Module 1: A Real Language, A Real History

The linguistic case that ASL is a complete natural language, its birth from French Sign Language, Martha's Vineyard, and the Hartford school, and the century of suppression and civil rights struggle that followed.

The big picture

In 1955 a new English teacher arrived at Gallaudet College, the world's only liberal arts college for deaf students, and noticed something his colleagues considered unremarkable: the signing all around him did not look like the English he was hired to teach. It did not look like broken English either. It looked like a system with its own rules. That teacher was William Stokoe, and within five years he published a claim most experts of his day found absurd: that American Sign Language is a full, natural human language, as complete as French or Japanese. He was right, and this lesson walks you through how we know.

Three myths stand between most beginners and that truth. The first says sign language is universal, one system shared by deaf people everywhere. The second says ASL is English translated onto the hands. The third says signing is elaborate pantomime, pictures drawn in the air that anyone could guess. All three are false, and each is false in an instructive way. Here is the plan for today. First we take the myths apart one by one. Then we watch Stokoe make his 1960 argument and see why it changed linguistics. We close with evidence from children and from the brain, and with an honest word about what a text course can and cannot give you.

That honest word matters from the first page. ASL lives in moving hands, faces, and bodies, and you cannot learn to produce it from print alone, any more than you could learn violin from a book of essays about violins. What you can learn here is how the language works, where it came from, and how to enter the community that owns it. That knowledge is genuinely valuable: students who arrive in a signing class already understanding the grammar and the culture learn faster and carry themselves better. Text is a fine place to learn about a language. People are the place to learn the language.

Myth one: sign language is universal

Suppose you learned ASL fluently and flew to London. Could you chat with a Deaf Londoner? Barely. British Sign Language and American Sign Language are mutually unintelligible. They do not even share an alphabet: BSL fingerspells with two hands, ASL with one. Yet England and the United States share English. If signing were derived from the surrounding spoken language, or if it were universal, neither fact would make sense. Sign languages are independent languages that grow up wherever deaf people form communities, and linguists have documented well over one hundred of them, with some counts running past three hundred: BSL, French Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, Nicaraguan Sign Language, and many more.

ASL's closest relative is not English at all. It is French Sign Language, langue des signes francaise, known as LSF, for reasons the next lesson tells as a story of ships and schools. Kinship among sign languages tracks schools and communities, not the spoken language of the surrounding country. There is also a contact system called International Sign, improvised at world Deaf gatherings, but it is a pidgin, a stripped-down bridge, not anyone's full language. We return to it near the end of the course.

Key idea: There is no universal sign language; there are hundreds of distinct sign languages, and ASL's closest relative is French Sign Language, not English.

Myth two: ASL is English on the hands

Take a plain English sentence: I went to the store yesterday. A natural ASL rendering can be written down using gloss notation, the convention this course uses throughout: English labels in capital letters standing for signs, in the order the signs actually occur. One common version is YESTERDAY STORE I GO. Read what that gloss is telling you. The time sign comes first and covers the whole sentence, so the verb GO never changes form for past tense; YESTERDAY has already done that work. There is no word for the article the, because ASL does not use articles. The topic, STORE, moves forward, and the comment about it follows. None of this is English word order, and none of it is error. It is a different grammar making different, equally lawful choices.

The confusion has a real source: there are invented classroom systems that do put English on the hands. Signing Exact English and its relatives borrow ASL signs, add invented markers for words like is and endings like ing, and arrange everything in English order. These systems, called manually coded English, were designed by educators as tools for teaching English. They are not ASL, any more than writing Turkish in English spelling would turn Turkish into English. Tellingly, deaf children exposed only to such systems tend to bend them back toward natural sign patterns, moving verbs through space and dropping the invented machinery. The human mind seems to know what a real sign language should look like.

Key idea: ASL has its own grammar (time first, topic before comment, no articles, no to-be verb), so it is a different language from English, not a manual code for it.

Myth three: signing is pantomime

The pantomime myth is the most stubborn, because some signs really do look like what they mean. The sign DRINK tips an imaginary cup at your mouth. Linguists call that iconicity, and ASL has plenty of it. But iconicity is not pantomime, for two reasons. First, iconic signs are conventional: DRINK must be made with the agreed handshape at the agreed place, or you have not said the word. Your own improvised cup-tipping is charades, not vocabulary. Second, most ASL is not transparent at all. Show a recorded ASL conversation to people who have never studied the language and ask them to translate; in classic experiments, naive viewers guessed the meanings of most signs at rates near chance. If signing were mime, they would simply understand it.

Here is the cleanest proof. The signs APPLE and CANDY are made at the same spot on the cheek with the same twisting movement; the only difference is the handshape, a bent knuckle for APPLE and a straight index finger for CANDY. Change one small formational detail and you get a completely different word, exactly the way English bat and pat differ by one sound. Pairs like that are called minimal pairs, and mime has none of them, because mime has no parts list. Languages do. Nancy Frishberg added a historical argument in 1975: over two centuries, ASL signs have drifted away from their pictorial origins toward compact, arbitrary forms, which is what happens to words in a language, not to charades. English keeps a little iconicity too, in words like buzz and hiss, and nobody calls English sound effects.

Key idea: Iconicity exists in ASL, but signs are conventional words built from a small set of contrastive parts, and minimal pairs prove those parts are real grammar.

Stokoe's proof

Now to the man with the evidence. William Stokoe (pronounced STOH-kee) came to Gallaudet to teach literature, learned to sign clumsily by his own admission, and started watching closely. In 1960 he published Sign Language Structure, a short monograph arguing that every sign is built from a small inventory of meaningless parts that combine into meaningful wholes, just as spoken words are built from sounds. He named three: the location where a sign is made, which he called the tab; the handshape, the dez; and the movement, the sig. Later researchers added palm orientation and the signals of the face, giving the five parameters you will master in Module 3. The deep point is called duality of patterning: meaningless units combining into unlimited meaning, a design feature linguists treat as a fingerprint of true human language.

In 1965 Stokoe and two Deaf colleagues, Dorothy Casterline and Carl Croneberg, published A Dictionary of American Sign Language on Linguistic Principles. The revolution was the ordering: entries were arranged by handshape and location, the language's own internal logic, rather than by the alphabetical order of English translations, and the volume included essays on the Deaf community's social life, an early map of the culture you will study in Module 2. The reception was cold. Oralist educators dismissed the work, and some of Stokoe's own colleagues thought it foolish. He kept going, founded the journal Sign Language Studies in 1972, and lived to see sign linguistics become a global field. After Stokoe, no serious definition of language could require sound.

Key idea: Stokoe's 1960 analysis showed that signs decompose into contrastive parts, giving ASL the same combinatorial architecture as spoken language.

What children and brains reveal

If ASL is a full language, children should acquire it like one, and they do. Deaf babies raised by signing parents babble with their hands, producing rhythmic, meaningless, syllable-like movements at around ten months, right on the schedule of vocal babbling; Laura Ann Petitto and Paula Marentette documented this in a well-known 1991 study. First signs appear near the first birthday, two-sign combinations in the second year, and grammatical facial marking after that: the same staircase, climbed in the same order, at the same ages as spoken language. No one teaches babies to do this. Language finds its channel.

The brain agrees. Signing is visual and spatial, so you might expect the right hemisphere, which handles much visual-spatial work, to run it. It does not. Deaf signers who suffer left-hemisphere strokes can develop sign aphasia, losing grammar and vocabulary while their hands stay strong and their ordinary gesturing stays intact; right-hemisphere damage largely spares signing. Howard Poizner, Edward Klima, and Ursula Bellugi laid out these cases in their 1987 book What the Hands Reveal About the Brain. Fluent signers also make slips of the hand, swapping handshapes between neighboring signs the way speakers swap sounds, and ASL supports poetry built on repeated handshapes, wordplay, whispering (small, low signing), and shouting (large, emphatic signing). Everything a language does, ASL does.

Key idea: ASL is acquired on the normal childhood timetable and processed in the brain's language systems, which is exactly how natural languages behave.

What a text course can honestly do

So where does that leave you and this course? With a clear contract. Print can teach you the linguistics of ASL, the parameters, the grammar of face and space, and print is arguably the best medium for the history and culture a respectful signer must know. Print can describe foundational signs precisely enough that you will recognize them and understand how they are built. What print cannot do is show you movement and timing in motion, or watch your hands and correct them. For that you need video and, above all, people: free video dictionaries like Bill Vicars' Lifeprint, and eventually a class with a Deaf instructor. Every sign description in this course carries an implicit footnote: confirm it against video before you trust your hands to it.

Treat this course, then, as the book half of a language you will finish learning in the world. By the final lesson you will know what the signing space does grammatically, why the eyebrows matter, what the Deaf community has survived, and how to walk into that community without stepping on anyone. That is not a consolation prize. It is the foundation everything else stands on.

Common misconceptions

  • ASL is a simplified system that cannot handle abstract ideas. Gallaudet University teaches philosophy, chemistry, and law in ASL every semester; like every natural language, ASL expresses whatever its users need it to express.
  • ASL is mostly fingerspelled English. Fingerspelling is a small borrowing tool for names and technical terms; the heart of ASL is its native signs and grammar, which owe nothing to English letters.
  • All deaf people know ASL. Deaf people are diverse: some grow up oral, some use other nations' sign languages, and some meet ASL late or not at all. Module 2 takes up these identities with care.
  • A dedicated learner can become a signer through books and apps alone. Print builds real knowledge, but expressive and receptive fluency grow only through video models, feedback, and interaction with Deaf signers.

Where ASL Came From: Paris, Martha's Vineyard, and Hartford

The big picture

Languages are not invented; they happen, wherever enough people need each other. So where did ASL happen? The answer is a genuinely great story, and it runs through a Paris courtyard, a Connecticut garden, an island off Cape Cod, and a 52-day Atlantic crossing. By the end of it, a language existed that no one had planned, assembled by deaf children out of everything their teachers and classmates brought them. Hold onto that point as you read: the heroes of this story include two famous men, but the language itself was built mostly by children.

Here is the plan for today. We start in Paris, where the world's first free school for deaf students turned an existing community's signing into an educational movement. We then follow Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's errand across the ocean and back, with the Deaf teacher Laurent Clerc beside him. We visit Martha's Vineyard, an island where deafness was so common that everyone signed, hearing and deaf alike. Finally we watch these streams meet at Hartford in 1817 and fuse, within a generation, into American Sign Language.

Paris: a school built on a community's language

Deaf Parisians were signing to each other long before any educator noticed. We know because one of them wrote it down: in 1779 Pierre Desloges, a deaf bookbinder, published a book defending his community's sign language, one of the first books ever published by a deaf author. Around 1760, a Catholic priest named abbé Charles-Michel de l'Épée met deaf sisters in Paris, realized they already communicated in signs, and made a decision with two centuries of consequences: instead of forcing speech, he would teach through the language of the hands. He opened his school to poor deaf children for free, adapted the community's signing, and added invented markers he called methodical signs to teach written French.

The methodical signs did not last; deaf students quietly ignored the clumsy grammar machinery and kept the natural core, an early preview of a pattern you saw in Lesson 1. But the school mattered enormously. It gathered deaf children into a community, trained deaf students to become teachers themselves, and made Paris the center of the deaf educational world. Épée died in 1789, succeeded by the abbé Sicard, and the school's star teachers in the next generation included two Deaf men: Jean Massieu and his student Laurent Clerc. The language that grew there, French Sign Language, or LSF, is the ancestor of a whole family of sign languages, including the one this course is about.

Key idea: The Paris school did not invent sign language; it institutionalized a Deaf community's existing language, LSF, and trained Deaf teachers who carried it abroad.

An American errand: Alice, Gallaudet, and Clerc

Now to Hartford, Connecticut, 1814. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a young minister recovering his health at home, watched the neighborhood children play and noticed one standing apart: nine-year-old Alice Cogswell, deaf since a childhood fever. He wrote the word hat in the dirt with a stick, pointed to his hat, and watched her understand. Alice's father, the surgeon Mason Fitch Cogswell, had been counting deaf children in Connecticut and dreaming of a school; he helped raise funds to send Gallaudet to Europe in 1815 to learn how to teach deaf students.

The trip began badly. In Britain, the Braidwood family ran the famous oral schools, teaching speech and lipreading, and they treated their method as a trade secret: Gallaudet could have it only by binding himself as an apprentice for years under restrictive terms. He refused. Then luck intervened. Sicard happened to be in London demonstrating the Paris method with Massieu and Clerc, deaf teachers answering audience questions in writing with wit and polish. Gallaudet followed them to Paris, studied at the school, and made a bold request: would Clerc, then about thirty and one of the school's finest teachers, come to America? Clerc agreed. On the voyage home, 52 days at sea in 1816, the two men traded languages, Clerc tutoring Gallaudet in LSF while Gallaudet polished Clerc's written English. On April 15, 1817, they opened the school now called the American School for the Deaf at Hartford, the first permanent school for deaf children in the United States. Alice Cogswell was the first student to enroll.

The island where everyone signed

The second stream feeding ASL ran through Martha's Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts settled in the 1600s by families from the Weald of Kent in England. Some carried a recessive gene for deafness, and generations of island intermarriage brought it out again and again. In the 1800s, roughly one American in 5,700 was born deaf; on the Vineyard the rate was about one in 155, in the up-island town of Chilmark about one in 25, and in one Chilmark neighborhood closer to one in four. Deafness there was not an event. It was a Tuesday.

The community's response, documented in Nora Ellen Groce's 1985 book Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language, is one of the most quietly radical facts in this course: everyone signed, hearing and deaf alike. Farmers signed across fields, fishermen signed boat to boat, neighbors signed at the general store, and hearing islanders sometimes signed to each other even with no deaf person present. Deaf islanders farmed, fished, married, held office, and prospered. When Groce asked elderly islanders in the late twentieth century what the deaf residents had been like, her informants struggled to remember who had been deaf at all. Disability, the island suggests, is not located in a body; it is located in the fit between a body and a community's arrangements. Martha's Vineyard arranged itself so deafness barely mattered.

Key idea: On Martha's Vineyard, hereditary deafness plus a community that signed made deafness ordinary, showing that barriers come from social arrangements, not from deafness itself.

Hartford's creole moment

When the Hartford school opened, its students arrived carrying different systems. Clerc brought LSF and the Paris teaching signs. Vineyard children brought Martha's Vineyard Sign Language. Other children brought home signs, the private gesture systems deaf children develop with their hearing families, each one different. Put children with different systems in dormitories together for years and something predictable and wonderful happens: they build a shared language, keeping what works, regularizing what does not, and generating grammar no one taught them. Linguists call this kind of fusion creolization, and the language that emerged from it is American Sign Language.

The mixture is still measurable. Lexical comparisons suggest that roughly six in ten modern ASL signs are cognate with LSF, close cousins in form and meaning, while the rest trace to Vineyard signs, home signs, and two centuries of homegrown invention and change. That is why the answer to who invented ASL is: no one, and thousands of people. Clerc supplied a rich ancestor language and a model of the educated Deaf adult; the children did the rest, generation after generation, the way children always build the languages they need.

Key idea: ASL emerged at Hartford as a creole of LSF, Martha's Vineyard signs, and home signs, restructured into a new language by the students themselves.

