, so it needs mass or another arch to lean against.

Three moves generate almost all Roman monumental interiors. Extend an arch along an axis and you have a barrel vault, a tunnel. Cross two barrel vaults at right angles and you have a groin vault, which concentrates all the load onto four corner piers and leaves the four sides open, so the space can be lit and extended in any direction. Rotate an arch about its vertical axis and you have a dome.

What concrete adds is that these become one continuous object rather than an assembly of cut blocks. A concrete vault has no joints to slip, can be turned in complex shapes, and can be built by a large workforce of semi-skilled labourers over timber centering rather than by stonemasons cutting every voussoir to fit. That is a change in economics as much as in engineering, and it explains why the technology spread so fast once it worked.

An early demonstration is the sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia at Praeneste, modern Palestrina, of the late second century BCE. Ramps, terraces and hemicycles in concrete reshape an entire hillside into a single ascending composition. For centuries a medieval town sat on top of it and hid it; the town was bombed in 1944, and the ancient sanctuary underneath became visible.

In short: Barrel vault, groin vault and dome are the same arch used three ways, and concrete turns each of them into a single monolithic shell.

The Colosseum as a machine for moving people

The Flavian Amphitheatre was begun under Vespasian around 72 CE and dedicated by Titus in 80. Vespasian put it on the site of the artificial lake in Nero's Golden House, which was a deliberate political statement: the ground a hated emperor had taken for a private pleasure park was handed back as a public building.

Its interest is less the facade than the circulation. Estimates of capacity cluster around fifty thousand. Eighty arched openings ring the ground level, and the surviving Roman numerals carved over them show that the arches were numbered so that a ticket could send a spectator to a specific entrance, stair and wedge of seating. Behind the facade is a system of annular corridors and radial stairs in concrete and tufa vaulting, which lets tens of thousands enter and leave without meeting. Seating was allocated by rank, senators at the front on marble.

The outer wall is travertine, cut and stacked without mortar and held with iron clamps. Those clamps were dug out for their metal in the medieval period, and the pockmarks over the whole surface are the holes left behind. Under the arena floor, Domitian added the hypogeum, two levels of passages, animal cages and lift shafts.

What matters here: The Colosseum is best read as a circulation problem solved in concrete and travertine, with numbered entrances and rank-sorted seating, not as a facade with orders applied.

Baths, aqueducts, and the buildings people actually used

The imperial bath is where concrete vaulting reaches its most confident public use. The Baths of Caracalla, built between about 212 and 216 CE, cover a walled precinct of roughly three hundred metres on a side and contain a cold hall roofed by three groin vaults, a warm hall, a domed hot room, pools, exercise courts, libraries and gardens. The floors are carried on brick pillars with hot air from furnaces circulating beneath, the hypocaust, and hollow wall tiles carry the heat up the walls. When McKim, Mead and White designed Pennsylvania Station in New York in 1910, they modelled its main space on the cold hall of these baths; the station was demolished in 1963, so the Roman building outlived its own copy.

None of it works without water. Rome's first aqueduct, the Aqua Appia, was built in 312 BCE, and by the end of the first century CE Frontinus, appointed water commissioner under Nerva, could write a treatise describing nine of them, including the capacities of the pipes and the methods by which people tapped the supply illegally. Aqueducts ran mostly underground; the arcades we photograph are the exceptional stretches where a valley had to be crossed. The most famous, the Pont du Gard, carried the channel of the Nimes aqueduct across the Gardon on three tiers of arches about forty nine metres high, and the channel falls only a few centimetres across the bridge's whole length. That gradient, held over roughly fifty kilometres of terrain, is the actual achievement; the arches are just the visible part of it.

The point: Roman engineering's hardest problem was not spanning the valley but holding a gradient of a few centimetres per hundred metres for fifty kilometres.

What changed, stated as a comparison

Go back to Lesson 6, and the Greek temple. It is a sculptural object. Its refinements are meant to be read from outside, its interior is a dark room housing a statue, and no one gathered inside it. The Parthenon's power is the power of a body seen in the round.

The Roman buildings in this lesson invert that. The Pantheon's exterior is an awkward assembly of a Greek porch stuck onto a drum, and the drum was hemmed in by other structures in antiquity so that most of it could not be seen at all. Everything is spent on the interior: a hemisphere whose diameter equals its height above the floor, so that a sphere of 43.3 metres would exactly fit inside, coffered to cut weight, with an aggregate that changes as the dome rises, heavy travertine low down and light pumice near the top, and an oculus that is both a structural relief and the only light source. You are meant to stand in the middle of it. That is the change: architecture as enclosed volume rather than as object.

Say plainly what carried over. Romans kept the Greek orders, and used them as applied decoration on arcuated structures, engaged half-columns framing arches that are doing the real work, as on the Colosseum's tiers. Both traditions are present in the same wall, one structural and one representational.

Remember: Greek architecture perfects an object seen from outside; Roman architecture, once concrete makes vaulting cheap, is about the space you stand inside, with the orders retained as surface.

Common misconceptions

  • The Romans invented the arch. True voussoir arches were built in the Near East long before Rome, and Etruscan cities were building monumental gate arches; the Roman contribution is systematic exploitation, especially in concrete.
  • Roman concrete was poured into wooden forms like modern concrete. It was laid in courses by hand between permanent stone or brick facings, with timber centering only for vaults.
  • Roman concrete is stronger than modern concrete. It is much weaker per unit volume and carries no reinforcement. It is remarkably durable, which is a different property.
  • Agrippa built the Pantheon we see. His building burned; the standing structure is Hadrianic on the evidence of its brick stamps, with the older inscription reinstated.
  • Aqueducts were mostly arcades across the countryside. Most of the length ran in covered channels at or below ground; arcades were for valleys.

Roman Portraiture: Wrinkles, Types, and Recut Heads

  • Date an imperial portrait approximately from hair, drill work and eye treatment, and explain how heads were identified and sometimes recut.

A marble Augustus in a villa cellar, April 1863

Excavators working at the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, north of Rome, found a marble statue of Augustus just over two metres tall, now in the Vatican. Work through it element by element, because nothing on it is casual.

He stands with his weight on his right leg and the left trailing, the arrangement you met in Lesson 5 in Polykleitos's Doryphoros, made four and a half centuries earlier. He wears a cuirass, and on it, in the middle of the chest, a bearded Parthian hands a Roman military standard to a Roman figure. That refers to a specific event: the standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BCE were recovered by negotiation in 20 BCE, and Augustus advertised it as a conquest. Beside his right leg a small Cupid rides a dolphin, which both props the marble and asserts descent from Venus, ancestress of the Julian family. His feet are bare, which in Greek and Roman sculpture marks a hero or a god, not a man walking on a road. And the surface, which now reads as white, carried paint: reconstructions based on pigment traces show a coloured cuirass and a red cloak.

One more thing, and it is the one people miss. Augustus died in 14 CE at the age of seventy five. No portrait of him shows an old man. He is perhaps in his thirties in every version, from the Actium years to the end.

Key idea: The Prima Porta statue is an argument in marble, quoting a classical Greek pose, dating itself by a diplomatic event of 20 BCE, and refusing to let its subject age.

Before Augustus: the face that wanted to look old

Now run the film backwards, and the change is startling. Late Republican portraits of Roman men look like this: deep creases from nose to mouth, sagging jowls, a corded neck, a receding hairline, a bony skull, sometimes warts. The style is called verism, from verus, true. In one well known statue in the Capitoline collections a man in a toga carries a portrait bust in each hand, holding his ancestors as objects.

Two explanations compete, and the disagreement is worth working through because it is a model of how style arguments are actually settled or not.

The Roman-practice explanation. Polybius, a Greek writing in the second century BCE, describes the funeral of a Roman noble: masks of the ancestors, kept in cupboards in the atrium, are worn by men of matching build who ride in the procession wearing the appropriate magistrate's dress, so the dead man is escorted by his line. Those masks, the imagines, were the property of families that had held high office. On this account, verism is what happens when a society that displays its dead ancestors in wax starts commissioning them in stone, and the old face is the point, because age carried authority in a senate run by senior men.

The Hellenistic-import explanation. Individualised, unflattering portraits of specific men were being carved in the Greek east well before Rome adopted them, notably at Delos, where a mixed community of Greek and Italian merchants commissioned portraits in the second and first centuries BCE. Roman patrons employed Greek sculptors. On this account verism is a Hellenistic mode that Roman clients selected because it suited their politics, and it arrives with the sculptors.

What would settle it is a securely dated series of Italian veristic portraits earlier than the Hellenistic ones, and we do not have that. The imagines themselves are the crux, and no wax mask survives, so the practice is known only from texts. Most specialists now hold both halves at once: the taste is Roman and the carving tradition is Greek. The important part for you is that verism is a style, not a photograph. The same hooked nose and the same jowls recur across different men, and a face built to say sober, experienced, and old is doing the same work as a face built to say young and godlike.

So what?: Verism is a claim about character and standing, executed by Greek-trained carvers for Roman patrons, and it is no more a neutral record of a face than the ageless Augustus is.

How one face got everywhere

Roughly two hundred and fifty portraits of Augustus survive, from Spain to Syria, and they are not two hundred and fifty independent likenesses. They fall into a small number of types, distinguished by the exact arrangement of the locks of hair over the forehead: in the Prima Porta type, one pair of locks divides above the inner corner of the right eye and another forks to the left, and once you can see that scheme you can sort portraits by it.

The mechanism was a master model, approved in Rome, from which plaster casts were taken and sent out; local workshops then copied the cast in local stone, using measuring points. That is why a portrait from a provincial forum matches one from the capital in the details of the fringe while differing in quality and marble. A new type could be issued to mark an occasion, and the old ones stayed in place, which is why several types circulate at once.

Set this next to coins, which Lesson 14 takes up as evidence in their own right. Between the two media, an emperor's face reached everyone who handled money or walked through a public square, in a version he controlled. It is the largest scale image programme in the ancient world, and it worked without any of the technologies we normally credit for that.

The upshot: Imperial portraits are copies of approved models distributed as casts, so their uniformity is administrative rather than accidental.

Dating a head

Because portraits copy the ruling family, and because private citizens copied the ruling family in turn, hair and technique give a usable dating sequence. Women's coiffures are especially good: a distinctive imperial hairstyle appears on a coin, and any private portrait wearing it is unlikely to be much earlier.

Read the last two rows carefully, because the standard story calls them decline. That is Winckelmann's scheme again, met in Lesson 9. The evidence against it is that the same period produces technically demanding work, that the abstraction is consistent rather than incompetent, and that it does something specific: a tetrarch is not an individual but one of four interchangeable holders of an office, which is exactly what the porphyry group now attached to the corner of San Marco in Venice shows, four identical armoured men embracing in pairs. When the aim changes from likeness to legibility of rank, the style follows.

What matters here: Hair, drill work and eye treatment date a Roman portrait to within a generation, and the late abstraction is a change of aim rather than a loss of skill.

Faces that were altered after the fact

A Roman portrait was not a fixed object. When a ruler was condemned after death, in what modern scholars call damnatio memoriae, his images could be destroyed, defaced, or economically converted: a marble head could be recut into his successor, since a new fringe and a slimmer jaw are cheaper than a new statue. Heads of Nero and of Domitian were reworked in this way, and the recutting can often be detected, because the recut head sits on proportions designed for another face and the surface plane has dropped.

The most direct evidence survives in paint. A circular wooden panel now in Berlin, painted around 200 CE and found in Egypt, shows Septimius Severus with his wife Julia Domna and their two sons. One of the sons has had his face scraped away. Caracalla had his brother Geta killed in 211 and his name and image struck out across the empire, and here you can see the erasure carried out on a household object by hand.

The same habit operates at monumental scale. The Arch of Constantine, dedicated in 315 CE, is built substantially from sculpture cut off earlier monuments of Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius, with the imperial heads recut to show Constantine. Lesson 15 returns to that arch for what it says about late antiquity; here, note only that reuse of this kind is not a decline in resources but a way of annexing the authority of good emperors.

Remember: Roman portraits were routinely defaced or recarved for political reasons, and the alterations are themselves evidence, most visibly on the Severan panel where Geta's face was scraped off.