A golden age: schools, teachers, and a college

Hartford was a seed crystal. Graduates and teachers fanned out to found new residential schools: New York in 1818, Pennsylvania in 1820, and westward with the country, so that by 1863 there were 22 schools for deaf students in the United States. Many were founded or staffed by Deaf people; in the middle of the century, roughly four in ten teachers of deaf students were themselves deaf, teaching in sign, and the schools' dormitories did double duty as the nurseries of Deaf culture, a role Module 2 examines closely. Gallaudet married Sophia Fowler, a Deaf former student, and their youngest son, Edward Miner Gallaudet, carried the project to its summit: in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the charter of the National Deaf-Mute College in Washington, the institution known today as Gallaudet University, still the world's only university designed for deaf and hard of hearing students.

Deaf Americans of this era published newspapers, gathered in associations, and ran their own schools' classrooms in their own language. Historians of the community call the period from 1817 to 1880 a golden age, not because it was easy to be deaf in nineteenth-century America, but because the institutions of deaf life were largely built on sign and often led by Deaf people. Remember the shape of that sentence. The next lesson is about what happened when both of those things were taken away.

Common misconceptions

  • Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet invented ASL. Gallaudet founded a school and never claimed to have made a language; ASL creolized from LSF, Vineyard signs, and home signs in the hands of students.
  • ASL is just French Sign Language transplanted. LSF is its largest single ancestor, but roughly four in ten signs trace elsewhere, and the grammar was rebuilt by American children into a distinct language.
  • Deafness has been stigmatized the same way everywhere and always. Martha's Vineyard shows a community where deafness was unremarkable because everyone signed; stigma is a social arrangement, not a constant.
  • Laurent Clerc was a hearing helper in the school's story. Clerc was Deaf, a trained teacher, and the model of the educated Deaf professional; American deaf education was co-founded by a Deaf man.

The big picture

In the summer and fall of 1880, two meetings took place a continent apart, and together they set the plot of the next century of Deaf history. In August, deaf leaders from across the United States gathered in Cincinnati and founded the National Association of the Deaf, one of the oldest civil rights organizations in the country, created by the people it served. Weeks later, in September, an international congress of educators met in Milan, Italy, and voted, with almost no deaf people in the room, to strip sign language out of deaf education worldwide. One meeting built a shield. The other swung the sword it would be needed against.

This lesson follows that collision for a hundred and eight years: what Milan decided and destroyed, how the community survived underground, and how the story turns at last in March 1988, when students at Gallaudet University shut down their campus for a week and changed American history. Read this lesson as civil rights history, because that is what it is: a linguistic minority stripped of its language in the classroom, its teachers pushed from the profession, and its eventual, disciplined, joyful reclamation of power. The week in 1988 has a name you should know before you know almost anything else about the Deaf world: Deaf President Now.

Milan, 1880: the vote in the wrong hands

The Second International Congress on the Education of the Deaf drew roughly 160 delegates to Milan, nearly all of them hearing educators; the lone deaf teacher among the delegates, the American James Denison, could only watch as the assembly voted. The congress resolved that speech had, in its words, incontestable superiority over signs, and that the pure oral method, speech and lipreading with sign language banished entirely, should govern deaf education. The vote was lopsided. The American delegation of five, which included Edward Miner Gallaudet and Denison, opposed it and lost.

Think about the structure of that moment, because it repeats throughout disability history: a decision about a minority's language, education, and future, made almost entirely by people outside the minority, justified as being for their own good. Deaf adults, the living evidence of what sign-based education produced, were not consulted. The scholar's word for what stood behind that arrogance, audism, gets a full treatment in the next module. Milan did not invent the oralist movement, which had been gaining force for decades, but it handed oralism the stamp of international expert consensus, and schools across Europe and America moved quickly to comply.

Key idea: Milan 1880 imposed the pure oral method on deaf education through a vote taken almost entirely by hearing educators, over unanimous American objection.

The oralist era: what was lost

The consequences arrived in classrooms as concrete practices. Signing was punished; deaf memoirs and school records describe children made to sit on their hands, rapped on the knuckles, or forced to wear mittens, and hours once spent on geography and mathematics were spent drilling lip shapes and vocal buzz. For the minority of children with enough residual hearing, speech training had real value; as the whole of education, it failed most students, a failure the United States government itself certified in the 1965 Babbidge Report, which called oral-only deaf education a national disappointment. The deeper loss was professional and communal. Deaf teachers, roughly four in ten members of the profession at mid-century, were driven out because their classrooms ran on sign; by the World War I era the figure had fallen to roughly one in seven, and deaf adults lost their main path into middle-class professional life.

The era had a famous champion, and his story is worth telling carefully rather than as cartoon villainy. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, was the son of a deaf mother and the husband of a deaf wife, a lifelong teacher of deaf children who believed completely that he was helping. He was also the era's most powerful opponent of Deaf community life: his 1884 paper, Memoir upon the Formation of a Deaf Variety of the Human Race, worried that residential schools, sign language, and deaf intermarriage were producing a self-perpetuating deaf population, and he campaigned against all three. Edward Miner Gallaudet fought him publicly for decades, defending the combined method, speech training where useful atop a sign-based education. Bell teaches the course's hardest lesson early: harm to a community does not require hatred of it. Benevolence without consent, aimed at erasing a language, is still erasure.

Key idea: Oralism punished signing children, expelled Deaf teachers from the profession, and was championed most powerfully by a man who believed he was being kind.

Resistance: the NAD, Veditz, and the underground language

The community did not wait to be rescued. The NAD, born in that Cincinnati summer of 1880 under its first president, Robert P. McGregor, fought oralism in print, in petitions, and in court for the century that followed, and it is still the community's national advocate today. Deaf adults built parallel institutions where the language was safe: churches, clubs, newspapers famously known as the Little Paper Family, athletic associations, and the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, founded in 1901 because insurers discriminated against deaf customers.

And the language itself survived where adults could not reach: in the dormitories. Residential schools, even strictly oral ones, gathered deaf children together, and after lights-out the children taught each other ASL, older students passing it to younger ones, deaf children of deaf parents serving as the little professors of the underground. It is one of history's neat ironies that the boarding schools oralism used as its instrument preserved the language oralism meant to kill. The NAD's George Veditz saw the danger clearly anyway. Between 1910 and 1921 the association raised funds to film master signers, so that the language would survive even if the schools succeeded in banning it. In his own 1913 film, The Preservation of the Sign Language, Veditz signed a line that became the community's banner: "As long as we have deaf people on earth, we will have signs." The Veditz films entered the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2010, national treasures now, recorded as a hedge against extinction.

Key idea: Through the NAD, Deaf institutions, dormitory transmission, and the Veditz films, the community kept ASL alive through fifty years of official suppression.

The thaw

Three forces cracked oralism's grip in the 1960s and 1970s. Stokoe's linguistics, from Lesson 1, made sign language scientifically respectable: it is hard to ban a language once linguists insist it is one. The Babbidge Report made oralism's educational failure official. And the broader civil rights era gave the community a new vocabulary of rights and identity. Schools began adopting Total Communication, a philosophy of using any means that worked, sign included, and by the 1980s researchers and Deaf educators were pressing further, toward bilingual-bicultural programs teaching ASL and English both. The classroom door that Milan had slammed was reopening. What had not changed, anywhere, was who held power. Deaf schools, agencies, and the community's own university were still run, almost without exception, by hearing people.

Key idea: Linguistics, federal evaluation, and the civil rights climate broke oralism's monopoly by the 1970s, but institutional power over Deaf lives remained in hearing hands.

March 1988: Deaf President Now

Gallaudet University had been led by hearing presidents since its charter in 1864. In March 1988, the search for a new president came down to three finalists: two deaf candidates, I. King Jordan and Harvey Corson, and one hearing candidate, Elisabeth Zinser, an administrator who did not sign. On Sunday, March 6, the board of trustees chose Zinser and announced it by press release. To a campus that had marched a week earlier under banners reading Deaf President Now, the insult landed twice: the choice itself, and the board chair, Jane Bassett Spilman, who was widely reported as saying that deaf people were not ready to function in a hearing world. She disputed the phrasing; the campus had heard enough.

Students shut the gates with heavy vehicles, hot-wired buses to block entrances, and closed the university. Four student leaders, Bridgetta Bourne, Jerry Covell, Greg Hlibok, and Tim Rauch, organized rallies, press conferences, and marches to the Capitol, and issued four demands: Zinser's resignation and the selection of a deaf president; Spilman's resignation; a majority of deaf members on the board of trustees; and no reprisals against any protester. Faculty, staff, and alumni lined up behind them, the NAD behind that, and the story went national. Hlibok debated on ABC's Nightline alongside actress Marlee Matlin; unions, members of Congress, and presidential candidates sent support. On Thursday night Zinser resigned. On Sunday, March 13, the board delivered everything else: I. King Jordan, dean and Gallaudet alumnus, deafened at 21, became the university's first deaf president; Philip Bravin, deaf, became chair of the board; reprisals were forsworn. Jordan's summary traveled around the world: "Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do, except hear."

Key idea: In one disciplined week in March 1988, Gallaudet students won all four demands, and the Deaf community's own university passed at last into Deaf leadership.

What DPN changed

Deaf President Now mattered far beyond one campus. It is credited by legislators and historians with adding momentum to the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed in 1990, which transformed American law on access; deaf witnesses and the memory of the protest were present through the hearings. Every Gallaudet president since 1988 has been deaf. The protest gave the country a new default image of deaf people, not patients awaiting repair but a community demanding its own leadership, and it gave Deaf children something communities transmit even more carefully than language: proof. In 2010, the international congress of deaf educators, meeting in Vancouver, formally rejected the Milan resolutions of 1880 and expressed regret for their consequences. It took 130 years for the sword to be laid down. The shield, you will notice, had been there since the first August in Cincinnati.

Key idea: DPN reshaped law, leadership, and public imagination, and in 2010 the successor of the Milan congress formally repudiated the 1880 resolutions.

Common misconceptions

  • Milan merely recommended adding speech training to sign-based schools. The resolutions demanded the pure oral method, with sign language excluded from instruction entirely.
  • Oralism was harsh but educationally effective. The federal Babbidge Report of 1965 judged oral-only deaf education a failure; most students left with weak access to both speech and academics.
  • Alexander Graham Bell hated deaf people. He loved and worked with deaf people all his life; his campaign against sign, deaf teachers, and Deaf community shows that benevolence without consent can still do great harm.
  • Deaf President Now was a spontaneous riot. It was a disciplined, week-long, nonviolent campaign with four precise demands, organized leadership, and broad alumni, faculty, and national support, and it won every demand.

Module 2: The Deaf World: Culture, Community, Identity

What it means that Deaf names a culture and not just an audiogram: the community's values, norms, arts, and institutions, the paths people take into it, and a clear-eyed treatment of audism, language deprivation, access, and allyship.

Deaf Culture: A Community, Not a Condition

The big picture

Picture one person described twice. An audiologist's report says: profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, unaided thresholds beyond 90 decibels. A friend from the local Deaf club says: she is a fourth-generation Deaf woman, a fierce ASL storyteller, on the board of the state association, famous for winning every game night. Both descriptions are accurate. They are not describing the same thing. The first measures an ear. The second introduces a member of a culture. This lesson is about the second description, and about why, for hundreds of thousands of Americans, deafness is less like a diagnosis and more like an ethnicity: a language, a shared history, a set of values, arts, institutions, jokes, and rules for living, passed from person to person for two centuries.

The stakes of getting this right are practical. If you think of deaf people only through the medical lens, everything about the community will confuse you: why many Deaf adults describe their lives as full rather than broken, why some do not experience their deafness as loss at all, why the community celebrates Deaf babies, and why a residential school closing is mourned like a hometown flooded by a dam. By the end of this lesson you will have the cultural lens too, and the Deaf world will make sense on its own terms.

Big D, small d

Written English gives the community a useful convention. Lowercase deaf describes hearing status: an audiological fact about the ear, applying to anyone who does not hear, whatever language they use. Capitalized Deaf describes cultural identity: a person who uses ASL, identifies with the Deaf community, and shares its norms and history. The convention was proposed by the linguist James Woodward in the 1970s and popularized by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries, two Deaf scholars whose 1988 book Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture taught a wide audience to see the culture at all. The two categories overlap but do not coincide. A hearing child of Deaf parents may be culturally Deaf in nearly every respect while hearing perfectly. An elderly man who loses his hearing at seventy is audiologically deaf but culturally a hearing man who now cannot hear. Culture follows language and belonging, not decibels.

You will also meet the phrase hard of hearing, which the community uses for people with partial hearing, and you will meet people who move between identities across a lifetime. The polite move, always, is to let people name themselves. When this course writes Deaf with a capital letter, it is talking about the culture; when it writes deaf, it is talking about hearing status, and the difference is doing real work in the sentence.

Key idea: Lowercase deaf names an audiological status; capital Deaf names membership in a language community with its own culture, and the two do not always coincide.

What makes a culture

Anthropologists recognize a culture by a familiar checklist: a shared language, values, behavioral norms, traditions, institutions, arts, and a sense of peoplehood transmitted across generations. American Deaf culture checks every box. The language is ASL, and it sits at the center the way Hebrew sits at the center of Jewish life or French at the center of Quebec's identity: not merely a tool but a treasure, the thing the community organized itself to protect through the century you studied in Module 1. The institutions include the residential schools, the Deaf clubs, the churches and temples with signing congregations, the state associations, the NAD, Gallaudet University, and a national calendar of tournaments, pageants, conferences, and reunions. The traditions include storytelling marathons, the long goodbye at the door, and the passing of name signs. The history includes Hartford, Milan, Veditz's films, and Deaf President Now, told and retold the way nations tell their founding stories.

Notice what is not on the checklist: hearing loss. Culture is carried by practices, not by ears. That is why the community has long insisted it is a linguistic minority, not a disability group that happens to sign. Both framings exist in Deaf lives, and Module 2's next lesson takes the disability politics seriously, but the community's own self-description leads with language and peoplehood. The Deaf scholar Barbara Kannapell put it directly: ASL is the creation of the Deaf community, and to reject the language is to reject the people.

Key idea: Deaf culture satisfies every standard anthropological test of culture, with ASL at the center, which is why the community describes itself as a linguistic minority.

Paths into the community

Here is the demographic fact that shapes everything else: more than nine in ten deaf children are born to hearing parents. Deaf culture is therefore unusual among cultures: most members do not inherit it at home. A small core, the Deaf of Deaf, grow up with ASL from birth and carry the culture's deepest fluency; they have historically supplied many of its leaders, teachers, and artists. Everyone else finds the community later: at a residential school dormitory, at a mainstream program's lunch table, at Gallaudet or NTID (the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester), at a Deaf club, or, increasingly, online. The residential schools were for generations the great gateway, the place where a hearing family's deaf child met the language and the people at last; that is why alumni loyalty runs so deep and why school closures wound the community so badly.

Membership, the community teaches, is attitudinal more than audiological. What earns belonging is using the language, showing up, respecting the norms, and carrying the history. Hearing people connected by family belong in their own way: hearing children of deaf adults, called Codas, grow up bilingual and bicultural, interpreting the hearing world for their parents and the Deaf world for everyone else, and their organization, CODA International, has met since 1983. Hearing signers like you can become welcome allies and friends, and the road in is exactly the one this course keeps pointing to: learn the language honestly, show up respectfully, and let the community set the terms.