Everyone else

Emperors are overrepresented in museums, so it is worth saying who else had themselves portrayed. Freed slaves did, in large numbers. Along the roads out of Rome and other Italian towns stood tomb monuments with rectangular framed panels holding half-length portraits of two, three or four people, usually a couple and their relatives, carved in the veristic manner and dressed in the toga or the matron's dress. The toga is the point: it is the garment of a Roman citizen, and manumission conferred citizenship. These reliefs are the self-representation of people who had been property, using the visual language of the class that had owned them.

Women's portraits repay attention for the same reason as coiffures. A private woman wearing the elaborate Flavian curl mass is making a claim about being current, and she gives the archaeologist a date. And children appear in Roman portraiture in ways Greek art rarely allows, especially on the sarcophagi of the second and third centuries.

The point: Roman portraiture is not only imperial: freedmen's tomb reliefs use the same veristic style and the citizen's toga to assert a status they had recently acquired.

How anyone knows whose face it is

One question is worth ending on because it exposes the whole method. How do we know that a head labelled Hadrian is Hadrian?

The chain starts with coins, which carry a portrait on one side and a legend naming the person around it. That gives a securely identified profile, dated by the titles in the legend. Sculpture is then matched to the coin profile, and to other sculpture, through the hair-lock scheme described above. Where the match is close and the type is well attested, the identification is solid. Where it is not, the honest label is what museums often use: portrait of a man, with a date range and nothing more.

The circularity risk is real. If a head is identified as Hadrian because it is bearded, and then used as evidence that Hadrianic portraits are bearded, nothing has been learned. This is why coins, with their names attached, do so much work in Roman art history, and why an unprovenanced head with no findspot, no inscription and no coin parallel is a much weaker object than its price suggests.

Bottom line: Coin legends anchor the identification of imperial portraits, and a head without that anchor is usually an attribution rather than a fact.

Common misconceptions

  • Veristic portraits are objective likenesses. They are a style asserting age, sobriety and authority, with recurring conventional features across different men.
  • Roman portraits are just copies of Greek work. Portraiture is the area where Roman practice diverges most sharply; the Greek contribution is carving tradition, not the genre's purpose.
  • An imperial portrait is a unique work. Most are copies of an approved model distributed as plaster casts, which is why the fringe matches across the empire.
  • Late Roman portraits show a loss of skill. The same workshops handle porphyry and colossal marble; the abstraction is aimed at rank and office rather than likeness.
  • Museum labels naming emperors are certain. Identification depends on matching coin portraits, and many heads are attributions that have hardened into labels.

What you now know

  • The Prima Porta Augustus quotes the Doryphoros, refers to the standards recovered in 20 BCE, claims Venus as an ancestor, and never ages.
  • Republican verism is explained both by the wax ancestor masks Polybius describes and by Hellenistic realistic portraiture; the two explanations are usually combined.

Wall Painting at Pompeii and Herculaneum

  • Explain how the two burial processes at Pompeii and Herculaneum differ and what each preserves that the other does not.

A red room outside the walls, opened in 1909

In 1909 and 1910, excavation of a large suburban house just outside the Herculaneum Gate at Pompeii uncovered a room whose three walls carry about thirty life-size figures on a ground of saturated red. They stand on a narrow painted ledge, behind a row of painted pilasters, at the level of a person standing in the room. A woman is whipped. A satyr plays pipes. A kneeling figure unveils an object in a basket. A winged female raises an arm.

The house is now called the Villa of the Mysteries, and the frieze was painted around 60 to 50 BCE. What it shows is not agreed. The most common reading is an initiation into the cult of Dionysus; others read a bride's preparation for marriage, or a combination of the two, and no ancient text describes the ritual in a way that settles it. What is not in doubt is the design decision. The figures are not framed pictures on a wall. They are staged at your own scale, on your side of the architecture, so that walking into the room puts you among them.

Hold that in mind, because it is the argument of this lesson. Roman wall painting is not decoration applied to a room. It is the room, redesigned.

Key idea: The Villa of the Mysteries frieze puts life-size figures at the viewer's eye level and on the viewer's side of the painted architecture, which is a spatial decision before it is a subject.

Two burials, two archives

Everything in this lesson survives because of an eruption that we cannot securely date to a day. Pliny the Younger, who watched it from Misenum as a teenager and lost his uncle to it, wrote two letters to Tacitus about a quarter of a century later describing the column of ash and his uncle's death at Stabiae. The manuscripts of those letters give a date that has been read as 24 August 79 CE. Against that stand a charcoal inscription found at Pompeii in 2018 carrying a date in the second half of October, together with autumn fruit, braziers, and heavier clothing found in the deposits. Most specialists now favour the autumn date and treat the August reading as a copying error. It is a good reminder that even the best-documented event in classical archaeology is dated by evidence that can be re-examined.

The two cities were buried by different processes, and that difference produced two different archives.

The Herculaneum column deserves an extra sentence. Because organic material carbonised rather than rotting, the tunnellers of the 1750s found in one villa a library of about eighteen hundred rolls of papyrus, blackened and fused. They are mostly Greek philosophy, much of it by the Epicurean writer Philodemus. For two and a half centuries they were unreadable, and attempts to unroll them physically destroyed a number of them. Then the problem was attacked with X-ray tomography and machine learning: in 2023 individual letters were recovered from an unopened scroll, and in February 2024 a prize was awarded for reading over two thousand characters of continuous text from one. That is the single most important thing happening in classical archaeology right now, and it is happening to objects excavated in the eighteenth century.

Why this matters: Pompeii preserves a town plan and painted walls; Herculaneum preserves wood, food and papyrus, so the two sites answer different questions and neither substitutes for the other.

How a Roman wall was actually made

Vitruvius describes the preparation in detail, and excavated walls confirm the essentials. The wall gets a rough coat, then successive layers of lime and sand, then finer layers in which the sand is replaced by crushed marble. Vitruvius specifies as many as seven coats in a good job; excavated sections often show three to five. Each layer is applied over the one below while it is still damp and is beaten to compact it.

The painting goes onto the final layers while the lime is still wet, so that as the plaster carbonates the pigment is locked into the surface rather than sitting on it. Some detail, especially fine figure work and certain pigments that lime attacks, was added afterwards onto the dry surface. The finished wall was then polished, and a well made Pompeian wall has a slight sheen, closer to marble than to matte paint.

The palette is limited and it is legible if you know what you are looking at. Red and yellow ochres and green earth are cheap and local. Carbon black comes from soot. Egyptian blue, the oldest known manufactured pigment, is a copper calcium silicate that has to be fired, and it is the only strong blue available. Cinnabar gives a brilliant expensive red, and Pliny the Elder records that its price was regulated.

Now a detail that matters when you look at photographs. The eruption's heat converted yellow ochre into red on many exposed walls, chemically, in place. Some of the famous Pompeian red was Pompeian yellow until the morning of the eruption. It is a small thing that trains a large habit: the object you are looking at has been through events since it was made, and the surface is evidence of those events too.

The core of it: Painting into wet lime over multiple compacted coats, then polishing, is what gives Roman walls their durability and sheen, and eruption heat has altered some of the colours you now see.

Mau's four styles, and what they are good for

In 1882 the German scholar August Mau published a classification of Pompeian wall painting into four styles. It is still the working framework, and it is a typology in exactly the sense of Lesson 2: a sequence built from observed change, useful for dating, with the usual traps.

Three cautions. The scheme is built from Campanian houses, so it describes a region, not the empire. The styles overlap at their boundaries and a conservative patron could commission an old-fashioned scheme years after the fashion moved. And rooms were repainted, so a house can hold three styles at once, which is a dating opportunity rather than a problem as long as you date the wall and not the building.

The upshot: The four styles date a wall within a couple of decades in Campania, provided you remember that they date the plaster rather than the house.

The house as a designed sequence

Roman houses of the Pompeian type are organised on an axis. From the street you enter a corridor, then the atrium with its opening to the sky and its basin below, then the tablinum, the room where the owner received people, and often through it to a colonnaded garden beyond. Stand at the front door and you can see the whole depth of the house.

The painting is arranged for that. Rooms that mattered got the elaborate schemes; service corridors got plain colour. Small dark bedrooms were opened out with painted architecture. Garden rooms were painted with gardens: the best surviving example is not at Pompeii but from Livia's villa at Prima Porta, now in the Palazzo Massimo in Rome, where a windowless underground room is painted on all four walls with a fruiting orchard full of identifiable birds, behind a low fence, with no architecture at all between you and it. The effect is to abolish the wall.

The framed mythological panels do a different job. They are quotations, and knowing the story was the point: a dining room with paintings of Perseus, or of Theseus abandoning Ariadne, gives guests something to recognise and discuss. Repetition of the same compositions in different houses shows that workshops carried model books rather than inventing each scene.

The point: Painting follows the social plan of the house, opening the rooms that receive visitors and leaving the working parts plain.

What these rooms do not tell you

Lesson 7 asked what vase painting can be used for. Ask the same of wall painting, because the temptation is stronger here: these are rooms in real houses, so surely they show real life.

Consider two famous images. A tondo from Pompeii shows a young woman holding a stylus to her lips with a set of wax tablets, and for two centuries it has been reproduced as a portrait of the poet Sappho. It is neither Sappho nor, in any strict sense, a portrait: it is an idealised type of a cultivated young woman, of a kind that recurs. Another panel, showing a man holding a scroll and a woman with stylus and tablets, is universally captioned as the baker Terentius Neo and his wife. The identification comes from an election notice painted near the house, and it is a plausible modern guess rather than a caption the Romans supplied.

Then the larger correction. Pompeii is not a Roman town frozen mid-morning. It is a specific Campanian town, wealthier than average, in the middle of repairs from the severe earthquake of 62 CE, with houses that were building sites when the ash arrived. Much of what was painted on its walls left long ago: eighteenth and nineteenth century excavators cut the best panels out and took them to Naples, where they now hang framed, and the rooms they came from are blank. That is the same context loss described in Lesson 1, committed by archaeologists rather than by looters.

Remember: Painted rooms document what patrons wanted to display in a rich Campanian town in the 70s CE, and many of the best panels were cut out of their walls two centuries ago.

Losing it a second time

Giuseppe Fiorelli took charge of Pompeii in 1863 and did two things that still structure the site. He imposed the numbering system of region, block and doorway that every publication now uses, and he developed the technique of pouring plaster into the voids left in the hardened ash where bodies had decayed, producing casts of people and animals in the positions in which they died.

Preservation is the current crisis. A painted wall that has been sealed for nineteen centuries begins to deteriorate the moment it is uncovered: salts migrate, colours fade, rain and roots do the rest. In November 2010 the building known as the House of the Gladiators collapsed, which produced enough public anger to fund the Great Pompeii Project from 2012, a large programme of consolidation, drainage and roofing. About a third of the site remains unexcavated, and the settled policy is now to leave it buried, because the safest place for an undug Roman house is underground. Lesson 1's argument about context has a sequel here: excavation is itself a destructive act, and the modern discipline excavates less on purpose.

Worth holding on to: Roughly a third of Pompeii is deliberately left unexcavated, because uncovering a painted room starts a clock that conservation can slow but not stop.

Common misconceptions

  • Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79 CE. That reading of Pliny's letters is contradicted by a charcoal date found in 2018 and by autumn material in the deposits; an October eruption is now the majority view.
  • Pompeii and Herculaneum preserve the same things. Herculaneum's hotter, deeper burial carbonised wood, food and papyrus and saved upper floors; Pompeii's did not.
  • Pompeii is an ordinary Roman town frozen in a moment. It is a wealthy Campanian town under repair after the earthquake of 62 CE, and much of its painting was removed to Naples long ago.
  • The woman with the stylus is a portrait of Sappho. She is an idealised type of an educated young woman, and the label is a modern habit.
  • Roman red walls were always red. Eruption heat converted yellow ochre to red on many exposed surfaces.

Putting it together

Module 6: Ordinary Lives and Afterlives

The people the literary sources ignore, reached through apartment blocks, bars, rubbish, graffiti, epitaphs and coins; then the provinces and late antiquity, and the unresolved modern questions about looting, collecting, and who should hold the classical past.

Ostia, the Insula, and the Evidence Ordinary People Left

  • Contrast the domus with the insula and explain why Ostia, rather than Pompeii, is the type site for Roman urban housing.
  • Use graffiti, epitaphs, amphorae and coins as classes of mass evidence, and state the specific bias each one carries.
  • Explain the epigraphic habit and the debasement of the denarius as cases where material evidence answers questions texts cannot.