Key idea: Because over ninety percent of deaf children have hearing parents, Deaf culture is transmitted mostly through schools and community rather than through families, and belonging is earned by attitude and language.

Values in action

Cultural values show up as everyday behavior, and a few of them reliably surprise hearing newcomers. First, information is shared generously. Deaf people have spent lifetimes locked out of ambient information, the overheard radio, the announcement half-caught at the airport, the family gossip traded in the kitchen, so the culture treats full information as a duty of care. When a Deaf friend leaves a gathering, they say where they are going and roughly when they will return; withholding news that affects someone is genuinely rude. Second, communication is direct. A Deaf acquaintance may tell you that you have gained weight or ask what you paid for your car, not as insult but as ordinary honest talk between people who value clarity; euphemism reads as evasion. Third, time bends toward people. The famous Deaf goodbye can take an hour, moving from the living room to the doorway to the parking lot, because in a small, scattered community, face time is precious and no one knows exactly when the next gathering will come.

Fourth, the community leans collective where mainstream America leans individualist. Decisions consider the group; achievements are the community's pride; resources, including a new skill like your ASL, are expected to circulate. And fifth, the visual world is arranged on purpose. Deaf gatherings happen in circles and horseshoes, never rows; lighting matters; a good host clears sightlines the way a hearing host adjusts the music. Watch a Deaf dinner party seat itself and you are watching a culture optimize its space, instantly and without discussion.

Key idea: Information sharing, directness, generous time for people, collective loyalty, and deliberate visual arrangement are core Deaf norms, and each one grows straight out of life in a visual, tightly knit community.

The arts of a visual people

Every culture makes art from its language, and ASL literature is a world of its own. In an ABC story, the teller narrates a scene, a haunted house, a drag race, using handshapes in strict alphabetical order from A to Z, so form and story race each other to the finish; number stories do the same with 1 through 15 or beyond. Classifier stories paint whole landscapes with the classifier handshapes you will learn in Module 4. ASL poetry, shaped by masters like Clayton Valli and Ella Mae Lentz, builds rhyme from repeated handshapes and rhythm from repeated movement paths, and loses everything in translation, which is the point: it is literature that can exist only in a signed language. Since 1991 the traveling ASL poetry and storytelling stage has had national festivals, and every Deaf school has its champion tellers.

Visual art has a named movement: De'VIA, short for Deaf View Image Art, declared by a manifesto that Betty G. Miller, Chuck Baird, and colleagues wrote in 1989. De'VIA uses strong hands, eyes, and ears as motifs to express Deaf experience, both its resistance side, paintings of taped mouths and forbidden hands, and its affirmation side, canvases of signing families glowing like icons. Theater runs deep: the National Theatre of the Deaf, founded in 1967, put ASL on world stages and won a Tony Award; Deaf West Theatre's signed Broadway revivals, including Spring Awakening in 2015, played to packed houses. And film has brought Oscars: Marlee Matlin's best actress award in 1987 and Troy Kotsur's best supporting actor award in 2022, the first for a Deaf man, for a film about a Coda family. When Kotsur signed his acceptance speech, an interpreter voiced it to the hall, a neat image of the whole arrangement between the two worlds.

Key idea: ABC stories, ASL poetry, De'VIA, and Deaf theater and film are art forms native to a visual language, and several are literally impossible in speech or print.

Deaf gain

The scholars H-Dirksen Bauman and Joseph Murray, both at Gallaudet, coined a phrase that flips the usual accounting: Deaf gain. Instead of asking what deafness takes away, ask what Deaf people and their ways of being have contributed. The list is long. Deaf visual expertise has taught cognitive science how experience reshapes attention and peripheral vision. Deaf architectural thinking, formalized in Gallaudet's DeafSpace guidelines, has produced principles, wide corridors for signing pairs, diffuse glare-free light, clear sightlines, that make buildings better for everyone. The football huddle is credited to Gallaudet's own team in the 1890s, formed so opponents could not read the quarterback's signs. Text messaging, video calls, and captioning were embraced by and refined for deaf users years before hearing people discovered they wanted the same things: watch a hearing commuter reading captions on a muted train video and you are watching Deaf gain at work. None of this denies that hearing loss can bring real costs, especially without language access. It insists the ledger has two columns, and that a culture that produces poetry, architecture, and community of this depth is not a deficit walking.

Key idea: Deaf gain reframes deafness by counting contributions, from visual cognition research and DeafSpace design to the football huddle and mainstream captioning, alongside costs.

Common misconceptions

  • Deaf culture is just coping with hearing loss. Coping does not produce poetry festivals, a named art movement, national institutions, and founding stories; a people does. The culture is organized around a language, not around an audiogram.
  • All deaf people identify as culturally Deaf. Many late-deafened and oral deaf adults identify with hearing culture, and identities can shift over a lifetime. Let people name themselves.
  • Deaf directness is rudeness. Within the culture's norms, direct observation and full information sharing are care, not attack; the offense would be leaving someone uninformed.
  • Hearing people can never be part of the Deaf world. Codas grow up inside it, and respectful hearing signers become genuine allies and friends. What is not on offer is ownership: the language and culture belong to Deaf people.

The big picture

A Deaf woman checks into an emergency room at 2 a.m. with chest pain. She asks, in writing, for an ASL interpreter. The night staff, busy and unsure of the rules, hand her a clipboard instead and mouth the words very slowly. For the next six hours, decisions about her heart are made around her, over her, and about her, in a language she cannot fully access, in her own country, under a law that has required better since 1990. Nobody in the room hates deaf people. That is precisely the lesson: the harm does not require hate. It requires only the quiet assumption that hearing ways are the real ways and that her access is optional, an extra, someone else's job. The Deaf community has a name for that assumption, and this lesson is about the name, the harm, the law, and what respectful behavior, yours included, actually looks like.

The word is audism: the notion that one is superior based on one's ability to hear, or to behave in the manner of one who hears. A Deaf scholar, Tom Humphries, coined it in 1975, and the psychologist Harlan Lane pushed it into wide use in the 1990s with his book The Mask of Benevolence, whose title names the pattern you met in Module 1: harm delivered as help. Racism and sexism have long had names, and naming is power; audism gave the community a single word for a thousand daily experiences that hearing people rarely notice at all.

Audism at three levels

Individual audism lives in small moments. Speaking to the hearing companion instead of the deaf customer. Saying never mind, I'll tell you later, when a deaf person asks what everyone is laughing about. Praising a deaf person's speech as if intelligible English were her highest achievement. Grabbing a signer's hands to make them stop signing, which is, think about it, putting a hand over someone's mouth. Assuming a deaf person cannot drive, parent, work, or lead. Each instance is minor; a lifetime of them is weather.

Institutional audism is the pattern set into systems. Schools that punished signing for a century. Employers who screen out deaf applicants for jobs they could do. Hospitals that treat interpreters as an inconvenience rather than a legal duty. Hearing boards running Deaf schools and agencies, the arrangement Deaf President Now finally broke at Gallaudet. Media that portray deafness only as tragedy or as inspiration, never as ordinary life. And internalized audism is the saddest level: deaf people taught so long that hearing is better that they believe it about themselves, feel ashamed of signing in public, or rank other deaf people by how hearing they can appear. Communities recover from internalized oppression the way this one has: by pride movements, by history telling, by art, by DPN.

One pattern deserves its own name because it is so common. Dinner table syndrome describes the deaf family member at a hearing table where conversation flies too fast to follow, who asks what was said and receives a summary of two words: nothing important. Multiply that dinner by a childhood and you have thousands of hours of lost family, lost incidental learning, lost belonging. Deaf adults name it, decades later, as one of the deepest hurts, and the remedy costs nothing but effort: families who learn to sign, and who accept the duty of full information you met in the last lesson.

Language deprivation: the real emergency

Here is the part of this lesson that public health takes most seriously. The human brain has a sensitive period for first language acquisition, roughly the first five years, and a child who reaches that window's end without full access to any language, signed or spoken, suffers lasting harm to language, literacy, and cognition. Researchers now call the outcome language deprivation syndrome. Deaf babies are the children most at risk, for a painfully simple reason: a deaf baby in a non-signing home may hear fragments through devices and lipread shadows, receiving something that looks like exposure but is not full access. The tragedy is fully preventable, because there is one language channel every deaf baby can access completely from day one: a visual one.

This is why the community and a growing body of research urge the same policy: give deaf children sign language early, whatever else you also do. Signing costs nothing, harms nothing, and coexists happily with hearing aids, implants, and speech therapy; the evidence is against the old fear that signing prevents speech, and a bilingual deaf child, fluent in ASL and literate in English, holds every option for life. The National Association of the Deaf frames early language access as a civil right, and you now know enough history to hear the echo: the same community that Milan tried to cut off from its language is fighting to make sure no deaf child grows up without one.

Key idea: The preventable emergency in deafness is not the ears but language deprivation in early childhood, and early sign language access is the zero-risk insurance against it.

Words that respect, words to retire

Terminology is where new signers first show their respect or their homework's absence. The community's preferred terms are simple: deaf and hard of hearing. The National Association of the Deaf is explicit that hearing impaired, though it once passed as polite, is now widely rejected: it defines a whole people as damaged hearing machinery, and nobody wants to be an impairment with legs. Older labels are worse: deaf-mute is wrong on the facts, since deaf people have voices and many choose when to use them, and deaf and dumb collapses into insult no matter how historically it is explained. When in doubt, ask the person; identity language belongs to its owner. And a small but real point of pride: Deaf is not a bad word. Hearing newcomers sometimes whisper it or reach for euphemisms, which lands as if deafness were shameful. Say deaf plainly. The community does.

Key idea: Use deaf and hard of hearing, retire hearing impaired and every version of deaf-mute, and let people name themselves.

Technology without the culture war

You cannot understand the modern community without the cochlear implant, so let us handle it with the honesty it deserves. A cochlear implant is a surgically placed device that bypasses damaged hair cells and stimulates the auditory nerve with electrodes; a processor behind the ear captures sound and encodes it. It is not a cure and not a hearing ear: outcomes vary enormously, from adults who converse by phone to users who gain only environmental awareness, and it requires years of training, especially for children. In the 1990s, as pediatric implantation spread, parts of the Deaf community saw an old story returning, hearing authorities choosing for deaf children against the community's language, and opposition was fierce; the NAD's early position papers reflected it. In 2000 the NAD revised its position toward respect for family choice, paired with insistence on full information and, crucially, on language: an implanted child is still a deaf child, and still needs what every deaf child needs, complete access to language during the critical years.

That is the modern synthesis you should carry: the community's quarrel was never really with electrodes; it was with the idea that a device substitutes for language and belonging. Bimodal bilingual children, implant plus ASL, English plus Deaf community, lose nothing and hold everything. Hearing aids, by the way, predate the controversy and carry little of it: many culturally Deaf adults wear them for what they offer and remain exactly as Deaf as before. Devices are tools. Identity is not issued with the hardware.

Key idea: Cochlear implants are variable tools, not cures, and the durable resolution is bimodal bilingualism: any device a family chooses, plus early ASL and Deaf community, so language is never gambled.

The access infrastructure

American law now scaffolds daily Deaf life, and you should know the load-bearing pieces. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 before it, requires effective communication from hospitals, courts, police, employers, schools, and businesses open to the public: qualified interpreters, captioning, or written exchange, matched to the situation's stakes, and paid for by the covered entity, never by the deaf person. A hospital that hands a chest-pain patient a clipboard when an interpreter is needed is not merely rude; it is out of compliance. Captioning has its own history: after the TV Decoder Circuitry Act of 1990, caption chips came standard in televisions, and captioned media went from charity to default. Telecommunications transformed twice: first the TTY era of typed phone calls, then video relay service, VRS, in which a deaf caller signs by videophone to an interpreter who voices to the hearing party, funded by the FCC through a fee on all phone service. Add flashing doorbells, bed-shaker alarms, and captioned telephones, and the built world grows steadily more navigable. Gallaudet went further and redesigned architecture itself: the DeafSpace guidelines, over one hundred principles for buildings that fit signing bodies, wide paths for conversation on the move, diffuse light that spares the eyes, sightlines that let a room converse.

Key idea: The ADA's effective communication rule, captioning law, FCC-funded video relay, and DeafSpace design form the legal and physical infrastructure of Deaf access, and the covered entity, not the deaf person, pays.

What allies actually do

End with behavior, because respect is a set of habits. Face the person, not the interpreter, and speak normally: the interpreter needs no exaggerated mouthing, and the deaf person is the one you are talking to. Never say never mind; if it was worth saying, it is worth repeating. Do not grab hands, pet, or tap excessively; you will learn proper attention-getting in Module 5. Do not order for a deaf person at a restaurant or answer questions directed to them; competence is not yours to perform on their behalf. Learn to sign, and then use it, imperfectly and humbly, rather than hiding behind apology. Support Deaf-owned businesses, Deaf teachers, Deaf artists. Amplify without speaking over: the community has spent two centuries being explained by hearing experts, and the ally's job is to pass the microphone, not to become the next expert. You will get things wrong; when corrected, thank the person and adjust. That, more than fluency, is what the community reads as respect.

Key idea: Allyship is habits: talk directly to deaf people, repeat rather than dismiss, learn and use the language, defer to Deaf leadership, and take correction gracefully.

Common misconceptions

  • Audism requires malice. Most audism is casual assumption, not hate: the ER that treats an interpreter as optional harms as surely as any bigot, while feeling kind.
  • Signing delays or prevents speech in deaf children. Evidence does not support the old fear; early full language access, which sign guarantees, is the strongest foundation for every later skill, spoken English included.
  • Hearing impaired is the polite term. The community broadly rejects it; use deaf and hard of hearing, and follow each person's own naming.
  • The Deaf community opposes all technology. Deaf life runs on technology, from videophones to bed shakers; the historical quarrel was with devices offered as substitutes for language and community, not with tools as such.

Module 3: The Building Blocks: Parameters, Fingerspelling, Numbers

The formational machinery of ASL: the five parameters every sign is built from, the 26 letters of the one-handed manual alphabet described shape by shape, and the number system from 1 to 20 and beyond, with ages, times, and money.

The Five Parameters of a Sign

The big picture

Every word you have ever spoken was built from a small kit of sounds: English gets by on about forty of them, and every sentence you will say today is those forty pieces, endlessly rearranged. Lesson 1 gave you Stokoe's great insight, that signs work the same way. Today you learn the kit. Every ASL sign is assembled from five ingredients, called parameters: handshape, location, movement, palm orientation, and non-manual signals. Change any one ingredient and you either get a different word, or you get no word at all, the signing equivalent of a typo. Fluent signers read these five things simultaneously and instantly, the way you hear all the features of a spoken syllable at once.

Why does this matter to you now, in a text course? Because parameters are the language this course uses to describe every sign it teaches. When Module 5 tells you that PLEASE is a flat open hand, palm on the center of the chest, moving in a circle, it is handing you a parameter recipe: handshape, location, orientation, movement. Learn to read recipes now and every later lesson becomes precise instead of vague. Parameters are also your future error-detector: when a Deaf conversation partner squints at your sign, the problem is almost always one parameter, and if you can ask yourself which one, you can fix it. Here is each ingredient in turn.