A joke about a wall, written on a wall

Somebody at Pompeii scratched a couplet into the plaster: I am amazed, wall, that you have not collapsed in ruin, holding up the tedious scribblings of so many writers. The line is recorded on more than one wall in the town, which improves the joke considerably, because it means people read it and copied it somewhere else.

Nobody knows who wrote it. He or she has no name, no biography, no place in any literary tradition, and no elite patron. The couplet exists because writing on walls was normal, plaster is soft, and a volcano sealed the surface in 79 CE.

That is the subject of this lesson: the classes of evidence that survive in bulk, were produced without anyone intending to inform posterity, and belong to people the literary record leaves out. Roman literature was written by and largely for a tiny class. Housing, rubbish, wall writing, tombstones and small change were not.

Key idea: The best evidence for ordinary Roman lives is evidence nobody meant as evidence: where people slept, what they threw away, what they scratched on walls, and what they carried in their purses.

Where a million people actually lived

Start with the arithmetic, because it disposes of a common picture. The population of the city of Rome under the early empire is usually estimated at around a million, and the estimate is argued over. What is not in serious doubt is the ratio in the fourth century regionary catalogues, which list roughly forty six thousand units called insulae against about eighteen hundred domus. Specialists dispute what exactly the catalogues counted, whether a whole block or a single apartment. The ratio survives every version of the dispute.

So the elegant courtyard house of Lesson 13, with its atrium, its axis and its painted reception rooms, was the housing of a very small minority. The normal Roman urban experience was the insula: a multi-storey block, shops on the street front, apartments above, reached by stairs that often opened directly onto the street so the upper floors could be let separately.

Living there had specific consequences that the archaeology and the law both record. Piped water reached ground level at best, so water was carried up from a street fountain. There was rarely a kitchen, which is why the ground floors of Roman towns are full of bars with masonry counters and sunken jars: eating out was not a luxury but an infrastructure. Fire and collapse were routine enough that Augustus limited building height to seventy Roman feet and Trajan cut it to sixty. The upper floors were the cheap ones, being furthest from the water and nearest to the fire, which inverts the modern penthouse.

Why this matters: Roman housing was overwhelmingly rented apartments above shops, and the famous atrium house is the exception that museums and textbooks have made look like the rule.

Ostia, and why it is the test case

Pompeii cannot show you this, because Pompeii is a modest-sized town whose upper storeys were crushed by pumice. Ostia can. Rome's port at the Tiber mouth, about twenty five kilometres from the capital, was rebuilt in brick-faced concrete in the second century CE, declined slowly as the harbour silted and trade moved, and was never built over. Its apartment blocks still stand two and three storeys high.

Walk through what survives. The block known as the Insula of Diana, of the mid-second century, has shops below, a bar, a courtyard with a cistern, a latrine, and flats above reached by stairs. The Garden Houses are a planned development of the Hadrianic period: matched blocks set in open green space, built as a single speculation. The Horrea Epagathiana is a warehouse with a fine brick doorway, named from the inscription of the two freedmen who built it. In the square behind the theatre, the Piazzale delle Corporazioni, small rooms open off a portico and each has a black and white mosaic in front of it naming a place and a trade, with shipping firms from Carthage, Narbonne and Alexandria among them, and an elephant marking the office from Sabratha in North Africa. There are some eighteen mithraea in the excavated area, and a synagogue found in 1961 during road works, one of the oldest known in Europe. In the Baths of the Seven Sages, painted Greek philosophers dispense crude advice about the lavatory, which is worth remembering the next time you read about Roman gravitas.

Now the caveat, and it is a serious one. Most of what you can see was cleared between 1938 and 1942, under Guido Calza, at enormous speed, for a world exposition that Mussolini planned for 1942 and the war cancelled. The excavation was directed at exposing the imperial-period town. Later levels were removed with far less recording than modern practice requires, and roughly two thirds of the site has been dug at all. Ostia is the best evidence we have for Roman urban housing, and it was produced by a project whose priorities were partly political.

The point: Ostia preserves standing apartment blocks because the town died quietly, and the excavation that revealed them was fast, political, and thin on the later centuries it removed.

What people ate, recovered from a drain

Between 2005 and 2007 a team working at Herculaneum emptied a large sewer running under an insula on one of the town's streets. It had never been cleared out. Above it were flats and shops, and their kitchens and latrines discharged into it.

The excavation produced hundreds of sacks of compacted organic waste, which is not the sort of find that goes on a museum poster and is worth more than most that do. Sorted and analysed, it gives a menu for a block of ordinary residents: fish in quantity, including small species eaten whole, sea urchin, shellfish, chicken and eggs, figs, olives, cereals, nuts and spices, along with the coins, beads and bits of jewellery that fall down drains in any century. Set that beside Roman satire, which portrays the urban poor eating little but grain, and the archaeology contradicts the literature in a specific and checkable way.

The same principle scales up. On the edge of Rome there is an artificial hill, Monte Testaccio, about thirty five metres high, made entirely of broken pottery: the discarded amphorae from the state-supervised import of olive oil, on the order of fifty three million vessels, overwhelmingly of the fat globular type produced in southern Spain. Many carry painted notations giving the weight of the empty jar, the weight of the oil, the name of the merchant, and often a consular date. A rubbish tip is thus a serial dataset on the volume, origin and organisation of a food supply across two centuries, and it exists because oil amphorae absorbed the product and could not be reused.

The core of it: Roman rubbish is quantitative evidence, and a sewer at Herculaneum and a hill of broken oil jars at Rome both answer questions no surviving text addresses.

Writing on walls

The fourth volume of the great corpus of Latin inscriptions is devoted to the wall writing of Pompeii and its neighbours, and it holds more than eleven thousand items. They come in two families. Painted notices, done by professional signwriters, mostly urge votes for candidates in municipal elections or advertise games and rentals. Scratched graffiti are everything else: greetings, insults, love and its opposite, prices, tallies, gladiator results, arithmetic, alphabets practised letter by letter, and quotations from Virgil and Ovid, sometimes accurate and sometimes not.

Two conclusions are safe. Writing was a normal part of the visual environment, not an elite preserve; and a functional literacy was widespread enough that scratching a line on a wall in a side street was worth doing, because someone would read it. Graffiti also appear inside houses, on freshly painted walls, which tells you something about how precious those decorated surfaces actually were to the people living among them.

Then the limits, which are equally important. The writers skew male, urban and at least semi-literate, so the illiterate rural majority is still invisible. Individual graffiti are almost impossible to date except by the destruction level above them. And a wall inscription tells you what someone chose to write in public, which is not the same as what they thought.

Remember: Pompeian graffiti prove that writing was ordinary and public, and they still exclude the illiterate, the rural and the enslaved who had no wall of their own.

Epitaphs, and a habit that came and went

Latin inscriptions on stone number in the hundreds of thousands, gathered since 1863 in the corpus begun under Theodor Mommsen, and the majority are funerary. They are the largest single body of evidence for people who wrote no literature.

They are also skewed in a way that is worth stating exactly. Freed slaves are heavily overrepresented, because a freedman had a reason to buy stone: an epitaph announces that the person under it died a Roman citizen with a family and a trade. The most spectacular example stands at the Porta Maggiore in Rome, the tomb of Marcus Vergilius Eurysaces, built in the later first century BCE, covered with rows of large circular openings and crowned by a frieze showing the stages of commercial bread production. Its inscription identifies him as a baker and a contractor. A man who had almost certainly been a slave built himself a monument in the middle of the capital, in a form nobody else used, advertising the trade that paid for it.

Now a caution about counting. If you plot dated Latin inscriptions by year, the total rises through the first and second centuries CE, peaks around 200, and then falls sharply. Read naively that says the empire's population collapsed in the third century. What it actually measures is a fashion, which scholars call the epigraphic habit: a period in which people of middling status chose to record themselves on stone, followed by a period in which they did not. Ages given on tombstones carry a related trap, since they cluster on multiples of five, so the stones cannot support the demographic arithmetic people sometimes attempt with them.

The upshot: Inscriptions are the voice of the middling and the freed, and their rise and fall tracks a cultural habit rather than the population that produced them.

Coins, which were issued by the state and used by everyone

A Roman coin was struck, not cast: a blank was placed between two engraved dies and hit. The obverse normally carries a head and a legend naming him with his titles, and the reverse carries a type, an image with a slogan. That combination makes coins the most widely distributed messaging system in the ancient world, and it makes them extraordinarily useful in three ways.

They date deposits. A coin in a layer gives the date after which that layer formed, as Lesson 2 set out, and coins are common, small and constantly lost.

They carry explicit politics. After the assassination of Julius Caesar, Brutus issued a denarius with his own head on one side and, on the other, two daggers flanking the cap worn by a freed slave, above the words for the Ides of March. It is an admission of murder minted as a claim of liberation, and it is about as unambiguous as ancient political messaging gets.

And they record economic history physically. Analyse the silver content of the denarius over three centuries and you get a curve: close to fully fine under Augustus, distinctly reduced by the later second century, roughly half by the Severan period, and by the 270s a coin of base metal with a thin silver wash on the surface. Nobody had to write that down for us to know it. It is measurable in the metal, and it is the sort of question where material evidence beats every literary account.

The limit is the obvious one and it is often forgotten. A coin type tells you what the mint wanted said. It does not tell you that anyone believed it, any more than the slogan on a banknote proves public confidence.

What matters here: Coins date layers, broadcast the state's claims, and record debasement in their own metal, but they are the government's voice rather than the public's.

Common misconceptions

  • Most Romans lived in houses like those at Pompeii. The regionary catalogues put apartment blocks against elite houses at roughly twenty five to one, and Ostia shows what those blocks were like.
  • Graffiti were vandalism by the poor. Wall writing was normal and public, appears inside decorated houses, and was produced by people literate enough to quote poetry.
  • Inscription counts track population. They track the epigraphic habit, which peaks around 200 CE and then collapses for cultural reasons.
  • Coins tell us what Romans believed. They tell us what the mint asserted, which is a claim about propaganda, not about opinion.
  • Ostia is a fully documented site. Most of what is visible was cleared at speed between 1938 and 1942 for a cancelled exposition, with later levels removed under thin recording.

What to carry forward

  • Roman cities were made of insulae: shops below, rented flats above, no piped water upstairs, no kitchen, and a legal height limit of seventy then sixty Roman feet.
  • Ostia preserves standing apartment blocks, warehouses, bars, mithraea and a synagogue, and it was excavated fast under Mussolini for an exposition that never happened.
  • A sewer at Herculaneum yielded hundreds of sacks of food waste from ordinary flats, contradicting the literary picture of a grain-only urban diet.
  • Monte Testaccio is a hill of roughly fifty three million discarded oil amphorae, many carrying painted weights, merchants and consular dates.
  • More than eleven thousand painted and scratched inscriptions survive from Pompeii, showing that writing in public was ordinary.
  • Funerary inscriptions overrepresent freedmen, and the tomb of Eurysaces the baker is the extreme case of a freedman advertising his trade.

Provinces, Late Antiquity, and Who Holds the Classical Past

  • Explain the stylistic change visible on the Arch of Constantine and assess the decline reading against the alternative.
  • State the strongest arguments on each side of the antiquities and restitution debate, and apply them to a specific case.

A birthday invitation from the edge of the empire

In 1973 excavators at Vindolanda, a fort in northern Britain just south of where Hadrian's Wall would run, pulled thin slivers of wood out of waterlogged deposits. They were writing tablets, and the ink was still legible. Among the hundreds since recovered is a note from Claudia Severa, wife of the commander of a neighbouring fort, to Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of the prefect at Vindolanda, written around 100 CE. Severa invites her to a birthday celebration, calls her sister, and says she will make the day more enjoyable by her presence. The bulk of the letter is in a professional hand; the closing greeting is in a second, less practised hand, which is generally taken to be Severa's own.

Two women at the northern edge of the empire, exchanging invitations in Latin, on wood, in a fort in a province conquered sixty years earlier. It is one of the earliest surviving pieces of writing in Latin by a woman, and it survives because the ground at Vindolanda is wet and airless.