Parameter one: handshape

Handshape is the configuration of your fingers and thumb: which are extended, which are curled, which touch. ASL uses several dozen distinctive handshapes, and many are named after the fingerspelled letters and numbers they resemble: the A handshape (a fist with the thumb alongside), the B (flat hand, fingers together), the C (a curve), the 1 (index finger out), the 5 (all fingers spread), the S (a locked fist), the O (fingertips meeting the thumb in a ring), the claw (a 5 with fingers hooked). You met the proof that handshape is contrastive in Lesson 1: APPLE and CANDY, identical twins at the cheek with the same twisting movement, split apart by one knuckle. That is handshape doing the work that the difference between b and p does in English.

A useful research finding: some handshapes are easy and some are hard. The so-called unmarked handshapes, roughly B, A, S, C, O, 1, and 5, are the most frequent in ASL and in sign languages worldwide, are the first that Deaf babies master, and are the ones you will meet most often in Module 5. The rarer, harder shapes, like the R (crossed fingers) or the bent 3, come later to children and to you. If your fingers feel clumsy at first, you are simply walking the same staircase every signer walked.

Key idea: Handshape is the finger configuration of a sign, drawn from a limited inventory in which a few unmarked shapes (B, A, S, C, O, 1, 5) do most of the language's work.

Parameter two: location

Location is where the sign is made. The canvas is called the signing space: roughly a rectangle from the top of your head to your waist and a little wider than your shoulders, where the watching eye naturally rests. Within that space, location distinguishes words just as ruthlessly as handshape does. Here is the classic minimal triple, three signs that share one handshape (the X, a crooked index finger) and one movement (a small sideways drag): made across the forehead, the sign means SUMMER; across the nose, UGLY; across the chin, DRY. One hand, three heights, three unrelated words. Signs made near the face cluster more densely and use finer distinctions than signs made lower, for a practical reason: conversation partners watch each other's faces, not each other's hands, so the area around the face is in high-resolution vision. ASL's design respects your eyes' engineering.

Key idea: Location, the place in signing space where a sign happens, is fully contrastive: SUMMER, UGLY, and DRY differ by nothing but forehead, nose, and chin.

Parameter three: movement

Movement is what the hands do: a straight path, an arc, a circle, a twist, a tap, a wiggle of the fingers, done once or repeated. Movement distinguishes words too, and it does one especially elegant job in ASL grammar: it separates related nouns from verbs. Consider SIT and CHAIR. Both use the same two-handed shape, one pair of fingers landing on another like legs settling onto a bench. SIT, the verb, makes the landing once, a single motion. CHAIR, the noun, makes it twice, a small repeated bounce. The same pattern runs through pairs like FLY and AIRPLANE, OPEN-DOOR and DOOR: single smooth movement for the action, doubled reduced movement for the thing. Linguists Ted Supalla and Elissa Newport documented this noun-verb rhythm in 1978, and it is one of many places where ASL builds grammar out of motion itself.

Key idea: Movement is contrastive and grammatical: a single motion versus a repeated bounce is exactly what separates verb-noun pairs like SIT and CHAIR.

Parameter four: palm orientation

Orientation is the direction your palm faces: up, down, out toward the viewer, in toward you, or to the side. It was the parameter added after Stokoe's original three, once researchers, including Robbin Battison, showed that pairs of signs could differ by orientation alone. A clean teaching pair: STAR and SOCKS. Both use two 1 handshapes, index fingers side by side, brushing alternately against each other. For STAR, the fingers point up and away, palms out, the hands striking upward toward the sky. For SOCKS, the same fingers point down toward the floor. Rotate the wrists and the heavens become laundry. Orientation also carries meaning in grammar you will meet later: MY is a palm on your chest, while the same flat hand turned outward toward your conversation partner means YOUR. The palm is a pointer, and ASL never wastes a pointer.

Key idea: Palm orientation is a full parameter: STAR and SOCKS share handshape, location, and movement, and differ only in which way the fingers and palms face.

Parameter five: non-manual signals

The fifth parameter leaves the hands entirely. Non-manual signals, NMS for short, are the grammatical work of the face, head, and body: eyebrow position, eye aperture, mouth shape, head tilts and shakes, shoulder shifts. Some individual signs require them: NOT-YET, for example, uses the same loose hand waving near the hip as the sign LATE, but adds the tongue resting visibly over the lower teeth and a slight headshake; without the face, you have signed LATE whether you meant to or not. Beyond single signs, NMS run whole sentences: eyebrows mark questions and topics, headshakes negate entire clauses, mouth patterns add adverbs. That grammar is so important that it gets all of Lesson 9. For now, bank the principle: in ASL, a blank face is not neutral, it is ungrammatical, the equivalent of speaking English in a flat robotic monotone with no sentence melody at all.

Key idea: Non-manual signals, the grammar of face, head, and body, are the fifth parameter: LATE and NOT-YET are separated by the face alone.

Two hands, two rules

Many signs use both hands, and here ASL shows a beautiful economy that Robbin Battison spelled out in 1978. Two-handed signs obey one of two conditions. The symmetry condition: if both hands move, they must share the same handshape and the same or mirrored movement, as in the sign BICYCLE, two fists pedaling. The dominance condition: if the hands have different handshapes, only the dominant hand moves, and the passive hand is restricted to the small unmarked set (B, A, S, C, O, 1, 5), serving as a simple surface or base, as when the dominant hand writes on the flat passive palm in the sign WRITE. Your dominant hand, by the way, is simply the hand you write with; left-handed signers mirror everything, and that is fully standard. What you will never find is a sign demanding two different complicated handshapes doing two different complicated dances: the language is engineered to be watchable, and those rules keep the load on the viewer's attention humane.

Key idea: Battison's symmetry and dominance conditions mean two moving hands must match, and an unmatched passive hand must be one of the simple unmarked shapes.

Using the kit

Here is how parameters serve you from now on. First, as a reader: every sign recipe in Module 5 names handshape, location, movement, and orientation in that spirit, and you should picture each parameter as you read, then confirm the whole against video on Lifeprint or a similar dictionary, because a text recipe is a map and the video is the territory. Second, as a self-editor: when a sign of yours misfires, run the checklist. Right handshape? Right place? Right motion, right repetition? Right palm direction? Right face? Learners' errors overwhelmingly live in one parameter at a time, and naming the sick parameter is half the cure. Third, as a student of the community: parameter talk is how Deaf teachers and interpreters discuss signs among themselves, how dictionaries index them, and how linguists compare dialects, including the Black ASL variants you will meet in Module 6. You have joined a conversation that runs on this vocabulary.

Key idea: Parameters are your reading glasses, your debugger, and your professional vocabulary: five questions that fully specify any sign in the language.

Common misconceptions

  • Handshape is the sign; the rest is style. All five parameters are contrastive: SUMMER and DRY share every parameter except location, and STAR and SOCKS differ only in orientation. Style begins after the parameters are right.
  • Left-handed signing is backwards signing. Lefties simply swap dominant and passive roles throughout; mirrored signing is completely standard and Deaf viewers process it without effort.
  • The face merely adds emotion. Non-manual signals are obligatory grammar; omitting the NOT-YET tongue does not make the sign bland, it makes it a different word.
  • Any two handshapes can combine in a two-handed sign. Battison's conditions forbid it: either the hands match, or the passive hand must be one of the unmarked shapes.

The big picture

Somewhere in your first real ASL conversation, this moment will come: you will need your own name. There is no sign for it, and there should not be; you do not have a name sign yet, and as you learned in Module 2, one is not yours to invent. What you have instead is the manual alphabet: 26 handshapes, made with one steady hand, that spell English words letter by letter. Fingerspelling is ASL's borrowing tool, the bridge it keeps to written English, and it is the one piece of the language a text course can describe almost completely, because the letters are still shapes, not movements. Almost completely: two letters move, several pairs differ by details a paragraph can only point at, and your handshapes will drift without a mirror and a video model. So here is the honest contract for this lesson: read every description, form every letter slowly as you read, and then verify the whole alphabet against a video chart, such as the free one at Lifeprint, before you trust your hand.

Where does the alphabet come from? Not from England: remember that British signers spell with two hands. The one-handed alphabet descends from a Spanish manual alphabet published in the 1600s, adopted by the Paris school, and carried to Hartford by Laurent Clerc in 1817, the voyage you know from Module 1. When you fingerspell, your hand is repeating shapes that crossed the Atlantic two centuries ago.

How to hold the instrument

Position first, letters second. Hold your dominant hand up beside your face, roughly at shoulder or chin height, a comfortable few inches out, palm generally facing your viewer. Keep the hand there: the single most common beginner error is bouncing, punching each letter forward as if stamping envelopes. The hand stays planted; only the fingers change. Keep the elbow relaxed at your side, not winged up. Spell at an even, unhurried rhythm, because a steady slow word is far easier to read than a fast jerky one, and speed will arrive on its own with months of practice. Mouth the whole word naturally as you spell it, the way fluent signers do: say the word banana silently with your lips while your fingers spell it, never the letters b-a-n-a-n-a one by one. And for double letters, as in APPLE or COFFEE, either slide the repeated letter slightly sideways or open and re-form it with a small bounce, whichever your video model shows.

Key idea: Fingerspelling lives in one quiet place beside your face: plant the hand, move only the fingers, keep an even rhythm, and mouth whole words, not letters.

The confusable families

Learners rarely confuse S with L; they confuse neighbors. Study these families deliberately. The fist family, A, S, T, M, N, E, differs only in where the thumb sits: beside the fingers for A, locked across them for S, poking between index and middle for T, buried under three fingers for M, under two for N, and pressed under all four curled fingertips for E. The orientation twins: K and P are the same handshape pointing up versus down, and so are G and Q; U becomes H when the hand rotates from vertical to horizontal. The circle pair: D versus F is a question of which fingers make the ring; in D the tall finger is the index and the ring is small and low, in F the index itself closes the circle and three fingers stand tall. And C versus O is simply open versus closed. Drill the families side by side, in a mirror and against video, and the alphabet's hardest 20 percent is finished.

Key idea: Almost all fingerspelling confusion lives in a few families: the six thumb-position fists (A S T M N E), the rotation pairs (K/P, G/Q, U/H), and the circle pairs (D/F, C/O).

When ASL fingerspells, and when it does not

Fingerspelling is a bounded tool, not a fallback language. ASL fingerspells personal names, place names without established signs, brands and titles, technical vocabulary, and English words a signer wants to quote exactly; researchers who count find fingerspelling in somewhere between roughly one word in ten and one in three in adult signing, depending on register and topic. What fingerspelling is not is a substitute for learning signs: spelling out e-a-t instead of signing EAT marks a beginner instantly, and a whole conversation in spelled English is not ASL at all, merely handwriting in the air. There is also a lovely middle category. Some frequent spelled words have worn down into signs in their own right, called lexicalized fingerspelling and glossed with a number-sign prefix: the word JOB blurs into a J and a B with a twist, BACK becomes a compact bouncing shape, and the spelled NO fused so thoroughly, index and middle fingers snapping closed onto the thumb, that most signers no longer feel the N and O inside it. Language grinds its borrowings smooth, on the hands as in the mouth.

Key idea: Fingerspelling handles names, borrowings, and quotations, a solid minority of real signing, and its most frequent words wear down into lexicalized signs.

Learning to read spelling

Producing the alphabet is the easy half; reading it at speed is a skill that takes months, so start correctly now. Fluent readers do not decode letter by letter. They read the envelope of the word, its length, its tall letters and low letters, its first and last shapes, plus the signer's mouthing and the context, and the word snaps into place whole, exactly the way you are reading this printed sentence without inspecting individual letters. So when you practice receptively, resist the urge to chant letters in your head; watch the whole word, guess early, and let wrong guesses teach you. Practice with a partner if you have one, or with the endless free receptive drills online. Expect the famous plateau: everyone reads spelling more slowly than they produce it for a long while. Deaf conversation partners know this and will kindly slow down, sometimes with the gentle teasing that greets every learner. Take the teasing; it means you are in.

Key idea: Read fingerspelling by word shape, first and last letters, mouthing, and context, never letter by letter; receptive speed arrives months after productive speed, for everyone.

Common misconceptions

  • ASL is mostly fingerspelling. Spelling is a borrowing tool covering names and English loans; the language's heart is its native signs and grammar.
  • Faster spelling is better spelling. Clarity and rhythm beat speed; a smooth, steady word at half tempo is more readable than a blur.
  • You read fingerspelling by catching every letter. Fluent readers process word shapes and context; letter-by-letter decoding is the habit to unlearn.
  • The manual alphabet came from England with English. The one-handed alphabet descends from Spain via the Paris school and Clerc; Britain spells with two hands to this day.

The big picture

Numbers are the second alphabet of ASL, and in daily life you may use them even more than the first: your age, the time, prices, phone numbers, addresses, how many siblings, how many weeks until the Deaf coffee night. ASL's number system is elegant and fully native, with its own logic that does not copy English or hearing gesture, and that is exactly where beginners stumble: the counting you have done on your fingers since childhood is close enough to interfere and wrong enough to matter. This lesson describes the numbers 1 through 20 shape by shape, gives you the palm rules, and then shows how the same small kit builds ages, times, prices, and calendars. The standing caveat holds with extra force here, because number handshapes are compact and easy to mangle: check every description against a video chart, on Lifeprint or a similar dictionary, before your hands memorize an error.

One through five: palm toward you

Here is the first surprise. When counting plainly, the numbers 1 through 5 face the palm toward you, the signer, not toward your viewer. It feels backwards to hearing learners, who grew up flashing counts at other people, and it is among the most reliable markers separating trained from untrained hands. The shapes: 1 is the index finger up. 2 is index and middle, spread. 3, the famous one, is thumb, index, AND middle finger extended: not the hearing-culture three fingers without the thumb, which a Deaf viewer will read as 6 or as W depending on your fingers. 4 is four fingers up and spread, thumb folded across the palm. 5 is the whole open hand, all five digits spread. Practice 3 until the thumb joins without thought; that single habit will spare you years of corrections.

Key idea: Counting 1-5 runs palm-in, and ASL's 3 uses thumb, index, and middle finger, not the thumbless hearing-culture three.

Six through nine: the thumb walks the fingers

The numbers 6 through 9 flip the palm outward, toward your viewer, and use one beautiful rule: the thumb touches one fingertip while the other fingers stand tall and spread. Which fingertip? Walk inward from the pinky: 6 is thumb to pinky, 7 is thumb to ring finger, 8 is thumb to middle finger, 9 is thumb to index finger. Notice the consequences: 6 looks like the letter W with a closed pinky-side, and 9 is the same shape as the letter F. Context and position separate letters from numbers in real signing, so no one is confused. The mirror-logic is worth saying aloud as you drill: small finger, small number-step; the thumb walks from the pinky at 6 to the index at 9.

Key idea: For 6-9 the palm faces out and the thumb touches pinky, ring, middle, then index fingertips in order, with the other fingers standing tall.

Ten through twenty

10 is its own little celebration: an A handshape with the thumb pointing up, given a small twist or shake at the wrist, as if loosely rattling dice. The teens then split into two families. For 11 and 12, hold the palm in and flick: 11 flicks the index fingertip up off the thumb, twice; 12 flicks index and middle together. For 13, 14, and 15, the palm stays in and the fingers wag: 13 extends the thumb with index and middle, which bend and straighten at the knuckles; 14 wags all four fingers, thumb tucked; 15 wags all four with the thumb extended. For 16 through 19, most signers produce a compact twist compound: begin from the 10 idea and rotate the wrist outward while showing the 6, 7, 8, or 9 shape, so 16 reads as 10-then-6 in one motion, 17 as 10-then-7, and so on. Then 20 closes the set with a pecking bird: the index finger and thumb, extended like the letter G, snap closed together twice. Regional variants exist for several teens, which is one more reason the video chart is not optional.

Building bigger numbers

From 21 to 99, ASL says numbers the way English does: tens digit, then ones digit, so 34 is 3 then 4, signed smoothly palm out. A few decorations make the system fast and pretty. Identical doubles, 22, 33, 44, and kin, commonly tap the digit twice with a small sideways hop. Several numbers pairing digits from the 6-9 family, such as 67, 78, or 98, use a rocking motion, the wrist tilting from the first digit's shape to the second's, like a boat crossing a wave. And the twenties have quirks of their own in many regions, including a 25 with a wiggling middle finger; file the twenties under confirm on video. For the big landmarks, ASL borrows Roman elegance: 100 is the number 1 followed by a C handshape, the Roman centum surviving on American hands; 1,000 is 1 followed by a bent flat hand whose fingertips land in the opposite palm; 1,000,000 lands those fingertips twice, a thousand thousands. So 1,517 flows as 1, the thousand landing, 5, the C, 17: exactly the structure of the English phrase, built from pieces you now own.

Key idea: Two-digit numbers run tens-then-ones with doubles tapped and some pairs rocked; 100 and 1,000 use the C and the landing hand, Roman numerals hiding in plain sight.

Numbers at work: age, time, money, and incorporation

Now the payoff, because plain counting is rare; numbers usually ride inside a topic. Age: sign OLD by pulling the number from the chin, the spot ASL associates with age: the number handshape touches the chin and moves a few inches forward. AGE-7 is a 7 leaving the chin. (Many signers gloss this construction OLD-7.) Clock time: tap the back of your wrist with a bent index finger, where a watch would sit, then lift the hand and give the hour palm out: TIME-3 for three o'clock. Money: prices combine a number with CENT (an index finger launching forward off the forehead) or with DOLLAR; and for one through nine dollars, ASL does something delicious called incorporation: the number handshape itself performs a little twist in the air, palm turning inward, and that twist means dollars, so a single motion says 3-DOLLARS. Incorporation is everywhere in time vocabulary too: WEEK slides a 1 hand across the opposite flat palm, and to say three weeks you slide a 3 instead; MONTH runs a 1 down the back of the opposite upright index finger, and 2-MONTHS runs a 2 down the same track; the numbers snap into the sign like batteries into a toy. Phone numbers, addresses, and zip codes are spelled digit by digit, palm out, in steady grouped rhythm, 3-3-4 for American phone numbers, with a beat between groups.

Key idea: Numbers ride inside constructions: from the chin for age, off the wrist for clock time, twisting for dollars, and incorporated bodily into signs like WEEK and MONTH.

A short field guide to number errors

Five mistakes account for most beginner number trouble, so patrol for them. First, the thumbless 3, already discussed: in ASL that hand is not 3. Second, palm reversal: flashing 1-5 palm-out at your viewer like a referee, or curling 6-9 inward; remember counting 1-5 palm-in, 6-9 palm-out, while noting that in longer strings like phone numbers everything settles palm-out. Third, hesitation compounds: signing 34 as 3, long pause, 4 reads like two separate counts; glue the digits into one word-sized unit. Fourth, over-mouthing English: mouth the number naturally, do not silently shout THIRTY-FOUR in exaggerated syllables. Fifth, letter-number collisions: do not panic that 9 equals F and 6 resembles W; real signing disambiguates by context and position exactly as English survives the fact that too, two, and to share a sound. When in doubt, slow down and keep rhythm; rhythm is legibility.

Common misconceptions

  • ASL numbers copy hearing finger-counting. The systems differ from the first shape: palm direction rules, the thumb-inclusive 3, and the thumb-walking 6-9 are all native ASL design.

Module 4: Grammar on the Face and in Space

How ASL builds sentences: the non-manual grammar of eyebrows, head, and mouth; the grammatical use of the signing space for pronouns, verb agreement, and time; and topic-comment sentence structure with the classifier system that paints scenes.

Your Face Is the Sentence: Non-Manual Grammar

  • Produce the correct eyebrow, head, and body markers for yes/no questions, wh-questions, topics, negation, and conditionals, as described in text.
  • Explain why non-manual signals are obligatory grammar rather than optional emotion, using the intonation analogy.
  • Describe the major adverbial mouth morphemes (mm, th, cs, cha, oo, puffed cheeks) and what each adds to a verb.

The big picture

Say this English sentence aloud twice: You're coming. The first time, let your voice fall at the end, a plain statement. The second time, let it rise: You're coming? Same words, opposite meanings, and the difference was carried entirely by melody. Now you are ready for the single most important fact about ASL grammar: the language has melody too, and it lives on your face. Eyebrow position, head tilt, eye aperture, mouth shape, and body lean do in ASL what intonation, and a good deal of word order and vocabulary besides, do in English. Linguists call these non-manual signals, or non-manual markers, and you met them in Module 3 as the fifth parameter. Today they graduate from parameter to sentence engine.

Clear one obstacle first. Hearing learners often feel that grammatical facial expression is emoting, and they are embarrassed to do it; the result is the classic flat-faced beginner, signing vocabulary with no grammar attached, the visual equivalent of speaking in an unbroken robotic monotone. Deaf teachers spend more corrective effort on students' faces than on their hands. So internalize the reframe now: raised eyebrows in a yes/no question are not enthusiasm, they are syntax, exactly as your rising pitch in You're coming? was not excitement, it was a question mark. A blank face is not a neutral face. It is an ungrammatical one.

Questions: the eyebrows take over

ASL marks its two great question types with opposite eyebrow settings. For a yes/no question, one answerable with yes or no, the eyebrows go up, the head tips slightly forward, the eyes widen a little, and the final sign holds a beat longer than usual, leaving the floor open for the answer. Gloss notation writes the marker as a labeled line above the signs; in running text we will just name it. YOU DEAF, signed with brows up and head forward, asks Are you deaf? The identical hands with a neutral face simply assert You are deaf, which is a different social event entirely.

For a wh-question, one asking who, what, where, when, why, or how, the eyebrows go down, drawing together in a slight squint, with the head tilted and often a small shake, and the wh-sign itself typically lands at the end of the sentence: YOU LIVE WHERE, brows furrowed, asks Where do you live? Beginners find the furrow counterintuitive, expecting curiosity to look wide-eyed; think of it instead as the focused frown of someone digging for information. The two settings are not interchangeable, and mixing them up produces real confusion: brows-up with a wh-sign reads as an echo question or as rhetoric, which is in fact a third, real construction: fluent signers raise the brows on a wh-sign to pose a question they are about to answer themselves, as in ME TIRED WHY, brows up, then the answer: I am tired, and here is why: the baby cried all night.

Key idea: Yes/no questions raise the eyebrows and lean the head in; wh-questions lower the brows with the wh-sign usually final; raised brows on a wh-sign signal a rhetorical question the signer will answer.

Negation and affirmation: the head votes

ASL can negate with signs, NOT, NONE, NEVER, but its most economical negator is the head. A side-to-side headshake, begun at the verb and continued across the rest of the clause, negates the whole predicate: ME LIKE COFFEE signed with a headshake over LIKE COFFEE means I do not like coffee, no NOT required. The shake must cover the negated material; a single late wobble is the sign equivalent of mumbling. Its mirror twin is the affirmative head nod, which asserts and agrees, and which fluent signers layer over answers and confirmations. Two cultural notes belong here. First, the headshake is grammar, so watch for it: many a beginner has missed the entire meaning of a sentence by watching the hands say LIKE while the head said not. This is one more reason the community's eye-contact norm is absolute; the face is where the sentence lives. Second, ASL has specific negative signs with built-in faces: NOT-YET, from Module 3, wears its tongue and headshake, and NONE often comes with pursed lips. Face and hands negate together.

Key idea: A headshake spread across the predicate negates it without any negative sign, and a nod affirms; miss the head and you miss the sentence's polarity.

Topics and conditionals: eyebrows as punctuation

Module 1 promised the machinery behind topic-comment sentences, and here it is. To topicalize, a signer raises the eyebrows, tilts the head slightly back, holds the topic phrase for a beat, then lets face and head return to neutral for the comment. The raised-brow stretch is the spoken-language equivalent of As for X... So MOVIE THAT, brows up, ME SEE FINISH, brows neutral, means That movie? I have already seen it. The brow raise is the boundary marker, the audible comma of the language. Conditionals use the same marker with a different rhythm: the if-clause carries raised brows, often introduced by the signs IF or SUPPOSE, and the brows drop for the consequence: RAIN, brows up, GAME CANCEL, brows neutral: if it rains, the game is cancelled. Notice what you can now read: an ASL sentence's architecture is visible from across a room, before you catch a single handshape, in the rise and fall of the brows alone, exactly the way you can hear an English sentence's shape through a wall that muffles all its words.

Key idea: Raised brows held over a phrase mark it as topic or condition, then release for the comment or consequence: eyebrow punctuation that makes sentence structure visible at a distance.

The mouth as adverb: mouth morphemes

Now the fine machinery. While the lips often silently mouth fragments of English words, especially with fingerspelling, ASL also owns a native set of mouth gestures, mouth morphemes, that function as adverbs, modifying verbs they accompany. The classics: mm, lips pressed gently together, means regularly, smoothly, as usual, without trouble: DRIVE with mm is cruising along contentedly. Th, tongue tip visible between the teeth, means carelessly, sloppily: the same DRIVE with th is drifting across lanes with a soda in one hand. Cs, teeth clenched with the lips drawn back slightly, means very close, very recent: ARRIVE with cs is just barely arrived, moments ago. Cha, the mouth popping open as if saying that syllable, means huge: BUILDING with cha is a skyscraper. Oo, lips rounded small, means tiny, thin, or delicate, and puffed cheeks mean vast, fat, or a great many: a crowd signed with puffed cheeks is enormous. There are more, but these six will carry you far. Feel what has happened grammatically: manner adverbs that English says as separate words, carefully, recently, hugely, ride in ASL on a channel the hands never touch. A single clause can therefore say who did what to whom, that it is being asked as a question, and that it happened carelessly and recently, all at once, on parallel tracks. Linguists call this simultaneity, and it is one of the deep architectural differences between signed and spoken language.

A grammar you can practice in a mirror

Here is the honest section. Text has just described eyebrow settings and mouth shapes, and description genuinely helps: you now know what the markers mean, where they attach, and what to watch for in Deaf signing, which puts you ahead of most beginners on day one of a video course. But timing is everything in NMS: how early the brows rise, how long they hold, exactly when the headshake starts, and timing lives only in moving models. So practice like this. In a mirror, sign simple glossed sentences from this module and exaggerate the markers: YOU STUDENT with brows up; YOU LIVE WHERE with brows down; ME LIKE HOMEWORK with a full headshake. Exaggeration in private builds the muscle habits that will later relax into natural size. Then watch any captioned ASL video, Deaf vloggers, Gallaudet's public lectures, interpreted news, with the sound off and one assignment only: watch faces, not hands, and call out each question type, topic, and negation as it flies past. You will be shocked how much of the grammar you can already read.

Key idea: Learn the markers' meanings from text, but train their timing against mirrors and video: watch Deaf faces, not hands, and the sentence structure will surface.

Common misconceptions

  • Facial grammar is optional emotional coloring. NMS are obligatory syntax: the same signs with different brows are different sentence types, exactly as pitch turns an English statement into a question.
  • Wh-questions should look wide-eyed and curious. The grammatical marker is lowered, drawn-together brows; wide raised brows on a wh-sign signal a rhetorical question instead.
  • Negation requires the sign NOT. A headshake spread over the predicate negates by itself, and fluent signers use it constantly.
  • Mouth movements are just silent English. Some mouthing borrows English, but mouth morphemes like mm, th, and cha are native ASL adverbs with no English source.

The big picture

Every language needs a way to say who did what to whom, and to keep track of the cast once the story grows. English does it with word order and little words: he, she, them, to her. ASL does it with real estate. The signing space in front of a signer is not empty air; it is a stage, a filing system, and a grammar engine all at once. People and things get assigned locations in that space, and from then on the grammar literally revolves around them: points refer to them, verbs travel between them, and the whole sentence becomes a small piece of choreography whose paths mean who, whom, and when. Nothing in spoken language works quite like it, and nothing in ASL so reliably drops the jaws of new linguistics students. This lesson gives you the machinery in three parts: pronouns, agreeing verbs, and the time lines, with the storyteller's tool called role shift as the finale.

Pointing is a pronoun

Start with what is present. To say I or me, point to your own chest with an index finger. To say you, point at your conversation partner. To say he, she, or it, point at the person or thing, politely, with a relaxed index hand or a small nod of the hand toward them. Glosses write these points as IX, for index: IX-me, IX-you, IX-there. Turn the pointing index into a flat open palm and you have possession: palm on your chest is MY; palm turned toward your partner is YOUR. Sweep an index across a group for you-all or they; small arcs and specialized shapes give duals and trios, like TWO-OF-US, a 2-ish hand shuttling between you and your partner. Hearing newcomers sometimes flinch at all this pointing, since pointing at people is rude in hearing culture; in ASL it is simply the pronoun system, as neutral as the word she, and refusing to point is refusing to speak grammatically.

Now the brilliant part: what about people who are not in the room? ASL assigns them seats. Sign a referent's name or description once, then point to an empty spot: JOHN, point right. From that moment, the right-hand spot IS John for the rest of the conversation, and every later point to that spot means him. Your sister can live at a spot to your left, your boss slightly ahead, the new apartment further right. These assigned addresses are called loci, and the arrangement is a contract between you and your viewer: you must keep each referent at its locus, and your viewer will track the map effortlessly, because fluent signers' spatial memory for loci is superb. Reassign carelessly, putting John on the right in one sentence and the left in the next, and you have produced the spatial version of scrambled pronouns: your story dissolves into who-did-what confusion.

Key idea: ASL pronouns are points: at yourself, at your partner, at present things, and at loci, the empty-space addresses you assign to absent referents and must then keep consistent.

Verbs that travel: agreement in motion

Loci would be handy enough if they only anchored pointing. But ASL goes further: a large class of verbs, called indicating or directional verbs (linguists often say agreeing verbs), moves between loci, and the path itself marks subject and object. Take GIVE, a flattened-O hand as if holding something small. Move it from your chest toward your partner: I give you. Reverse the path, from your partner toward your chest: you give me. Move it from John's locus on the right to your sister's locus on the left: he gives her, and notice that your hands never signed HE or HER at all; the journey said it. The same logic runs through TELL, ASK, SHOW, SEND, PAY, HELP, ANSWER, and many more. Some inflect for plurals with a sweeping arc, give-to-all, or a repeated distribution, give-to-each. The verb is a little vehicle, and its itinerary is its grammar.

Not every verb gets a passport. Plain verbs, LIKE, LOVE, KNOW, THINK, many verbs anchored to the body, cannot move between loci; with them, you say who did what to whom with explicit pronouns and word order: IX-me LOVE IX-her. A third class, spatial verbs like PUT and MOVE, uses space literally rather than grammatically: the path shows where something physically went. Learning which class a verb belongs to is a normal part of vocabulary learning, like learning which English verbs are irregular; your video dictionary will show you each verb's behavior, and this course's rule of confirming everything on video applies doubly to anything that moves.