Start the last lesson there deliberately. Most of the Roman world was not Rome. Most people who lived under Roman rule never saw the Pantheon, and what they made and used is where this course ends before it turns to who owns it now.

Key idea: The classical world is overwhelmingly a provincial world, and its most human documents survive by accidents of soil chemistry rather than by anyone's intention.

Four provinces, four kinds of evidence

Take four regions and notice that no two produce the same sort of material.

Britain. At Bath the hot spring was enclosed in a Roman temple and bathing complex dedicated to Sulis Minerva, a fusion of a local goddess with a Roman one, the practice known as interpretatio Romana. The temple pediment carries a large male head with snake-like hair, staring out, which is neither a standard Gorgon nor anything else from the Roman repertoire. From the spring itself came about a hundred and thirty small sheets of lead, rolled or folded, on which people had written curses: complaints to the goddess about stolen cloaks, rings and money, naming suspects and asking for retribution. They are the pettiest possible documents and therefore among the most valuable, because they record what ordinary provincials wanted from a god.

Egypt. From roughly the first to the third century CE, mummies in the Fayum region were fitted with painted wooden panels over the face: portraits of the deceased, in Greek and Roman style, in coloured wax or tempera, with modelling and highlights of a quality nothing else preserves. They are set into an Egyptian funerary practice thousands of years old. Since Greek panel painting is lost, as Lesson 9 explained, and Roman panel painting survives in a handful of pieces, these portraits are simply the largest body of ancient painting on panel in existence. A funerary tradition on the Nile is where the history of ancient painting has to be written from.

Syria. At Palmyra, an oasis city on the caravan routes, the tombs held hundreds of limestone portrait busts sealing burial niches: frontal figures in local dress, women with heavy jewellery, and Palmyrene inscriptions naming the person and their descent. The format is Roman and everything in it is local. At Dura-Europos on the Euphrates, a city destroyed around 256 CE, part of the town was buried in an emergency defensive rampart, which preserved the wall paintings of a synagogue decorated with figural scenes from scripture and of a house converted into a Christian meeting place with the earliest known Christian wall paintings. Both were excavated between 1928 and 1937.

Asia Minor. Aphrodisias sat next to its own marble quarries and ran a sculpture workshop whose products are found across the empire. Its Sebasteion, a complex honouring the imperial family, carried dozens of relief panels, including one in which a Roman emperor subdues a female personification of Britain. The panel was carved by Greek-speaking sculptors in Asia Minor, about an island most of them would never see, for a local audience.

Why this matters: Provincial material is not diluted Roman art; it is Roman formats used for local purposes, and in Egypt and Asia Minor the provinces preserve what the capital does not.

The word provincial, and whether it means anything

The traditional judgment is easy to state, and it deserves its strongest form rather than a caricature. Compare a stone relief from a fort in Britain with a frieze from the Ara Pacis and the difference in anatomical control, proportion and finish is not subtle. Metropolitan workshops had better stone, better trained carvers and richer patrons, and the further from those workshops you go, the fewer of those advantages you find. That is a real observation about craft, and pretending otherwise is not generosity but bad description.

Here is what the judgment misses. It measures every object against one standard, naturalistic representation as practised in Rome, that many of these objects were not trying to meet. A tombstone at a fort had to name a man, mark his unit and be legible; a curse tablet had to be written, folded and thrown in a spring. Frontality, disproportion and repetition are frequently choices matched to that job. And the assumption breaks down badly in places: the Fayum portraits are technically extraordinary, and Aphrodisian sculptors were exporting to Rome rather than imitating it.

The useful move is to keep provincial as a geographical word and drop it as a verdict. Then you can still say a carving is crude, when it is, without implying that crudeness explains it.

So what?: Provincial should describe where an object was made, not how good it is, because many provincial objects were built for jobs that metropolitan standards do not measure.

The Arch of Constantine, and an argument about decline

Dedicated in 315 CE beside the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine is the best place to watch late antique art being argued about, because both sides of the argument are on the same monument.

Most of its sculpture is older. Roundels came off a Hadrianic monument, large panels off one of Marcus Aurelius, statues of Dacians and a frieze off Trajanic work. The imperial heads in that reused material were recut to show Constantine, exactly as described in Lesson 12. Then there are the friezes made for the arch itself: rows of squat, frontal, closely packed figures, drilled rather than modelled, with the emperor larger than everyone else and placed dead centre.

Set the two side by side and the older sculpture is more naturalistic by any measure. That comparison produced a long tradition of reading the arch as evidence of decay, of skill lost and taste coarsened, and the art historian Bernard Berenson devoted a short book to it in 1954 under exactly that heading.

The counter-case, which goes back to Alois Riegl at the start of the twentieth century, is that a period gets the art it intends. The Constantinian frieze is designed to be read quickly from below, in a crowded public space, by people who need to know instantly who is the emperor, who is receiving, and who is giving. Frontality faces the figures at the viewer. Scale states rank without a caption. The drill produces contrast that survives at a distance in strong sun. Meanwhile the same century produced the Junius Bassus sarcophagus of 359 CE, whose carving no one calls incompetent.

As for the reuse itself, the practical and the political explanations are both available: cut sculpture was there for the taking, and putting Constantine's face on the works of Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius annexed their reputations. Note how thoroughly that predicts the rest of the story in this lesson. Taking objects that belong to someone else's monument, and rededicating them to your own claim, is not a modern invention.

The upshot: The arch shows a genuine change in style, and reading it as decline assumes that naturalism was the goal, when legibility and rank were.

What ends, and what does not

Through the fourth and fifth centuries the material world changes in ways excavation registers clearly. Temple building stops. Civic euergetism, the habit of rich men paying for public buildings and games, fades. New construction goes into churches, and the plan chosen is not the temple, which was a house for a statue with the crowd outside, but the basilica, the long columned civic hall, which holds a congregation. Burial changes: sarcophagi carry biblical scenes carved with the same tools and conventions used for myth a century before.

What does not change is the vocabulary. Christ appears young, beardless and togate, in the pose of a philosopher or a classical youth, because that was the available language for authority and wisdom. Personifications of cities and seasons carry on. This is the point at which classical archaeology hands over to medieval archaeology, and the handover is a continuity rather than a break.

In short: Late antiquity redirects classical forms into new institutions rather than losing them, and the basilica church is the clearest case.