The lines of time

Space also tells time. Imagine a line running through your body from behind your shoulder to the space ahead: that is the main time line, and your body stands at now. Signs about the future move forward along it: WILL and TOMORROW travel ahead of the cheek; the far future arcs farther out. Signs about the past move backward: YESTERDAY and BEFORE gesture over the shoulder; long-ago reaches farther back. NOW drops both hands right where you stand. This is why Module 1 could tell you that ASL puts time first and skips tense endings: a sentence opens by placing itself on the line, YESTERDAY or NEXT-WEEK or LONG-AGO, and every verb after that inherits the setting, the way a novel's chapter heading dates everything in the chapter. Other lines organize other calendars: a left-to-right line across the front of the body carries sequences like the days of the week or a row of appointments, earliest on one side, marching across; durations stretch between two hands. None of this is mime. It is a coordinate system, as conventional as a calendar grid, and once you know it, a signer's plans are visible in the air: you can watch next week sit farther from the body than tomorrow.

Key idea: Time is spatial: the front-back line through the body puts the future ahead and the past behind, with time signs opening a sentence and setting its tense for everything that follows.

Role shift: becoming the quotation

One more spatial tool, and it is the one that makes ASL storytelling famous. When an English speaker reports dialogue, they say: she said, quote... An ASL signer does something more cinematic: they step into the character. To quote your mother scolding you, you shift your shoulders and head slightly toward your mother's locus, let your gaze become her gaze, take on a flavor of her expression, and sign her words as her, from her position. Shift back, or to the other side, and you are yourself again, or the other character. This is role shift, also called constructed dialogue or constructed action, and it is fully grammatical machinery, not acting for decoration: the shoulder orientation and eye gaze mark whose words or actions these are, as rigorously as English quotation marks, and conversations of three characters can be kept perfectly distinct by three body angles. Children's stories in ASL are tours de force of role shift, the teller becoming wolf, pig, and door in turn. You will not produce good role shift from a paragraph, and this course will not pretend otherwise; but from this paragraph you can learn to read it, and to stop wondering why the signer on stage seems to keep turning slightly left and right. They are switching speakers. The turn is the quotation mark.

Key idea: Role shift quotes people by shifting the body and gaze toward their locus and signing from their perspective, a grammatical quotation system that powers ASL storytelling.

Putting the stage to work

Take stock of the system you have just toured, because its parts interlock beautifully. Loci give every referent an address. Points are pronouns that visit the addresses. Indicating verbs commute between addresses, marking subject and object by their routes. The time lines date the whole scene. Role shift lets the signer step into any address and speak from inside it. One three-second stretch of fluent signing can, therefore, set up a boss on the right and a coworker on the left, put the whole affair last week, and show the boss asking the coworker a question, sarcastically, with the asker's own face, using two signs and a great deal of grammar that never touched the hands. That density, meaning layered on simultaneous spatial channels, is what researchers mean when they say sign languages exploit the visual medium rather than merely surviving in it. And it is learnable. Deaf children pick it up on the ordinary schedule, and adult learners get there through video models, feedback, and patient hours; your job from this lesson is to arrive at that practice already knowing what the space is doing.

Key idea: Loci, indexing, traveling verbs, time lines, and role shift interlock into one spatial grammar that layers who, whom, when, and quotation into a few seconds of signing.

Common misconceptions

  • Pointing at people is rude in ASL. Indexing is the pronoun system; withholding it is not politeness but broken grammar. Hearing etiquette does not transfer.
  • Directional verbs are optional shortcuts. For indicating verbs, the path IS the agreement marking; signing GIVE without a meaningful path while omitting pronouns leaves who-gave-to-whom unsaid.
  • All verbs can move between loci. Plain verbs like LOVE, LIKE, and KNOW cannot; they need explicit pronouns, and verb class must be learned per verb.
  • Role shift is theatrical embellishment. The body turn and gaze change are grammatical quotation marks; without them, reported speech and the signer's own words blur together.

The big picture

You now hold all the parts: parameters to build signs, a face full of grammar, and a stage with addresses and time lines. This lesson assembles them into sentences, and then hands you the tool that turns sentences into scenes. The first half covers ASL word order, which is more flexible than English but principled, organized around the pattern named in this course's very first gloss: time, then topic, then comment. The second half introduces classifiers, the handshape system that lets a signer place a car, a person, a cat, and a winding road into the air and move them like pieces on a living map. Classifiers are where ASL stops resembling anything you have met in a spoken language, and where Deaf storytelling gets its cinema. Text can teach you the system's logic and its major pieces, and, as always, the moving reality belongs to video and the classroom.

Word order: the templates

ASL's basic order for a plain transitive sentence is subject, verb, object, the same skeleton as English: ME LIKE PIZZA. If that surprises you after all this course's talk of difference, good: the differences are systematic, not chaotic. The first is the time-first rule you already know: YESTERDAY ME EAT PIZZA, with tense set once up front. The second is topicalization, which you can now fully understand: take the thing the sentence is about, move it to the front, and mark it with raised brows and a beat: PIZZA, brows up, ME LIKE, brows neutral. That version answers a slightly different conversational question than the SVO version does; it is the difference between I like pizza and As for pizza? I like it. Object-first sentences with topic marking are everywhere in natural signing, which is why this course drilled the eyebrow machinery before the word order. Third, wh-signs gravitate to the end: YOU LIVE WHERE. Fourth, ASL routinely drops what context has established: once you and your partner are clearly discussing you, the pronoun can vanish, LIVE WHERE, exactly as many spoken languages drop understood subjects. Put together, a highly natural ASL utterance about last weekend might gloss as: WEEKEND, brows up, ME DO-DO WHAT, brows up rhetorically, HIKE MOUNTAIN. Weekend? What did I do? Hiked a mountain. Three little templates, one fluent paragraph.

Key idea: ASL sentences run time first, topic (brow-raised) next, comment last, with SVO available, wh-signs final, and established referents freely dropped.

What classifiers are

Now the scene-painting tool. A classifier is a handshape that stands for a whole class of referents, a vehicle, an upright person, a flat surface, a small round thing, and that then moves through signing space to show what the referent did: where it went, how it moved, where it sits relative to everything else. The crucial rule comes first: a classifier is a pronoun-like stand-in, so you must identify the noun before you use it. Sign CAR, then raise the vehicle classifier, and from that moment the handshape IS the car. Skip the noun and your viewer watches an unidentified object float through space, grammatical nonsense. Glosses write classifiers as CL plus the handshape's name: CL:3 for the vehicle classifier, CL:1 for a person.

Meet the core cast. CL:3, the thumb-up 3 hand held sideways, is the vehicle classifier: cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats. Drive it smoothly forward and the car cruises; swerve it and the car swerves; tip it and the boat rocks. CL:1, an upright index finger, is a single person walking, approaching, standing; two of them can meet, pass, or stroll together. CL:V bent, the two fingers of a V hooked downward, is a seated person or a small animal's legs; perch it on the other arm and the cat sits on the fence. CL:C, the C hand, grips cylindrical things, cups, poles, thick cables. CL:B, the flat hand, is a surface: a table, a wall, a bed, a sheet of paper, and doubled it makes floors and shelves. CL:F, the F ring, holds small round things: coins, buttons, eyes. The claw-5, fingers spread and hooked, handles masses and crowds: a claw-5 swept across space is a huge audience; two of them tumbling are boiling clouds. Each is a category, not a single word, and context plus the previously signed noun tells the viewer which member of the category is on stage.

Key idea: Classifiers are handshapes standing for classes of referents, always introduced by their noun first: CL:3 vehicles, CL:1 upright people, bent-V seated beings, CL:C cylinders, CL:B flat surfaces, CL:F small round things, claw-5 masses.

Verbs of motion and location: the scene comes alive

Here is why linguists give classifiers their own chapter. Once classifiers are on stage, ASL builds what are called classifier predicates, or verbs of motion and location, and these constructions pack path, manner, speed, and spatial arrangement into a single flowing unit. English needs a sentence like: the car wound slowly up the mountain road and parked next to a tree. An ASL rendering: sign MOUNTAIN, sign ROAD tracing its rise, sign TREE and plant the non-dominant forearm upright with a spread 5 hand, the standing-tree form, then bring CL:3 onto the road and drive it upward in slow switchbacks, cheeks perhaps puffed for laboring effort, until it settles beside the tree-arm. One construction, maybe four seconds, and the viewer has not been told about the scene; they have watched it. Notice the grammar hiding in the choreography: the slow winding movement is the adverb, the puffed cheeks are the manner, the final position by the tree is the locative phrase, and the whole layout obeys the loci logic of the last lesson. Classifier predicates also report arrangement: a CL:B flat hand can place papers across a desk one by one, messy or aligned; rows of CL:1 fingers become people standing in line, and the spacing of your hands says how long the line is. This is the machinery behind the classifier stories you met in Module 2's art lesson, and behind everyday miracles like giving driving directions that the listener can practically ride along.

Key idea: Classifier predicates fuse path, manner, and location into single constructions, letting a signer show a scene, car winding uphill, cat on the fence, line out the door, rather than describe it.

Reading classifier glosses

Because this is a text course, you should learn to read classifier scenes on the page, a skill you will use with every ASL textbook and linguistics article afterward. A glossed scene might run: TREE (plant forearm), CAR, CL:3 wind-uphill, park-next-to-tree. Read it in layers. First find the nouns, TREE, CAR: they cast the scene. Then read each CL as its cast member, and the hyphenated verb tail as the choreography. Ask where each classifier starts, what path it takes, and where it ends relative to the other hand, because in classifier land, relative position is meaning: above, beside, inside, and facing are all read literally off the hands. Two-handed classifier scenes assign one referent per hand, ground on the non-dominant hand, figure on the dominant, the cat (bent-V) on the fence (B hand), the person (CL:1) approaching the wall (B hand), and the dominant hand does the moving. That figure-ground division of labor is consistent across the language and will feel natural within a week of video study.

What text can and cannot do here

Time for this course's standing honesty, applied to its most visual topic. What you have gained from this lesson is real: you know what classifiers are, the major handshapes and their classes, the noun-first rule, the figure-ground convention, and how to read glossed scenes, which is more conceptual grounding than many students bring to their first signing class. What you cannot get here is the production skill: classifier work is judged by fluent eyes on precision of path, orientation, and timing, and self-taught classifier habits are notoriously hard to unlearn. So make classifiers your headline reason to seek video and live instruction. Watch Deaf storytellers, there are wonderful classifier-heavy performances all over the internet, with new eyes: name the classifiers as they appear, spot the noun that licensed each one, watch the non-dominant hand quietly holding the world in place. You are no longer watching magic. You are reading grammar, and reading it is the doorway to one day performing it.

Common misconceptions

  • ASL word order is free-for-all. The templates are strict in their own terms: time first, topics brow-marked up front, wh-signs final, SVO as the plain backbone.

First Signs: Greetings, People, and Politeness

The big picture

This is the lesson where the course finally hands you vocabulary, and so this is the lesson where its honesty contract matters most. Here is the contract, one more time, in its strongest form: the descriptions below are precise maps, written in the parameter language you learned in Module 3, and a map is not the territory. Reading that PLEASE is a flat hand circling on the chest will let you recognize the sign instantly and form a close draft of it; it cannot show you the circle's exact size, the relaxed wrist, or the accompanying warmth of the face. So use this lesson in two passes. First pass: read each recipe slowly, form the sign as you read, and say the gloss aloud. Second pass, the same day if you can: look up every one of these signs in a free video dictionary, Lifeprint's ASL University and Handspeak both index them alphabetically, and correct your draft against the moving original. Signs learned wrong and practiced wrong must later be unlearned, and unlearning is expensive. Confirm early, confirm always.

A note on reading the recipes: assume your dominant hand acts and your palm faces where stated; handshapes use the letter and number names from Module 3; and every sign lands more gently than beginners expect. ASL at conversational volume is relaxed, economical, and close to the body. Save your force for emphasis, which is real but occasional, exactly like shouting.

Greetings and openers

HELLO: a flat B hand, palm out, fingertips touching near the temple or forehead, arcs a few inches out and away, a loose, friendly salute. Casual alternative: simply wave, exactly the wave you already own; glossed HI. GOOD: fingertips of a flat hand touch the chin or lips, then the hand drops forward to land palm-up, often onto the upturned non-dominant palm; think of offering something pleasant from your lips. MORNING: lay your non-dominant hand in the crook of your dominant elbow; the dominant forearm, palm up, rises like the sun coming over the horizon of your other arm. NIGHT: the horizon reverses: the non-dominant arm lies flat, and the dominant hand, bent at the knuckles, arcs down over its edge, the sun setting past the world's rim. Combine as GOOD MORNING and GOOD NIGHT, exactly as in English. AFTERNOON: the dominant flat hand, forearm resting on the back of the flat non-dominant hand, tilts forward at roughly forty-five degrees, the sun partway down the sky. These arm-horizon signs are small pieces of visual poetry, and they are also your first compounds: two ideas, GOOD plus a time of day, gluing into a greeting.

Key idea: The greeting set (HELLO, HI, GOOD, MORNING, AFTERNOON, NIGHT) is built on two images, a salute and the sun crossing an arm-horizon, and compounds exactly as English does.

Courtesy: the social oil

THANK-YOU: a flat hand, fingertips at the chin or lips, arcs forward and slightly down toward the person you thank, palm up at the end; the old etymology is a kiss of gratitude sent outward. Do not snap it; let it float. PLEASE: a flat hand, palm on the center of your chest, rubs one or two slow circles. SORRY: make an A fist, palm toward you, and circle it on your chest, the same orbit as PLEASE but with a fist and a sorry face; the face is half the apology. EXCUSE-ME: the fingertips of a slightly bent hand brush twice across the upturned non-dominant palm, as if sweeping a small offense away; use it squeezing past people or interrupting. YES: an S fist, held up, bobs at the wrist, a head nodding in miniature. NO: the index and middle fingers, extended together, snap down to meet the thumb, a small beak closing, once for a plain no, twice quickly for a casual one; pair it with the negative headshake from Module 4, and notice the origin: it is the fingerspelled N and O fused into a single motion, lexicalized spelling exactly as Lesson 7 promised. NICE: the flat dominant palm slides smoothly outward across the upturned flat non-dominant palm, wiping a surface clean; the same sign, context depending, means CLEAN.

Key idea: Courtesy signs live at the chin and chest, THANK-YOU arcing outward, PLEASE and SORRY circling the heart, and NO is a lexicalized N-O beak that closes with the headshake.

Who you are: identity signs

DEAF: the extended index finger touches just below the ear, then moves to touch beside the mouth; some signers travel mouth to ear instead, and both are standard. The sign simply marks ear and mouth, the two territories at issue, with no negativity built in; remember from Module 2 that DEAF is a proud identity label. HEARING: the index finger, held sideways in front of the lips, rolls forward in small circles, words tumbling out of a talking mouth; notice the wit: hearing people are defined by their talking. HARD-OF-HEARING: an H handshape bounces gently down, up, and down again, sliding a little sideways, sketching the initials H-H in the air. STUDENT: begin with LEARN, the open 5 hand closing to a flattened O as it lifts off the upturned non-dominant palm toward your forehead, knowledge scooped from the page into the head, then finish with the person ending: both flat hands, palms facing each other, slide straight down the sides of your torso, outlining a person. TEACHER: begin with TEACH, both flattened-O hands at the temples pushing forward twice, knowledge pressed outward from the head, then add the same person ending. NAME: both hands make the H shape; the dominant H taps down across the non-dominant H, the two fingers crossing like the sticks of a signpost, twice. MEET: both index fingers point up, palms facing each other, and the hands approach until the knuckles meet, two small people coming face to face. Now compound: NICE MEET YOU, sliding palm, meeting fingers, a point at your partner, is the standard pleasure-to-meet-you, and you will use it within minutes of entering any signing space.

Key idea: Identity signs are little pictures with the culture folded in: DEAF marks ear and mouth neutrally, HEARING pins talkers to their chatter, and STUDENT and TEACHER build from LEARN and TEACH plus the person outline.

Classroom survival kit

These are the signs that keep you afloat in your first real class, and Deaf teachers wish every beginner arrived owning them. AGAIN: the dominant hand, bent at the big knuckles, flips over to land its fingertips in the upturned non-dominant palm; it means again or repeat, and produced with raised brows it politely requests one more time. SLOW: the dominant flat hand drags slowly up the back of the non-dominant hand, from fingers toward wrist, at exactly the speed it names. PLEASE SLOW AGAIN will be your best friend; say it without shame. UNDERSTAND: a fist held at the forehead flicks its index finger upward, the light coming on; with a headshake, it becomes DON'T-UNDERSTAND, and honesty about not understanding is a cultural virtue, far preferred to the fake nod, which Deaf conversation partners detect instantly and mistrust. KNOW: the fingertips of a bent hand tap the side of the forehead; flip the hand away with a headshake for DON'T-KNOW. SIGN, the verb of this whole course: both index fingers extended and pointing up-ish, the hands roll in alternating circles toward your body in front of your chest, language churning in the space where it lives. PRACTICE: the knuckles of an A fist rub back and forth along the extended non-dominant index finger, polishing the skill. WANT: both open, slightly clawed hands, palms up in front of you, pull back toward your body. HELP: the non-dominant flat palm holds a dominant thumbs-up A fist, and the whole assembly rises; and remember from Module 4 that HELP travels: lifted toward you it asks help me, lifted toward your partner it offers help you. Direction is grammar, even in the survival kit.

Key idea: The survival kit, AGAIN, SLOW, UNDERSTAND and its negative, KNOW, SIGN, PRACTICE, WANT, HELP, keeps a beginner honest and afloat, and its verbs already carry the directional grammar of Module 4.

Family: the forehead-chin code

Family vocabulary hides a beautiful historical pattern. Male family signs live at the forehead; female family signs live at the chin and jaw. The usual explanation reaches back to nineteenth-century dress: boys and men tipped the brims of caps, worn at the brow; girls and women tied bonnet strings, knotted along the jaw. Whatever its precise origin, the pattern is productive and worth banking. MOTHER: an open 5 hand, thumb taps the chin. FATHER: the same open 5 hand, thumb taps the forehead. Double the tap or wiggle the fingers slightly and the sign warms informally, the difference between mother and mom. GIRL: the thumb of an A fist traces a short line down the jaw, the bonnet string. BOY: a flattened O opens and closes at the brow, gripping the cap brim. SISTER: GIRL at the jaw, then both hands in L-ish index shapes, the dominant dropping to land on the non-dominant, the two-of-the-same ending; BROTHER runs the same ending after BOY at the forehead. BABY: your arms cradle an invisible infant and rock gently side to side. FAMILY: both F hands, the letter initializing the concept, touch at the thumbs and index fingers, then arc outward and around until the pinky sides meet, enclosing the whole group in a circle. FRIEND: the index fingers hook, dominant over non-dominant, then reverse the hook, two lives linked from both directions.

Key idea: Family signs run on the forehead-chin gender code, cap brim above and bonnet string below, with MOTHER and FATHER as the master pair and FAMILY drawing its circle around everyone.

How to practice a described vocabulary

Close with method, because thirty signs read in one sitting will evaporate by morning without it. First, space your practice: form each sign today, tomorrow, in three days, and in a week; spaced retrieval is the strongest learning tool this course can hand you. Second, practice in sentences, not lists, using the grammar you own: YOU STUDENT YOU, brows up; ME WANT PRACTICE; MOTHER FATHER MEET TEACHER. Even alone, sentence practice binds vocabulary to grammar. Third, gloss your day quietly: as you pour coffee, think WANT DRINK; as you leave, think GOOD NIGHT. Fourth, and not optional: confirm all of it on video, today's signs against a dictionary, then your own hands against a mirror or phone camera. And when you reach a signing class or a Deaf event and someone gently reshapes your PLEASE circle or slows your THANK-YOU, receive it as the gift it is. In this culture, correction is investment. It means someone decided you were worth teaching.

Key idea: Space your retrieval, drill in sentences rather than lists, gloss your daily life, verify everything on video, and treat live correction as the compliment it is.

Common misconceptions

  • A well-written description can replace the video. It cannot: size, tension, timing, and facial warmth live only in moving models, which is why every section of this lesson ends by sending you to one.
  • Bigger, firmer signing is clearer signing. Conversational ASL is relaxed and close to the body; oversized force reads as shouting, not clarity.
  • The fake nod is polite. Nodding through incomprehension is the beginner's worst habit; sign DON'T-UNDERSTAND, PLEASE SLOW AGAIN, and earn the trust that honesty buys.
  • Family signs are arbitrary. The forehead-chin gender pattern organizes the whole set; learn the code once and a dozen signs come pre-sorted.

The big picture

Vocabulary gets you into a conversation; norms keep you welcome in it. This lesson finishes your starter lexicon, question words, feelings, and daily needs, and then teaches the part of ASL no dictionary can show: how conversation itself works in the Deaf world. How do you get the attention of someone who cannot hear you approach? What do your eyes owe the person signing to you? What do you do when two people are signing across the hallway you need to walk down? Hearing intuitions answer all three questions wrongly. The good news is that the real rules are few, learnable, and deeply logical once you think visually, and arriving with them mastered marks you as a guest who did the homework. As ever: every sign recipe below is a draft to be confirmed on video, and every norm below is real, drawn from the community's own etiquette teaching.

The question words

You know from Module 4 that wh-signs live at sentence end under lowered brows; here are the signs themselves. WHO: the thumb of an L-ish hand rests on the chin while the index finger bends and straightens twice, palm sideways. WHAT: both open hands, palms up in front of you, shake slightly side to side, the universal-feeling but fully conventional open question. WHERE: the index finger, pointing up, wags side to side like a small windshield wiper. WHEN: the non-dominant index finger stands still, pointing up; the dominant index circles it once and lands on its fingertip, a calendar date being circled. WHY: the fingertips touch the forehead, then the hand pulls away and down, melting into a Y handshape, thought drawn out of the head into a question. HOW: both hands bend at the knuckles, backs of the fingers pressed together, then roll forward and apart until the palms open upward, something being turned over to see how it works. WHICH: two thumbs-up A hands alternate rising and falling, weighing options on invisible scales. Drill each with the furrowed wh-face attached from the first repetition; a question word with naked brows is only half learned. Then build the sentences you will actually use: YOU NAME WHAT. YOU LIVE WHERE. CLASS WHEN. YOU LEARN SIGN WHY, and enjoy that last one, because the answer is this course.

Key idea: The wh-set (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW, WHICH) is small and pictorial, sits at sentence end, and must be drilled with the lowered-brow marking welded on.

Feelings and needs

Feelings first, because Deaf conversation asks about them early and honestly. HAPPY: one or both flat hands brush upward off the chest, twice, joy rising; the face must rise with it. SAD: both open 5 hands, palms in, slide down in front of the face as the face falls with them. ANGRY: a claw hand in front of the face draws sharply up or crooks its fingers as the brows knot; check this one on video especially, since near-neighbors differ regionally. TIRED: the fingertips of both bent hands rest at the collarbones, then the hands rotate downward, the body's scaffolding sagging; let the shoulders drop, since the sag is the sign. SICK: the middle finger of an open 8 hand touches the forehead while the matching hand touches the stomach, illness marked at head and gut. FINE: an open 5 hand, thumb touching mid-chest, taps once or twice, composure standing upright. FEEL: the middle finger of an open 8 brushes up the chest, the antenna of the emotional weather report; YOU FEEL WHAT is a caring and common question.

Now needs, the vocabulary of getting through a day. EAT: a flattened O taps the lips, food to mouth; doubled, it becomes the noun FOOD. DRINK: a C hand tips toward the mouth, the cup you met in Lesson 1. WATER: a W handshape, index-finger side tapping the chin twice. MORE: the fingertips of two flattened O hands tap together twice in front of you. FINISH: both open 5 hands, palms toward you, flip briskly outward and down, done and dusted; you will see fluent signers use it constantly, as verb, as aspect marker, and as the gentle interjection meaning stop that. BATHROOM: a T fist shakes side to side at chest height, and asking is culturally unremarkable. NEED: an X hand, the crooked index finger, bends firmly downward at the wrist; repeated softly it reads as should, pressed once and hard it reads as must. LIKE: the thumb and middle finger of an open 8 rest on the chest and pull off it, closing together, drawing a thread of preference out of the heart; with the headshake, don't-like. Between feelings and needs you can now report your inner life, YOU HUNGRY, brows up; ME TIRED, ME WANT EAT, which is, be honest, most of what anyone says before coffee.

Key idea: Feeling signs recruit the whole body and face (HAPPY rises, SAD falls, TIRED sags), and the needs set (EAT, DRINK, WATER, MORE, FINISH, BATHROOM, NEED, LIKE) runs your day in a dozen signs.

Getting attention, the right ways

Now the norms, starting with the one hearing people most fear getting wrong. You cannot call a Deaf person's name across a room, so the community long ago engineered polite alternatives, ranked by situation. Closest range: a gentle tap, two light touches with fingertips, on the shoulder or upper arm, and only there: never the head, face, chest, or a hand mid-sign, and never a poke. Middle range: a wave, small and low in the person's peripheral vision, rising and widening only as needed; the frantic full-arm flail is for emergencies and comedy. Shared surfaces: a light thump on the table transmits a vibration everyone touching the table feels, perfect for dinner conversation; on a wooden floor, a firm foot tap can carry the same way. Whole rooms: flick the lights once or twice, the standard way to gather a signing crowd's eyes, used in Deaf schools, clubs, and theaters for generations. And through people: if your target is looking away and someone nearer is not, it is normal to ask the nearer person, with a point and a wave, to relay your wave along. What is rude: throwing things to get attention, stomping like thunder for one person at close range, grabbing anyone's hands, and, the classic hearing blunder, walking up and touching before you are visible, which startles; approach into view first when you can.

Key idea: Attention-getting is engineered and ranked: gentle shoulder taps, peripheral waves, table vibrations, and light flicks for rooms; pokes, grabs, thrown objects, and invisible approaches are the violations.

Eyes, hallways, and goodbyes

Eye contact in signed conversation is not a courtesy; it is the channel itself. When someone signs to you, your eyes on them ARE your listening, and looking away mid-sentence, at your phone, at a passerby, at your own hands, does not read as distraction; it reads as walking off mid-sentence, because functionally it is. Train yourself to hold the gaze and to back-channel with your face and small nods, the visual mm-hm, so the signer knows the channel is live. If you truly must look away, signal first, a raised finger, a quick HOLD-ON, exactly as you would excuse yourself aloud. Next, the hallway problem: two people are signing across the path you need to travel. Do not stop and wait like a mime at a wall, and do not crouch into an apologetic scuttle. Walk through at a normal pace, a brief EXCUSE-ME or a small duck of the head as you pass; signers' conversations survive a moving body for a half second, and the community finds the elaborate hearing hesitation genuinely funnier than the crossing. Finally, departures. You know from Module 2 that information is shared and goodbyes are long: when you leave a Deaf gathering, tell the people you were with that you are going, roughly why or where, and expect the farewell to travel the room, gathering hugs and one-more-stories as it goes. Slipping out silently, the hearing ghost exit, reads as a small breach: the group should not have to wonder where you went.

Key idea: Your eyes are the channel (hold them, back-channel, signal before looking away), walk briskly between signers with a light EXCUSE-ME, and never ghost a Deaf gathering: announce, then say the long goodbye.

Name signs and introducing yourself

Last, the etiquette closest to your own identity. A name sign is a personal sign standing for an individual, and the linguist Samuel Supalla documented the system's two families: arbitrary name signs, typically the person's initial tapped at a neutral location, and descriptive name signs, built from a trait, the cowlick, the dimples, the famous laugh. Two rules govern them absolutely. Name signs are given, not self-invented: yours will come, if it comes, from Deaf people who know you, often after months, and receiving one is a small citizenship ceremony. And name signs are used to refer, not to address: you sign someone's name sign to mention them, but to get their attention you use the taps and waves above, not their name sign repeated at them. Until you have one, you are your fingerspelled name, and that is entirely respectable. So here, assembled from everything you own, is your introduction, the first paragraph of your signing life: HELLO. ME NAME fs-YOUR-NAME. ME HEARING. ME STUDENT, ME LEARN SIGN. NICE MEET YOU. Sign it slowly, brows honest, fingerspelling steady, and finish with the point at your new acquaintance. Somewhere in your future there is a Deaf person who will answer that little speech with a smile, a slowed reply, and the beginning of your real education. This lesson exists to get you to that moment without stepping on anything on the way in.

Key idea: Name signs are gifts from Deaf people, used for reference rather than address, and until one arrives you introduce yourself with fingerspelling and the six-line self-introduction this module has now fully equipped.

Common misconceptions

  • Tapping a stranger to get attention is invasive. The gentle shoulder or upper-arm tap is standard, expected, and polite; the violations are pokes, grabs, head touches, and invisible approaches.
  • Politeness means waiting until two signers finish before passing. Walk through promptly with a light excuse; the long hearing hover is the awkward choice, not the crossing.
  • Glancing at your phone while watching signing is minor. Breaking gaze breaks the channel; it reads as abandoning the conversation mid-sentence.
  • You can design your own name sign and announce it. Name signs are conferred by Deaf people who know you; introducing a self-invented one is a faux pas the community will gently, or not so gently, correct.

Module 6: Variation, Careers, and Your Road In

The living breadth of the language, regional accents, generational change, Black ASL, tactile and ProTactile signing, and the road ahead: the interpreting profession, careers connected to ASL, and the learner's respectful path into video resources, Deaf-taught classes, and community.

One Language, Many Accents: Variation and Black ASL

  • Describe regional, generational, and register variation in ASL and explain why residential schools acted as dialect nurseries.

The big picture

Put five Deaf adults from five states at one table and ask them to sign BIRTHDAY, and you may see five different signs, followed by delighted comparison, teasing, and stories about who learned what where. Nobody at that table thinks anyone is signing wrong. Languages breathe, and a healthy language varies: by region, by generation, by community, by occasion. English speakers know this from soda, pop, and coke; ASL signers know it from BIRTHDAY, PICNIC, and HALLOWEEN, three of the famously variable signs. This lesson tours the variation, and then gives the fullest treatment in this course to its most important chapter: Black ASL, a distinct variety born from the segregated schooling of Black deaf children, documented by Deaf scholars, and carried today with pride. We close with the signing of DeafBlind communities, tactile ASL and the ProTactile movement, and with a level-headed look at ASL beyond the borders of the United States.