The trade, and what changed it

Now the question Lesson 1 promised to return to. The looting problem is not history; it is a live market.

The legal framework has three main instruments. The Hague Convention of 1954 protects cultural property in armed conflict. The UNESCO Convention of 1970 commits states to prevent illicit import, export and transfer of ownership, and because it is not retroactive, 1970 has become the threshold date in the acquisition policies of most serious museums: an object without documented history before 1970 is one they will not buy. The UNIDROIT Convention of 1995 addresses the return of stolen objects through private law.

What actually moved the market was police work. In 1995 investigators searching a warehouse in the Geneva Freeport found the stock and the archive of a dealer, including thousands of photographs of antiquities still dirty, broken, and in the condition they had left the ground in. Those images could be matched to objects on display in major museums, and the matching is why the following decade looks the way it does. Italy negotiated returns from several American institutions. The Metropolitan Museum sent back the Euphronios krater in 2008, the case Lesson 1 opened with. The J. Paul Getty Museum agreed in 2007 to return forty objects, including a monumental cult statue that went back to Sicily in 2011. A Getty curator was prosecuted in Italy in a trial that ended in 2010 when the limitation period expired, without a verdict.

The scholarly consequence is the one to keep. Every one of those returned objects is beautiful and none of them can tell you what it was found with. Restitution repairs a legal wrong and does not repair the evidence.

Remember: The 1970 UNESCO Convention set the date museums now use, and a warehouse of dealer photographs found in Geneva in 1995 did more than the conventions to force returns.

Who should hold the objects

Then the harder question, which is about material acquired long ago and legally, by the standards in force at the time.

In 2002 the directors of around eighteen major museums, all of them in Europe and North America, signed a declaration arguing that museums with collections spanning many cultures serve every nation, that objects acquired in earlier eras became part of the heritage of the countries that hold them, and that removing them would impoverish a shared understanding of world civilisation. The counter-argument was made immediately, and it has two parts. The declaration appeared while the Greek campaign for the Parthenon sculptures was intensifying, and no museum in a source country signed it. And an argument for the value of encyclopedic collections is not an argument about who owns any particular object.

Lesson 8 gave the Parthenon case at length; the short version is that the return argument rests on the sculptures being parts of one building now sawn in half, on the fact that the permission came from an occupying power, and on the Acropolis Museum of 2009, while the retention argument rests on the legality of the acquisition at the time, on the British Museum Act of 1963 which restricts giving objects away, and on free access to a collection spanning many cultures. Each side has a documented weakness: the cleaning of the sculptures with abrasives in the 1930s, and the pollution damage suffered by what stayed in Athens.

Two facts should be added, because they change the shape of the debate.

The first is that returns now happen. In 2022 Germany transferred ownership of more than a thousand Benin objects to Nigeria, and a London museum transferred seventy two. The claim that restitution would empty the museums of the world is no longer a prediction about an untested policy; it is a claim that can be checked against events.

The second is Palmyra. In 2015 the militants holding the site destroyed the Temple of Baalshamin and the Temple of Bel, and murdered Khaled al-Asaad, the retired head of antiquities there, who had worked at the site for decades. That is the strongest version of the argument for dispersal: objects in several countries cannot all be destroyed at once. It is also the argument that has justified removal for two hundred years, and it would license taking material from any country a curator judges unstable.

Bottom line: The dispute is now less about whether returns can happen, since they do, than about which objects, on what grounds, and with what arrangement for custody and display.

What this course was actually about

Look back at fifteen lessons and one discipline runs through all of them. An object shows you something. Its context supports a much larger set of claims. And the difference between those two is where a modern viewer quietly inserts assumptions.

You have seen that difference in specific places. White marble that was painted. A record of Greek life assembled from vases buried by Etruscans. A frieze carved to a standard its own visibility does not explain. A dome whose builders are named by bricks rather than by its inscription. A city that looks frozen but was under repair. Inscriptions whose numbers measure a fashion rather than a population. And a body of objects in museums whose findspots were destroyed to get them there.

None of that requires you to be cynical about the material. It requires you to ask, of any classical object you meet, three questions: what is actually preserved, what was recorded about where it came from, and which part of what I am seeing is a modern restoration, a modern label, or a modern assumption. That is the whole method, and it works on a museum case, a photograph, and a headline about a return.

The core of it: The habit worth keeping from this course is the reflex of separating the object, its recorded context, and the assumptions you brought with you.

Common misconceptions

  • Provincial art is failed metropolitan art. Craft standards do vary with distance from the big workshops, but many provincial objects were made for jobs that naturalism does not measure, and some, like the Fayum portraits, are unmatched anywhere.
  • Late antique art shows a loss of skill. The same century produces the Junius Bassus sarcophagus; frontality and scale are deliberate devices for reading rank quickly.
  • The 1970 UNESCO Convention made old acquisitions illegal. It is not retroactive; it works through national law, and 1970 functions as a museum acquisition threshold rather than as a legal cut-off for existing collections.
  • Restitution is a theoretical debate that never produces returns. The Euphronios krater went back in 2008, the Getty agreed to return forty objects in 2007, and over a thousand Benin objects were transferred by Germany in 2022.
  • Returning an object undoes the damage of looting. It repairs a legal and moral wrong; the archaeological context was destroyed at the moment of digging and cannot be returned.

Where this leaves us

  • The Vindolanda tablets, found from 1973 in waterlogged deposits, include a birthday invitation of about 100 CE carrying what is probably a woman's own handwriting.
  • Bath's curse tablets, the Fayum mummy portraits, Palmyrene funerary busts and the Aphrodisian workshops show provinces using Roman formats for local ends.
  • The Fayum panels are the largest surviving body of ancient painting on panel, and Dura-Europos preserves the earliest known Christian wall paintings and a figurally decorated synagogue.
  • The Arch of Constantine of 315 CE combines recut Trajanic, Hadrianic and Aurelian sculpture with new friezes whose frontality and hierarchy of scale are aimed at fast reading, not at naturalism.
  • Late antiquity redirects classical forms: the church takes the plan of the civic basilica, not of the temple.
  • The 1954, 1970 and 1995 conventions set the legal frame, and the 1995 Geneva Freeport seizure drove the returns of the following decade.