Regional accents and school trees

Why does ASL vary by region? Remember how the language spreads: not primarily through families, since most deaf children have hearing parents, but through schools. For a century and a half, each state's residential school was a dialect nursery: children arrived, learned the language from schoolmates and Deaf staff, developed local forms, and carried them into the state's adult community. Signs for local referents and everyday items diverged school by school, which is why lexical variation clusters by state and why Deaf adults can often guess where a stranger grew up from a handful of signs. The variation is mostly lexical, different signs for the same thing, with smaller differences in rhythm and style; the grammar you learned in Module 4 holds everywhere. There are also regional reputations, lovingly exaggerated: fast, clipped signing in New York, an unhurried roll in the South. For you the learner, the policy is simple: learn the variant your local community and teacher use, recognize others without anxiety, and treat a dictionary's multiple entries not as errors but as a map of the country.

Key idea: ASL varies chiefly by school lineage: residential schools incubated regional vocabularies, so variation clusters by state, sits mostly in the lexicon, and signals origin rather than error.

Time and register

Variation also runs along the axis of age. Watch films of signers born in the nineteenth century, the Veditz generation, and you will see more two-handed forms, more fingerspelling in some functions, and signs your dictionary lists as older variants; Nancy Frishberg's research from Lesson 1 showed the systematic drift, signs moving toward the center of the signing space, becoming more compact and symmetrical. Today's young signers coin at internet speed: technology vocabulary, slang, and playful blends spread through Deaf social media in weeks. Neither end of the spectrum is more correct; a language with visible generations is a language with a long memory and a working future. Register varies too, exactly as your Module 2 lessons on culture would predict. Formal platform signing, a lecture, a ceremony, a courtroom through an interpreter, is larger, slower, more two-handed, angled for a big room. Casual signing among friends shrinks, speeds up, drops formality, and whispers: tiny signs, low, near the body, screened from the room, while emphatic signing enlarges into shouting. You met this scale in Lesson 1; now you can hear it as register, the same competence English speakers exercise between a toast and a text message.

Key idea: Generational variation shows the language's history in motion, and register scales signing from platform-large to whisper-small; both are competence, not confusion.

Black ASL: a history written in schools

Now the chapter every serious student of ASL must know. American school segregation did not spare deaf children. Across the South, Black deaf children were educated, when they were educated at all, in separate schools and separate departments: North Carolina opened the country's first school for Black deaf children in 1869, and over the following decades seventeen states ran segregated programs. Integration came slowly even after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954; the last separate Black deaf school program did not close until 1978, within living memory. Segregation was an injustice built on injustice, and it had a linguistic consequence: generations of Black deaf children acquired and transmitted the language in their own communities, largely apart from white signers, and a distinct variety took root, Black ASL.

There is a bitter historical irony inside this story. When oralism swept white deaf education after Milan, many Black deaf schools were left out of the expensive oral experiment, because the authorities who underfunded them did not consider them worth converting. The result: sign language remained the medium of instruction in many Black deaf schools long after white schools banned it, and Black ASL preserved older, richer signing traditions that oralism starved elsewhere. Discrimination intended as neglect accidentally sheltered the language. The community that was given less kept more.

Key idea: Black ASL arose from segregated deaf schooling, first school 1869, last closed 1978, and because oralism was imposed less on Black schools, the variety preserved older sign-rich traditions.

Black ASL today: features, scholarship, pride

For decades, Black ASL lived in community knowledge and anecdote; then Deaf scholarship caught up. The Black ASL Project, led by Carolyn McCaskill, a Deaf professor at Gallaudet, with colleagues Ceil Lucas, Robert Bayley, and Joseph Hill, filmed and analyzed signers across six southern states, publishing The Hidden Treasure of Black ASL in 2011, the first full linguistic description of the variety. The documented tendencies, and they are tendencies, not badges every signer wears, include: a larger signing space; more two-handed versions of signs that other varieties often reduce to one hand; more repetition; a higher rate of certain older forms, the preserved inheritance you just read about; distinctive vocabulary; and, among younger signers, loans and idioms from African American English carried in through mouthing and translation. McCaskill herself tells of arriving at a newly integrated school and finding she could barely follow the white students' signing: same language, different world. Today Black ASL is carried with open pride, visible in Deaf social media, poetry, and performance, and organized community life runs through institutions like National Black Deaf Advocates, founded in 1982. For you, the respectful stance is the one linguistics always teaches: Black ASL is not slang or a simplified offshoot; it is a rule-governed variety of ASL with its own history, and its signers are the owners of when and how it is used.

Signing you can feel: tactile ASL and ProTactile

Some members of the Deaf world are DeafBlind, many through Usher syndrome, which pairs congenital deafness with progressive vision loss, and the language adapts to meet them. In tactile ASL, the DeafBlind person rests their hands lightly on the signer's hands and reads the signing by touch: handshape, movement, and location arrive through the fingers, and the grammar of the face is compensated with explicit signs and touch conventions. Beginning around 2007 in Seattle, DeafBlind leaders, including aj granda and Jelica Nuccio, pushed further and founded the ProTactile movement, which is more than a technique: it is a philosophy that touch is a full channel in its own right, not a degraded copy of vision. ProTactile communication happens in contact space, with backchannel taps on the listener's arm or knee meaning yes, I follow, laughter and applause rendered as patterned touch, and environmental information flowing constantly. Its deepest principle is political and should sound familiar by now: DeafBlind people are the experts on DeafBlind communication, and practices are led by them rather than designed for them. If your signing life ever crosses into DeafBlind spaces, you will train specifically for it; for now, know that the language you are studying has a tactile dialect and a civil rights movement inside it.

Key idea: Tactile ASL delivers signing through touch, and the DeafBlind-led ProTactile movement re-engineers communication around contact space, on the principle that touch is a full channel and DeafBlind people lead.

ASL beyond the border

Finish the tour where Lesson 1 began: the world. International Sign, you recall, is a contact pidgin improvised at global Deaf gatherings, the World Federation of the Deaf congresses, the Deaflympics, useful and expressive but nobody's full language. ASL itself, though, has a global footprint. Through missionary schooling, American development programs, and the prestige of Gallaudet, ASL and ASL-influenced varieties took root in dozens of countries. The towering figure is Andrew Foster, the first Black Deaf graduate of Gallaudet, class of 1954, who spent three decades founding more than thirty schools for deaf children across Africa; national sign languages from Nigeria to Kenya carry his fingerprints. Modern practice has learned an ethical caution from this history: local sign languages, like Kenyan Sign Language or Langue des Signes Malienne, are treasures with the same standing as ASL, and exporting ASL as if it were the real sign language repeats, at global scale, the arrogance this course has been teaching you to recognize since Milan. Admire the reach; respect the locals. It is the same lesson at every scale.

Key idea: ASL spread worldwide through schooling and Foster's mission work, but modern ethics insists local sign languages hold equal standing; the real sign language is whichever one the local community owns.

Common misconceptions

  • Variation means some signers are doing it wrong. Regional, generational, and register variation is ordinary language health; the grammar holds while the lexicon breathes.
  • Black ASL is slang or simplified signing. It is a rule-governed variety with a documented history and linguistics, in several respects more conservative of older ASL forms than other varieties.
  • Segregated Black deaf schools were linguistically identical to white ones. Underfunding spared many from oralism's ban on sign, so Black ASL preserved sign-rich instruction traditions that white schools lost.
  • DeafBlind communication is just slower ASL. Tactile ASL and ProTactile re-engineer the channel itself, with contact space, touch backchanneling, and DeafBlind leadership at the center.

The big picture

Return one last time to the emergency room from Module 2, but change the ending. This time, forty minutes after the request, a professional walks in, introduces herself in fluent ASL, positions herself beside the doctor, and for the next hour everything the doctor says appears in the patient's language and everything the patient signs arrives in the doctor's, complete, confidential, and neutral. The fear drains out of the room. That professional stands at the end of a pipeline this course has been quietly describing all along: a language made visible by Stokoe, a community that defended it for a century, laws that DPN helped push into being, and a profession built to carry meaning across the border between two worlds. This final lesson maps that profession and its neighbors, and then does the most important thing a last lesson can do: it hands you your own road forward, concretely, step by step, into the signing world.

What interpreters actually do

ASL-English interpreting is simultaneous, bidirectional meaning transfer. The interpreter listens to spoken English while rendering it in grammatical ASL, face, space, classifiers and all, a few seconds behind, and voices the Deaf person's signing into natural spoken English, switching directions fluidly for hours. Note what that is not: it is not word-for-word transcoding, which you know from Module 1 would produce nonsense, since the languages do not share structure. Interpreters carry meaning, register, and intent, choosing a signed rhetorical question where English used ironic stress, unpacking an English idiom into a spatial metaphor. The cognitive load is severe; research on interpreting consistently ranks it among the most demanding of language tasks, which is why interpreters for long assignments work in teams of two, trading every twenty to thirty minutes, the resting partner monitoring for accuracy. Settings span life: classrooms (the single largest employment setting), hospitals, courtrooms, job sites, therapy, theater, political briefings, and the video relay call centers you met in Module 2, where interpreters handle back-to-back calls all shift. It is skilled, regulated, physically demanding, and in chronic shortage: demand for qualified interpreters outruns supply nearly everywhere in the country.

Key idea: Interpreters transfer meaning, not words, simultaneously and in both directions, working in teams under heavy cognitive load across settings from classrooms to courtrooms to video relay.

The profession's spine: RID, certification, and ethics

The profession organized itself in 1964, the same era as Stokoe's dictionary, when practitioners founded the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, RID, which maintains national certification and the field's ethical code. Certification requires a degree, supervised training through an interpreter education program, and rigorous performance testing; many states add licensure, and specialized credentials exist for legal work. The ethics rest on a Code of Professional Conduct whose pillars you can memorize now: confidentiality (what happens in the appointment stays there); fidelity (render everything faithfully, adding and omitting nothing, including the insults and the jokes); impartiality (the interpreter advises no one, takes no side, and has no opinion on the divorce, the diagnosis, or the deal); and professional boundaries and competence (take only assignments you can serve well). One more figure completes the picture, and it is a proud one: the Certified Deaf Interpreter, a Deaf professional who teams with a hearing interpreter when the situation calls for native fluency, a Deaf child, an immigrant using another nation's sign language, a DeafBlind consumer needing ProTactile, high-stakes court testimony. The hearing interpreter carries English in and out; the CDI carries the meaning the last mile in flawless, culturally tuned ASL. The existence of CDIs teaches the field's deepest lesson: the ceiling of this profession is Deaf expertise itself.

Key idea: RID has certified and governed the field since 1964 under a code of confidentiality, fidelity, impartiality, and boundaries, and Certified Deaf Interpreters put Deaf expertise at the profession's summit.

Who pays, and the ethics of the beginner

Recall the economics from Module 2 and keep them straight forever: under the ADA, the covered entity, hospital, employer, court, business, pays for interpreting; the deaf person never does. Video relay is funded through the FCC's relay fund; captioning obligations ride on broadcasters and venues. Access is infrastructure, not charity. Which brings the ethics home to you, the ASL 1 student, in three rules. First: you are not an interpreter, and you will not be one after ASL 4 either; interpreting requires years of training past fluency, and volunteering to interpret in medical, legal, or financial settings, however kindly meant, can do real harm, the clipboard problem with better intentions. Decline, and help the parties insist on a qualified professional. Second: never let a child interpret for a family, a burden the field calls language brokering, documented as harmful to children and to the accuracy of what gets communicated; adults deserve professionals, and children deserve childhoods. Third: in casual settings where no stakes ride on precision, a chat at a bus stop, a neighbor's question, sign your honest best, say you are a student, and enjoy it; that is not interpreting, that is being a neighbor who signs, which is the whole point of your study.

Key idea: Entities, not deaf people, pay for access; and beginners must refuse to play interpreter in high-stakes settings, never let children broker language, and freely be signing neighbors everywhere else.

Careers around the language

Interpreting is the visible ASL career, but the language borders a dozen professions. Teachers of the deaf work in bilingual-bicultural programs, residential schools, and mainstream support roles; the field needs teachers, especially Deaf ones, and hearing teachers fluent in ASL who respect the bi-bi model. ASL teaching itself is a profession with its own organization and certification, and here etiquette matters: the community rightly expects ASL teaching jobs to center Deaf teachers, so hearing signers usually contribute in support roles rather than competing for them. Speech-language pathology and audiology sit in delicate territory: done with cultural humility, offering families the full menu including ASL, they serve deaf children well; done in the old oralist spirit, they repeat the history you studied. Linguists document sign languages, an active global research frontier. Social workers, counselors, and medical professionals who sign are desperately scarce and deeply valued. Accessibility technology, captioning systems, videophone platforms, DeafSpace-informed design, hires people who understand both worlds. And the performing arts run a signing lane of their own, from Deaf theater to the interpreted concerts you have probably seen going viral. None of these requires you to make ASL your career, of course. The commonest good outcome of ASL 1 is simply a hearing adult who signs: the coworker who can welcome a Deaf hire, the nurse who can say the MRI is safe, the grandparent who signs with a deaf grandchild. Scarce skills do quiet good their whole lives.

Key idea: Careers ring the language, deaf education, ASL teaching centered on Deaf teachers, clinical fields practiced with humility, research, accessibility tech, arts, and the commonest good outcome is simply a hearing professional who signs.

Your road in: the concrete plan

Here is your path, in order. Step one, this month: pair this course's knowledge with video. Step four, always: consume Deaf media, vlogs, ASL poetry and storytelling performances, Deaf theater, the documentary Through Deaf Eyes, Padden and Humphries' books, so the culture keeps teaching you between conversations. And step five, the long game: ASL 2 and beyond, maybe an interpreter education program, maybe just years of Friday socials and a growing circle of Deaf friends, which is, do not forget, the best outcome on the whole list.

The send-off

One page of honesty to close the course, because honesty has been its method from the first lesson. You cannot yet hold a conversation in ASL; no text course could give you that, and this one never pretended otherwise. What you hold instead is the entire frame the conversation will fit into. You know what the language is and what it is not, and you can defeat the three myths in front of any audience. You know its history from a ship in 1816 to a locked campus gate in 1988, and you know why the community guards its language the way nations guard their founding treasures. You know the five parameters, the alphabet, the numbers, the grammar of brows and space and classifiers, the shape of thirty signs, and the manners of the room. Veditz signed in 1913 that as long as there are deaf people on earth, there will be signs. There are, and there will be, and somewhere near you, this week, a few of them are gathered around a table with the light arranged just so, telling stories with the whole visible body. Go find the video lessons tonight. Find the class this season. Find the table when you are ready. You were never going to learn a living language from a book. You were going to learn, from a book, why the language and its people are worth the rest of the journey, and now you know.

Common misconceptions

  • Anyone bilingual can interpret. Interpreting is a trained, certified profession with heavy cognitive demands and an ethical code; fluency is its floor, not its definition.
  • Helping out by interpreting at a clinic is generous. In high-stakes settings, unqualified interpreting causes harm; the generous act is insisting on a qualified professional, whom the entity must pay for.
  • ASL courses qualify hearing people to teach ASL. The community expects ASL teaching to center Deaf teachers; learners support that expectation with their enrollment choices.
  • Attending Deaf events is entitled once you pay for classes. Community spaces are homes, not services; students enter as guests, sign without voicing, and reciprocate what they receive.
